The vast Murgico plateau facing the Sassi of Matera constitutes the "Regional Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera" since 2007 also declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. It is a large rocky hilly area marked by deep karst fissures called: "Gravine". During this historical-naturalistic walk, the visitor will be able to walk through the narration of the guide the path of man, starting from the Paleolithic settlements, to the entrenched Neolithic villages of "Murgia Timone", from the pastoral communities of the Middle Ages to the rock settlements of the hermit communities Greek-Byzantine. Along a dirt path you proceed along the deep canyon of the ravine. Finally we reach the so-called belvedere to admire the panorama of the Sassi which, illuminated by a myriad of suggestive lights, will offer the visitor the perception of having the starry sky under the feet of an upside-down galaxy .........!

Beautiful historial old village.... unique to Italy
Stopping in Matera was a last minute add to our travels in this area of Italy. it. We were so glad we did. We took a private walking tour which really was worth the money. We learn a lot about the history of this place. At night its beautiful with the soft lighting that has been placed on all these centuries old dwellings. (20,000 people lived here) Make sure you go inside the rock church and the museum that lets you see what life was like living in these hillside dwellings. The amazing part to me as people lived in these primitive dwelling until 1951.

Slurry broken english tour guide are terrible
I was charged 60 dollars per person for a tour for my son and I. The company added two more person to the tour that was dishonest. The lady guide broken and slurry english with Italian accent that I could not understand. In the first five minutes, I decided that three hours of broken english was going yo be a torture. This a recurring issue, in one review here, Francesco is mentioned as the tour guide and the reviewer that there are times that the reviewer cannot understand his english.

    Matera a Must See
Francesco was our tour guide and he was very friendly and knowledgeable about Matera and Sassi. Francesco has a strong Italian accent so at times it was difficult to understand him.

    Very Interesting Tour
We did an evening walking tour in September with our tour guide, Barbara. There were 9 of us in total and the tour lasted approx 2 and a half hours, ending with some samples of local fare and wine at the tourist office. Items were for sale, but no pressure. As for the tour itself, Barbara was very knowledgeable and took us to such locations as The Cattedrale di Matera, a cave museum, Church of Santa Maria De Idris, and many lookouts as well. It was a great introduction to our stay in Matera.

    Discovering the Sassi
This was a great introduction to the history of Matera and life in the Sassi. Antonio was a very friendly, knowledgeable and fun guide. I did the tour in Italian but I’m sure the English version is just as good.

    Sassi Experience!
Our tour was due to start at 5pm and there were only the two of us in the party. However, our guide was 17 minutes late arriving and was accompanied by her 10-yr old nephew who was not at all interested in the tour. Her English was difficult to follow so much so that much detail was lost in translation and we were unable to fully understand her answers to our questions. The tasting at the end of the tour had to be negotiated with the gentleman running the premises as the staff had finished for the day. In comparison with other guided walks taking place in Matera that we passed we thought ours was very poor and relatively expensive. For all the reasons above we could not recommend it to other travellers.

    Terrible
This tour was very disappointing. We could have learnt and seen more in the 2 hours with this guide who gave an incoherent and at times irrelevant commentary. It was made worse and even comical as she had a truculent teenager who proceeded to stamp and kick rocks in protest as she was talking.

Very interesting and a well explained tour of Matera. A warm, friendly, and well educated tour guide.
Barbara was well educated and helped us understand the history of Matera really well. She was very friendly and took the time to get to know us so that we felt comfortable. She personalized the tour with some of our own interests with music. I would recommend Barbara to others.

Our evening walk was cancelled so a guide offered to take us the next morning. The park was great and our guide shared a lot of interesting information throughout the walk. We saw some caves, got up close with a herd of cows, and came to a beautiful view of Matera. Very worthwhile and informative tour! Be warned that you will walk about 3 miles and there are mosquitos in warmer months, so bring bug spray!

Please do not use this Company
Four of us jointly booked a tour to be provided in English starting at 2.30pm with a maximum of 20 people. We paid double the price the company charged for the same tour in Italian at approx £60 a head for a 2.5 hour tour
What we were provided was way short of expectations it started at 2.45 but we were then left by the road side in the park waiting for a guide finally the tour started 30 minutes late
The group size exceeded the maximum with over 25 people on it
We were the only 4 English speaking participants on the tour which the guide provided in English and Italian
Although the guide worked very hard to provide a tour in both languages it was impossible for her to fulfill what we had bought
We paid a premium for a tour in English not one in two languages
We paid for a maximum group size of 20
We paid for a tour that started at 2.30pm not half an hour late
The company despite my complaints say the tour was as advertised and no refund is due what so ever
I have used tour guides all round the world and this is the first occasion I have been treated so appallingly and had to complain
The guide was not the problem it is the TOUR COMPANY- do not touch with a barge pole they do not honour the contract they enter into
I am taking action through my credit card company but this is an outrageous waste of my time and detracts from what should have been a memorable tour. The park it self and Matera are both wonderful fortunately we booked a tour of Matera through a different company who delivered a great tour

