Pompeii was an ancient Roman city near modern Naples in the Campania region of Italy, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area (e.g. at Boscoreale, Stabiae), was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Volcanic ash typically buried inhabitants who did not escape the lethal effects of the earthquake and eruption.

We tacked on this tour last minute and we were fortunate to go! Pompeii cannot and should not be missed! Having a learned guide helped provide a unique perspective about the large area and we were thankful to have Bruno. His excitement, knowledge, and storytelling prowess made for an entertaining and informative walk around the site. I do not think the trip would be the same without the guide and for that, I recommend it. A guidebook might help, but having that Italian humor balances out the heat and sun.
The bus was relatively clean—but know, it’s a bus trip on Italian roads. Even the air conditioning cannot block it all out. The good thing is that you get a bathroom break halfway there and back. The lunch meal was nothing to write home about—and was certainly laughable by Italian standards. Cheap pizza, or chicken and potatoes if you’re gluten free. Ice cream that was more ice and scream than anything else. And they take you first to a somewhat tacky seashell crafting store that I’m sure has cultural significance, but reminded me of a grandmother’s China hutch. Watch out for the hawkers trying to vie for your money and attention.
Take this tour, bring lots of water, wear your sunscreen and sunglasses, and I even recommend a parasol or umbrella for extra shade.

Took this tour with a hotel pick up with Civitatis and on the whole it was very good.

The pick-up was by taxi from the hotel reception which took us to a rallying point to meet the coach which was modern clean, air conditioned and comfortable.

The tour included a tour through Naples with a photo stop. This can for sure be dropped from the itinerary as Naples has no saving graces and is not in the least picturesque or interesting and simply stole valuable touring time when we eventually got to Pompeii.

The comfort stop was well timed and the service station was very good (used the same one on the way back which was great).

The lunch stop was rushed and of average quality. The experience would have been enhanced by skipping the lunch and providing a packed lunch (from the service stop) to be eaten on the bus on the way.

The craft stop at Pompeii was mildly interesting but a serious tourist trap that can also be dropped in favour of more time around Pompeii.

The guides were excellent especially the lady who took us through the detail of Pompeii (though she was rather forceful to the point of rudeness to other visitors not from our group who got in her way)!

Her knowledge was encyclopaedic, and she put the information across in a way that was clear and easy to understand. The issue with the actual Pompeii visit was simply a lack of time.

The day started at 06:30 and ended at the drop off point at 19:00 (there is no taxi return after the coach drop off) and despite this huge time investment, only 2 hours was spent actually at Pompeii.

Drop the detour through Naples, change lunch to a packed lunch from the services and skip the tourist trap to free up valuable time to do Pompeii and the excellent guide justice.

This was by far the highlight of our trip to Rome and had always been on my bucket list. The tour did not disappoint! Our guides (bus and tour) were both excellent, providing valuable and interesting information on the way there, during the tour, and even on the drive home.

The lunch and brief tour of Naples was great, especially the Galleria Umberto, and our visit in Pompeii after lunch was perfect timing as the buildings provided some shade. Such an incredible site! We had time to visit the museum after touring the town, and also time to shop in the cameo store and buy refreshments. The bus ride was long, but our guide made it interesting and even gave us time to nap (the bus was very comfortable!)

The tour was ok. Picked up near Termini Station at 0730 (not from central hotel as advertised), stop about 9am for coffee & bagno I break, then to Napoli for tour of central city historic exterior buildings, then to Pompei for pre-ordered lunch (salad, pizza, drink, desert), then to a studio where they displayed artists making/carving jewelry and an expectation that we would buy something (expensive, unexpected, and not what we signed up for). Then finally, the 2 hour tour of some of the Pompei ruins, and a promise that we would have free time to explore on our own. The free time was just enough time to use a bagno and return to the meeting place for departure back to Rome. We arrived back to Rome around 7pm. So, for a 12 hr trip to Pompei we had 2 hours in Pompei.
WORST and most disturbing, as Covid cases are n the rise, the van driver and the tour guide only wore their masks on their mouths but did not cover their noses ever.

We had a tour that included a 30 min walking tour in Naples, with a local Italian cuisine lunch. Paula was our guide and although very knowledgeable was reluctant to interact and acknowledge the group. She did become better in Pompeii where this was clearly her passion however we were rushed through the museum part very quickly and did not get the time to really look around properly. She did take us through the most important parts of Pompeii town within 2 hours and had a lot of good knowledge about this. The tour guide on the coach was a lot more energetic and friendly.

