About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Trail6694040 contributionsRecommended, fun and deliciousMy husband and I thoroughly recommend this course. Really enjoyed learning how to make pintxos, drinking a range of wines and listening to stories about the history and culture of Bilbao. Really fun, lots of information and chat. Mikel really knows his stuff and is very enthusiastic. Would do another course here.Written 8 December 2024
- TouristRR0 contributionsGreat food & wine experienceWe had a great experience during the tour. Marina was our guide. She was very knowledgeable about local history & culture. All the places that we visited were interesting and the food & wine were great! Thank youWritten 26 November 2024
- H8823CZrichardh0 contributionsOutstanding Day Trip to Rioja wineriesFour of us went on an amazing day trip from Vitoria-Gastiez to Rioja, visiting 2 wineries and lunch in the medieval town of La Guardia. The wine tasting were excellent, the lunch was tasty, and the scenery was spectacular. But the highlight of our trip was our host Marina. I gave been on many tours; she was one of the best if not the best host/tour guide we have ever had. Because of Marina the trip went from very nice to spectacular. Highly recommend!!Written 13 November 2024
- Grahamarb0 contributionsThe BestWe cannot say enough good things about the tour we took with Irene of Northern Spain Gastronomy. We had a tour of Rioja. She planned it meticulously: large producers, medium producers, small producers. All very, very high quality. The restaurants she took us to were all excellent. Her knowledge of the area is unsurpassed. You could not possibly have a better tour of Rioja than the one we had with Irene.Written 1 November 2024
- sloadvisor0 contributionsFast Paced, Friendly and Fun!Exceptional experience! Mariana was energetic and fun, making drink recommendations based on our preferences, and providing suggestions for additional places to eat and drink. We made 4 stops, each with unique Pintxos and beverages. We ate chorizo, octopus, lamb, crab and more! It was perfect, fast paced, and worth the price. Ask for Mariana, you’ll leave full na happy! 😃Written 30 October 2024
- beatrizrZ6978LZ0 contributionsA great Basque experienceChef Mikel's impressive culinary background and agreeable conversation made the class informative, valuable, and exciting—not to mention the feast we prepared and enjoyed! I took his pintxos, paella, and immersive courses. The newcomer and the expert found something interesting in all three of them. His conversation about the beautiful Basque Country involved not only Basque cuisine but also traditions and history, and he invited similar exciting discussions with international attendees. Good food, good people, and an enjoyable afternoon where you get to know people with similar desires to learn and share. Thank you Chef MikelWritten 26 October 2024
- Lena Y0 contributionsFun and deliciousMarina was an excellent guide! She was knowledgeable, personable, and high energy. She was happy to answer our many questions about food, culture, and Bilbao history. She’s the perfect guide. The “walking” part of the tour is quite easy and suitable for anyone. The food and drink were excellent! We tried a range of food. I’m not a heavy drinker and didn’t feel pressured to keep up. We had a lovely time! Highly recommend.Written 24 October 2024
- snpromisel0 contributionsA wonderful day of views, wine, food and friends. We had the most amazing day with Irene Lopez Martinez! Irene arranged the most comfortable bus for the eight of us to tour the Rioja Wine area. She captivated us immediately with her knowledge and experience of the Vineyards and Terroir of Rioja. We were able to enjoy the wines of two very different Wineries and a fantastic country meal that warmed our hearts. The tour was a highlight of our Northern Spain trip and I highly recommend Northern Spain Gastronomy and Irene for a truly memorable experience.Written 23 October 2024
- TootsieRoll2140 contributionsA taste of Bilboa - Five StarsWhat fun we had on our food tour with the incomparable Irene (E-!re!-ne), a trained chef, sommelier, and outgoing, knowledgeable guide. Ours was a small group of just five guests, but we bonded immediately. We stopped at five different spots and had beautifully paired pintxos and local wines at each place. We went to the Wine Bar Irene runs with her partner (Gastonomia Bilbao) the next day for lunch and had one of the most memorable meals. Can't recommend highly enough.Written 20 October 2024

- 232jen0 contributionsThe best tour and guide ever. Will definitely check out their other tours the next time we visitIrene is absolutely the best guide ever. She's a trained sommelier and chef. She understood what we wanted from the get go and brought us to exceptional wineries. She's extremely energetic and knowledgeable about wines & food, and kept us entertained with interesting stories and information throughout the hour and a half drive from Bilbao to Rioja. She also owns Gastronomia Bilbao, which is a bar and cooking school. Next time, we will stay longer so that we can take a few of her cooking classes. It should be great fun.Written 28 September 2024
- Freedom448771284300 contributionsSan Sebastián - Best Tour EverMarina was a terrific guide providing us with an amazing Basque wine tour and a pintxos bar experience in San Sebastián that we will never forget. Along the way, she schooled us in all things Basque: geography, culture, language and, of course, history. This tour was everything that we could have hoped for.Written 19 September 2024

This is the perfect tour for any beginner wine drinker, learning about the process, and getting to see two very large production facilities in full action. The buildings which they create such wine are masterpieces, and the people that work at each winery are incredibly passionate. The tours themselves at the wineries are fairly long, and it does include a lot of walking (less tasting). Plan accordingly. The walk through Laguardia is absolutely stunning, a must do! Plan to have light Pintxos for lunch. I recommend bringing a water bottle with you for each stop, and also a layer since you'll be going in/out of the cool cellar area at the wineries. Note: if you are a novice, this may not be the tour for you. While this tour group does focus on small groups (there were 5 of us); you are joined by large groups at the actual wineries. So it is not intimate tastings. In addition, the tours are at very large facilities where you don't meet the wine maker / owner. Again the staff are loyalist, (both had been there 18 years), however you should know that this is not a small, intimate, get to know the wine maker tour. Sara our transportation guide was amazing! Her spirit and joy lit up a room, and she had incredible knowledge about the industry. I absolutely recommend this tour with Irene or Sara if you are looking to learn and experience large wine making facilities, with great Rioja wine, and beautifully designed structures.

