We will gather in our cozy kitchen before leaving with our local foodie to go shopping at the famous and vibrant food market at the Plaza de Lugo in downtown Coruña. We will see the varieties of sea food and fish just coming from the boats and ready for selling. We will be immersed in the trading environment with locals. A great opportunity to learn about the Galician gastronomic culture. Pencil & Fork will buy all products we will need for the cooking session and we will return to our kitchen just a few minutes walking from the market. Once there we will be ready to roll up our sleeves and start cooking. We will finish eating everything we have prepared with a glass of local wine, red or white, is up to you. Are you in? Menu: -Surprise snacks (depending on the market) -Mussels with Godello -Scallops with ham -Natural cockles -Paella with cockles and squid -Santiago cake (almond cake)

      Spectacular meal and learning experience
David and Ana were excellent hosts…knowledgeable, warm and engaging. Their idea of teaching through food is spot on, I think I learned more about Spain and its culture through this 3 hour excursion than anywhere else. The trip to the market was an adventure of its own. As the food was prepared, everyone contributing and sous cheffing, the stories about Spain started coming to life. The food was so delicious, but the memories will be of how we were welcomed into the Pencil & Fork to share a meal and learn more about a culture.

      Outstanding experience
The experience was outstanding. Our hosts, Ana and David, are super friendly, dedicated and knowledgeable. Together they provided an opportunity to explore both the city and the food, as if you were part of their family. In the comfort of their cafe we cooked and enjoyed a meal of tapas, getting to know both history, content and background for the food we were enjoying. Very much to be recommended!!

Yesterday we had the pleasure of participating in a culinary experience with the wonderful professionals from Pencil & Fork Galicia. After a warm welcome, we were fortunate enough to visit the impressive Plaza de Lugo Market where we could admire the quality products of our land, and then be able to prepare and taste under the direction of our charming hosts, David and Ana.
Mention is also deserved by our fellow co-workers, Amparo, José Luis and Antón, who with the different cultures they contributed (Swiss and Ukrainian), we had the opportunity to check the professionalism of our hosts by including a personal recipe from Amparo and José Luis along the way. and David and Ana's good command of languages to make communication easier and more fluid with Antón.
The result was a pleasant, varied and tasty meal in an atmosphere that made us feel like family.
A unique and very complete experience that we undoubtedly recommend and will repeat as soon as possible.

We had a wonderful time at Pencil & Fork at their Market Tour and Cooking Class. The class is hosted by owners David and Anna who started Pencil & Fork in London before relocating the business to Anna's home of A Crouna. Their mission is to teach and connect cultures through food and the class did just that. It was like we had stepped into their own home to cook a shared meal. We arrived at their establishment, only a short walk from our cruise ship peer, and were greeted with a smile and the offer of a welcome cup of coffee or tea. They operate a small café in the front with their demonstration kitchen in the back.

After we dropped our bags, David took us to the town market just a few minutes away walking where we were amazed at all of the fresh seafood, meat, and produce. David picked out fresh prawns, mussels, cockerels, scallops, and squid along with a local chees and produce needed for our dish. David could have easily accommodated dietary restrictions, and actually reached out in advance of the class to make any needed menu adjustments.

We returned to the café and Anna prepared us each out drink of choice, wine, beer (great local selections), or cocktail; the first was included and any additional drinks were a separate charge. The additional drinks were VERY reasonably priced, especially compared to American prices.

David put each of us to work helping to prepare our shared meal, though if you prefer to just relax you could do that too! We cooked up some shrimp, mussels, cockerels, and scallops as appetizers which all paired nicely with the local cheese. What was neat is that the stock for each of these dishes was then used in our main course, paella! We also prepared a delicious almond cake, Tarta de Santiago. Throughout the day David and Anna told us stories, showed us cooking tips, and created a very welcoming environment. Once our meal was prepared we all sat down family style to share the fruits of our labor.

This was a fantastic value for the price, and a great way to spend the day in the city when in port for a cruise. There was time before and after the class to wonder around the town.

David and Anna really fulfilled their mission to teach their culture through food!

Ana and David welcomed myself and the other guys I shared that experience with, very warmly and in the kindest way possible.
Lovely “get to know a bit of each other” chat with everyone to begin with plus coffee, then walk to local food market with David who described us the gorgeous fantastic products Galicia has to offer to its visitors, then back to the restaurant and cooking experience with very interesting chat with the owners who told us the history behind the dishes, and obviously, the food and wine tasting was the icing on the cake!
    I highly recommend the experience!