Hello, as discussed privately, even if it was a full holiday season our agency provided all the services that were specified in the sale contract between the costumer and the provider (us). Since this review was made public we are forced to share publicly our feedback (that is still valid. ) towards your request. Please note that your part has requested to the platform Viator a refund of the 50% of the total, telling them that this was proposed by us when that is not true, basically a fraud. We gave to the platform that host our services all the data requested and they verified that the refund was in fact not possible due to the fact that all the services included were met by our part. The following responses are the explanation that our front officer gave to you based on the facts that actually happened. Dear Nick, I am truly sorry that the guided tour did not live up to your expactations, and for the delay in sending you an answer. I reached out to my manager referring your issue. He will decide if it is possible to make any refund. First of all, we have to talk to the guide to establish whether she provided you and the group with all the notions that she had. Regarding the size of the group, it was about 25 people (including you and your friends) which is absolutely normal for the festive day. The price you paid refers to the language of the explanation provided by the guide not to the size of the group. I hope you can understand that it is almost impossible to find a small groups (that are not private - the price for a private tour is being set ad hoc by contacting the agency) for any tour on January 1st, being festive. Doing a tour on a festive day necessarily involves a little bit of waiting as we speak about a group tour, but it does not impact the quantity of information you being given by the guide or the itinerary set for the tour. Furthermore, I had contacted other agencies hoping to find a smaller group, but none of them had had a tour in English that day. Finally, our guided tour promoted on Viator includes a licensed English-speaking guide and a round-trip transfer. Both conditions were met by our agency. I will get back to you with a definite answer as soon as I hear from my manager. Thank you for your patience. Jolanta Dear Mr. Nick, our manager made enquiries about the tour on January 1 by talking to the guide as well as some of other participants of the tour. Unfortunately, we will not be able to refund, since our agency provided the guided tour which went as planned. As to personal preferences, or the necessity to wait for the group, as reasons for a refund, they do not fall within our company’s refund policy. If you have any other questions, just reply to this email, I will be happy to help you in any way I can. The length of the tour advertised is approximately 2 hours and a half. Please notice that the duration is always indicated as approximate since it is a group tour, and the overall length of the tour – that includes the guided walk in the park and the trip to the park and back – depends on the walking speed of all the participants of the tour and traffic that minivans may encounter when coming back to pick you up after the tour. - The tour finishes after the sunset (as advertised) in order to offer the opportunity to our tourists to enjoy the marvellous view of the Sassi at sunset, as well as the lights of the Sassi with nightfall. - The Italian group was up to 21 people, plus 4 of you, so the entire group was 25 people which is in compliance with the regulations of the Park. Otherwise, the guide would not have accepted you in the group, and our agency would have necessarily cancelled the tour. The number indicated on Viator (20 people) is not a law, but a common practice, which is not always possible to observe. However, your feedback is precious to us, and we will change the maximum number of participants to 25 (as according to the regulations of the park) in order to avoid this kind of situations in the future. - As for the price you paid for the tour, it refers to the language of the explanation given to you by the guide. If you had not been not interested in the explanation, you could always have booked the tour in Italian which has a lower price due to the language, and not beacause the Italian tour is somehow different. Please notice that each agency is free to set prices independently from other agencies, according to the guides’ fees depend on the language they speak. This means that you will find the tours in English provided by other agencies (also on Viator) that cost less than ours, and those that cost more. You are always free to choose. - I am not really sure what you mean by “we were being added into a far larger party doing a different tour”? Each guide has their own itinerary to follow in the Park, that sometimes intertwine. You followed the same itinerary and received the same information (maybe even more) of the Italian group, so the question is how your tour was different, or inferior, in comparison to the Italian one? As for the number of participants, as explained, is in compliance with the capabilities of the guide (I assure you it was not Mimma’s first tour as she is an experienced guide) as well as the regulations of the park. Again, we are sorry that you felt the necessity to ask for a refund, but your personal preferences regarding small groups and no waiting time cannot be considered as violating the description of the tour. That said, we appreciate you feedback, and will take it into consideration as it will help us to further improve our services. Regards Jolanta Happy to Help Aurora

There were good things about this tour. The sunset was beautiful and the walk fun. But it was a real disappointment for our group. There was an English speaking guide, as promised, but the expert in the area spoke only Italian. He spoke extensively to the English guide but the English speaking guide did not translate. In the end, they were only speaking to each other. We did not go into any caves. The guide said he needed 24 hour advanced notice to enter the caves but we made our reservation weeks ahead of time. The driver who took up to the park texted while he was driving us. I could not believe it. The trip was not at all what was promised. I do not recommend it.