Dear Stephanie,
Thank you so much for having taken the time to share this review for us. We are really happy that you enjoyed the tour in the Rioja wine region, Laguardia and the company of our guide Sara!
I just want to clarify, for you and others reading this exchange, the 'Rioja Wine & Architecture Tour’ is specifically that and as such its takes in the world-class, stunning architectural marvels that adorn Rioja and its wines. Of course, smaller boutique wineries which we also specialise in on other tours do not set out to compete with the larger producers who are able to invest in stunning architectural structures.
Furthermore, since these wineries, of which there are very few, are so architecturally important for Rioja and the region (designed by some of the worlds leading architects, Frank Gehry, Santiago Calatrava and others) they experience very high demand and are designed to accommodate larger groups and tours (and this is something that we cannot control).
We very much hope we can welcome you back on one of our smaller boutique tours where you get to experience a winery in a totally different and more personal way so you get a whole view of the Rioja wine region. They are a complete contrast to the aptly labelled ‘Rioja Wine & Architecture’ tour but as you suggest, may suit someone more interested in smaller boutique wineries than the architectural marvels of Rioja.
Thank you so much again and we wish you the best of travels around northern Spain!

Joined a tour with Irene and oh man, this has to be the best experience out of my entire Spain trip!! Irene was fun, attentive and knowledgeable in the types of wines and Basque country. I never knew wineries can be designed so creatively until I joined this tour!
The pinxtos at a bar in La Guardia just blew me away! Too good, just too good! I'll never mix up a tapa from a pinxto ever!!
Strongly strongly recommend to join a tour with NSG, you will not regret it. In fact my friend and I are planning a return trip, with more days in the Basque Country!

Both wineries were gorgeous, and the modern esthetic stood out (in a good way) in the vast traditional landscape. I thought the first winery was amazing, but then the second one in Laguardia felt like I was visiting some fancy celebrity spa resort. The architecture was truly wild. I’m not much of a wine person (my friend is), but the guides were great and gave just enough stories and what to look out for during the tasting (in a down to earth way) that I think I like wine now!
Wineries aside, our tour guide Marina was awesome, it felt like I was visiting a friend and she was showing me around her city - lots of fun facts, stories, some local gossip, lots of laughter. I’ve been on a few wine tours in the US, but this experience as a whole was on another level, would highly recommend and worth the price tag.

This is a semi private tour in a small group of up to 6 people, with 2 wine tastings at wonderful wineries in stunning La Rioja region followed up by the visit of gorgeous small town of Laguardia, a hidden gem, where we had a tasty pintxos lunch. Absolutely recommendable, don’t hesitate to enjoy this wonderful experience. Local guide Sara was just amazing, very knowledgeable, fluent in English and a very nice and friendly host.

My wife and I booked this tour and weren't sure what to expect and it turned out amazing. We had Marina as our tour guide and she was incredible. The guide group was 6 people (including us), you get picked up in Bilbao just outside the Guggenheim in a van. When you arrive at the wineries you wait to join a larger tour group for the winery operated tour. Marina gave us plenty time between the visits to explore the stores and buy souvenirs and a bottle for later. The best part is this is about an hour drive from Bilbao and if you want to ensure you can drink and not worry about driving this is a great option. The lunch in Laguardia turns out to be more of a lunch/dinner around 5pm local depending if youve gotten used to the local late eating but the food and town were great additions after the walking in the wineries facilities.

I highly recommend this wonderful full-day tour of the Rioja Wine Region. Our tour guide (Irene) was very friendly and knowledgeable and truly enhanced the experience. She shared her knowledge of the Rioja wine region and we learned so much about the Basque region history and culture. The tour included visits to two cool wineries with interesting modern architecture with plenty of wine to taste! We loved the tour of Laguardia and thoroughly enjoyed the terrific lunch at a great restaurant in Laguardia. The Rioja wine region scenery is absolutely beautiful and it was pleasure visiting and exploring this area with Irene as our tour guide!

The whole day was lovely - I would highly recommend! Our guide, Sara, was very knowledgeable and super friendly. A lovely lady. We visited some amazing wineries and the tastings were delicious. I was so excited to visit the Ysios winery - the views were incredible!! The itinerary is varied and I could not find this combination of wineries on any other tour. It was well worth the money - we had a great day which was a highlight of our holiday 😊 Shelley

This was an excellent wine tour. Irene is very knowledgeable about the food & wine of the region and her passion for it comes through. She is a thoughtful and engaging host, anticipating our needs and giving us useful hints and tips. As others have said I recommend booking this early in your trip to make the most of the advice.

We had a wonderful day with our guide Jon touring the Rioja region. Visited vineyards, enjoyed tastings, and learned about the history and culture of the region.
Jon drove us through the port / extended city area of Bilbao on the return trip and again we had a great conversation about the development of the city over the past 20 years.
Thank you Jon and would highly recommend this trip.
