About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 589ilanag0 contributionsGreat day on the Wild Atlantic Way!Henry was a very kind, responsive guide beginning when we were corresponding with him before the tour. He clearly has good working relationships with the people who work at the sites along his route, including the Glenveagh visitor center and the Croithli distillery. He was also very good about tailoring the tour to our needs and interests. The castle and distillery were highlights as were the views along the way.Written 24 January 2025
- TammyL9820 contributionsA Very Special Tour Guide ExperienceIreland is a magical land and never disappoints! Henry made it all that more special. My friends made all the plans with Henry prior to our arrival so I really wasn't sure what to expect. Although not our first trip to Ireland it was the first time we used a Tour Guide which made for such a wonderful visit. Henry thought of everything so we could just focus on having a good time and enjoying all the sights, cities and quaint towns. He is extremely knowledgeable and very witty so lots of laughter as we traveled about. I look forward to spending time with Henry again on our next trip to Ireland.Written 13 November 2024
- H9254VQannec0 contributionsBeautiful day in DonegalOur family had a wonderful day of touring Donegal with Henry. After being picked up at our hotel, the seven of us were taken on a beautiful adventure, including tracking down our grandparents house Henry is knowledgeable, excellent driver. and was able to time every stop for optimal enjoyment. Within minutes of getting into his beautiful car he knew all seven of our names and figured out the relationships. He was able to draw everyone in to the experience. We could not recommend spending a day with Henry any higher. He is simply the best. Thank you Henry for a fabulous day that we will never forget.Written 1 November 2024
- jonathansA7670BZ0 contributions6 days touring Ireland with the Donegal TourguideHenry is a gem. Spent 6 days touring with Henry in Counties Donegal, Mayo, And Galway plus a day in Northern Ireland. Henry is knowledgeable, professional, considerate, and funny. Highly recommended.Written 27 October 2024
- Expedition594710 contributionsAwesome guide in Ireland! We took an amazing 7 day private tour with Donegal Tour guide. Henry was professional with our planning and provided many great suggestions to our itinerary. We all had been to Ireland so we focused our tour on Northern Ireland and the northern part of the republic, Henry was so flexible and courteous when we changed plans on the ground and almost immediately we felt he was part of our group. If you want a driver and guide our group would recommend no one else! Thank you Henry for an unforgettable experienceWritten 26 October 2024
- evanhX595KK0 contributionsOnce In A Lifetime Tour of Ireland! From the first pickup on Day 1, to the farewell on Day 9, our private tour with Donegal Tour Guide was just fantastic! It would not have been close to as magical as it was having Henry's guidance during our cross-country adventure. Myself, my mom, my partner, and my partner's mom went on a week long trip with Henry from Dublin, to the Rings of Kerry and Dingle, up to Galway, Donegal, Derry, Belfast, and back to Dublin, the majority of which we planned ourselves prior to arriving in Ireland. Before meeting Henry, we asked for feedback from him on our itinerary, which he was always more than happy with giving feedback and helping us finalize various sites, reservations, tours in the weeks leading up to arriving in Ireland. There was a LOT we packed into our trip, and Henry did an excellent job of both honoring our desired sites to see as well as offering his unmatched insight into getting the most "bang for our buck". If he knew of a place that really was not worth visiting after all, he always had an even better option. Henry is friendly, informative, professional, witty, charming, flexible, punctual, reliable, and fun. During our longer day drives, we all felt just as comfortable in conversation with Henry, as well as just quietly enjoying the scenery until our next stop. Henry gave us fantastic suggestions during our short stays in each city, like which pubs and restaurants are best and to be sure to visit any photo-worthy landmarks. He is also a wellspring of fun trivia and knowledge facts about the Irish peoples, locations, history, arts, language, and culture. Essentially our trip was in order to connect with our Irish ancestry, to build our son-mother relationships, and to have an unforgettable experience together. All three happened, and they were made easy with Henry's company. He was even in on the surprise proposal my partner planned while visiting the Slieve League Cliffs!! SO if you are thinking of self-driving across Ireland, doing one of the larger tour groups, or having a private chauffeured experience like what Henry offers, 1000% go with Henry at Donegal Tour Guide!!Written 8 October 2024