Si te gusta la cultura y la comida de los sitios que vas a visitar la experiencia que Ana y David te van a ofrecer es un MUST. :-)

Gradevolissima esperienza resa tale dalla gentilezza e competenza di Ana e David.

We recently joined Anna and David for a wonderful experience, where we had a fascinating tour of the local market. David was exceptionally knowledgeable about all the different products sold there and he bought some wonderful fresh produce to cook later. On our return to their charming bistro, we spend the next few hours, learning how to cook and tasting all this wonderful food. My friend and myself even baked the Tarte de Santiago !

Thank you Anna and David for a wonderful experience and your charming hospitality. It will be something we will be talking about for months.

I can honestly fully recommend this tour, and you will NOT be disappointed is spending time with these exceptional hosts

Exceptional experience. Visit to the Point of Sale supervised by David, was fantastic. Then we went back to the kitchen workshop and cooked all our purchases. We especially tasted this little seafood “Percebe” very $$$ and that Galicians eat at Christmas only, tapas, mussels, everything was remarkably delicious.
I strongly suggest this unique experience. Thank you David and Ana.

The whole experience was wonderful and one of the highlights of our two weeks in Galicia. We have had other cooking experiences while traveling and this one ranks at the top of our list. Ana and David immediately made us feel at home when we arrived at the Pencil and Fork with a nice coffee and warm introduction. It was fascinating to hear their entrepreneurial journey that landed them in A Coruna running this business.

My favorite part was the trip to the market with David to buy the provisions for our meal. The three story market was a cornucopia of fresh seafood, meats, vegetables, fruits and flowers. David deftly navigated the three story complex while highlighting some of unique cuisine available such as the Percebes. With our shopping completed we returned to the Pencil & Fork to prepare the meal. While David did the heavy lifting my wife and I were included in the preparation and witness to the entire cooking process. David welcomed our many questions and enthusiastically provided answers. Ana also gave us a fascinating history of a local heroine, Maria Pita.

Every dish was wonderful and we were replete at the end of our class. The pace of the cooking session was ideal and we did not feel rushed, or like we were overstaying our welcome. We did, however, relish the chance to walk along the nearby beachfront to complete our day in A Coruna. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area and getting a chance to meet Ana and David.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day with the dynamic husband and wife team, David and Anna.
From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with huge smiles and offered cafe con leche, my favourite.
The conversation was easy, the atmosphere was relaxed and the food was superb. I never knew cooking seafood could be so simple. We will be cooking more seafood when we get home for sure.
The walk through the local market was a hit, the food was fresh and still moving lol. David was sure to not let us buy over priced cheese, thanks David.
We definitely recommend this to anyone wanting an Authentic local Spanish experience.
Thank-you David and Anna, you are onto something great and we both wish you loads of luck with your new adventure in A Coruña.

I had the most amazing and unforgettable time cooking with David and getting to know his wife Ana on my trip to A Coruña. The workshop feels like you're cooking with family because of all the stories they share and David's patient and kind style of teaching. The food was incredible and very simple to prepare, but the real treasure was being able to enjoy it all in the end with a glass of wine and great conversation. This was truly a unique experience and I highly recommend this workshop to anyone considering it!

We are travelling as a family with a baby and spend some wonderful hours with David and Ana. It was very nice to go to the newly remodeled market of La Coruna and see all the wonders the sea has to offer here. In the other Sections it was great to have the opportunity to ask the questions we have been curious about. Cooking together was also a very good experience, with the Cafe/kitchen of Pencil&Fork offering a cosy and protected space especially with the children. Both Ana and David were very nice with them. It was great to use and try some of the seafood we were always a little scared to try Out. We prepared Mejilliones,Zamburiñas, a Seafood Paella and Santiagos Cake. So now, we can have alot more seafood during our remaining stay in Spain. Muchas gracias Ana & David!

I’m in A Coruna for two days and felt this would be a great way to meet some locals, meet travelers from other places, learn about the area and just enjoy. It was a total pleasure to experience David and Anna’s warm hospitality and cooking lesson. Irish, German and me the American made a lovely group. Much fun.