Amazing experience. Mara is a very engaging guide, very helpful. And our local guide in Naples was amazing as well. Very knowledgeable, spoke in a perfect Spanish, which my non-English fluent mom thanked. Driver was careful and very polite. Also, Mara’s polka dot umbrella saved the day. We would totally recommend this tour to anyone wanting to experience Naples while short in time.

We had an absolute wonderful time in this Day long tour to Napoli and Pompeii. The primary reason was Alessia, our tour leader, who was the most helpful and also the most entertaining tour leader we could have ever hoped for. She enlivened the trip from Rome to Napoli with short quips of history along the way. All throughout the stops she ensured to take care of everyone's doubts and needs patiently. We loved our Pompeii walkabout too, lucky to be paired with Paolo our excellent guide, who gave us a detailed and dramatic stories between every street and house of Pompeii. We would love to visit again and would definitely recommend this to everyone.
To highlight one last thing, on our trip back, Alessia took an initiative to meet each traveller in the bus individually and connect with us. It was an amazing graceful gesture which touched everyone. When talking to us, she recommended us multiple special spots in Rome. We could see the same appreciation in our fellow passengers as well. We cannot thank Alessia enough to going out of her way to help her passengers.

Dear Guest, it's great to read this review so thank you very much for the time spent writing it and sharing it. It's a great contribution to us all and Alessia, too. We know she is one of our best and dedicated tour leaders but such feedback is always useful because it helps us re-focus on what works well and take it as a blueprint for the training of the rest of the staff. We're glad you had a great day with us at Pompeii and we hope to see you soon again. Best regards, the Gray Line I Love Rome Team

We had a hotel pickup booked and although they were 20 minutes past the pickup time the service was excellent and we were at the meeting place on time. We were lucky enough to have Marco as our overall guide and Johnny as our driver. Both exceptionally knowledgeable and pleasant. After about 1 hour of travel we stopped for a break...restrooms and coffee. The Napoli stop was interesting but with the amount of construction in the tour area somewhat difficult. The lunch was wonderful and Pompeii spectacular! We had been previously but they have found and open so many more areas in the last 5 years it was super interesting. We would definitely do again.

We had a wonderful experience at Pompeii. The booking was super easy and meeting point was easy to find. The bus driver was excellent. We met our guide at Pompeii. We were very lucky to have Eliena as our guide. She was an excellent story teller and very engaging with the participants.
There was a marathon in Naples so our tour was cut short and they had to visit a cameo shop which was a bit touristy.
I would have preferred them to take us to visuvius instead. Overall the experience was great because of our guide at Pompeii

First let me say that the Pompeii portion of this tour was excellent. Our tour guide excellently managed a combined English/Spanish tour (more on that) and gave unique and interesting facts. To be fair, seeing Pompeii most definitely would take more time than we had, but that said, with the few hours we did have, we covered a lot of ground. The lunch was great--pizza and salad and dessert and wine before we did the Pompeii tour at a lovely restaurant. Also, the quick coffee stops there and back were, while not needed, a nice stop.

Some surprises were that our tour was actually not just with English speakers, but with Spanish speakers as well. We actually began to wonder as we waited on the bus if we had chosen the wrong tour. I'm sure this is because of cost, but it would have been nice to know that this was a possibility. Again, all the way around, from our bus guide and Pompeii/Naples guide, this was not an issue. Like others we did not enjoy the Naples portion as it seemed unnecessary and we saw about 3 things in an hour. Yes, the things we saw were fine, but I'd much rather have spent that time in Pompeii. Also, upon arrival in Pompeii we were brought into a cameo factory which was very odd and clearly just so people would buy things. This seemed really out of place but perhaps because the company uses this as a meeting place, they are required to feed us all into this place? This was a bit off-putting.
Overall, we really enjoyed the tour. Some minor tweaks would make it 5 star. Definitely go to Pompeii!!

Dear Lucy, thanks a lot for booking the tour to Pompeii with us and for your TripAdvisor contribution. As you see, we care about what people say and take your feedback into account. We're glad you enjoyed your day all in all: we promise to make the possibility of a bilingual approach more clear but, to be honest, it doesn't happen that often after all - as you say, it's a necessity when we only have one bus departing from Rome.