We saw so many beautiful sites and Henry adjusted the schedule based on the weather so we were able to make the most of the sunshine. Thanks for a great trip, Henry! - MaryeDonnellan630 contributionsA great 2 days with Henry! This August we took 2 tours with Henry as our guide. Henry is warm, fun and so easy to be with. He is very knowledgeable not just about Donegal’s history but also the culture and traditions that make Donegal such unique part of Ireland. We so enjoyed our 2 days with Henry and high recommend making him part of your Donegal vacation- having Henry show you the stunning Donegal landscapes is the best way to see Northwestern Ireland.Written 20 August 2024

- fergus10270 contributionsTwo wonderful days in Donegal with Henry DoohanOur family, grandparents, parents and 2 teenagers, spent two wonderful days touring Donegal with Henry. He did a fantastic job of introducing us to his very beautiful part of Ireland. I pretty much left the planning to Henry and he did a great job of combining the amazing scenic areas with history. I particularly appreciated his giving us the Irish names for places. Henry also has a great sense of humor, which is very important to our family! we thoroughly enjoyed our time and will definitely be back!Written 20 July 2024
- anneoO1975HI0 contributionsBest Day Ever!Of the twelve days of our adventures in Ireland, the day spent on tour with Henry of Donegal Tours was absolutely the most memorable! We visited great sites and learned so much thanks to his knowledge and expertise. His kindness and consideration regarding our wishes to learn about our family heritage places was remarkable. On top of that he has a great sense of humor and the coach was extremely comfortable!Written 6 July 2024

- laurasM2320BL0 contributionsThe perfect guide to Donegal's undervisited natural beauty! It is no exaggeration to say that our tour of Donegal with Henry included moments that made it worth the trip to Ireland by themselves. Henry went well beyond the call of duty to cater to our interests, skillfully maximized our time by trying to fit as many meaningful stops in as possible, and customized the tour on-the-fly, getting us to some delightfully remote places in County Donegal. One example probably tells you all you need to know. My wife has been dreaming of a trip to Donegal for roughly 30 years. Her favorite traditional Celtic band takes its name from Loch Altan in County Donegal. As we talked with Henry and he realized how big a fan she was, he slyly pulled over on the side of the road during our tour, and we realized we suddenly had a perfect view of Loch Altan at a distance. And then Henry started playing my wife's favorite Altan song from the van's speakers. It was probably the most magical moment of our two weeks in Ireland. I can't imagine a better guide to this underrated and undervisited corner of Ireland. Thank you, Henry, for helping make our dreams come true in style and for being so friendly and attentive to us.Written 23 May 2024
- JoeRSav0 contributionsAn Amazing TripHenry was our tour guide and driver for 12 days at the end of April and beginning of May. Picking 4 of us up in Dublin, he drove us to Northern Ireland where we stayed for 4 days. Following that, we went back to the Republic, spending 3 or 4 days in Donegal and Mayo, ending back in Dublin. Henry had been our guide for a day on a previous trip and we were so very fortunate to have him again. At each place, he gave us options for tours and places to visit, providing costs, time, and descriptions of each. With his knowledge of the areas and contacts with local people at various attractions, we saw and experienced many things that we would have missed had we been traveling on our own. For example, he took us to a sheep farm where we saw not just a sheep herding demo, but got to talk extensively with the 4th generation owner of the farm and learn about their impressive operations. He took us to a distillery that was clearly off the beaten path where the guide was wonderfully knowledgeable and entertaining. These are but two examples of the many tours he arranged for us. He was sensitive to scheduling breaks appropriately and identifying options for food as needed, and was equally sensitive to some health needs of our group. His charming and engaging personality, combined with an extensive knowledge of history and of current local information and people made an absolutely wonderful tour!! If you are considering a tour guide and can fit into his schedule, you will be fortunate, indeed. He gave us a time we will never forget!!Written 16 May 2024

We spent about 2-1/2 days with Henry just last month touring Donegal and the Inishowen Peninsula. We loved every minute of our time with him. Because of our limited time there, he personalized an itinerary for us which was fantastic. He was so personable, knowledgeable, flexible, and his transport vehicle was incredibly comfortable and immaculately maintained. We are looking forward to returning to the Inishowen Peninsula. I would not go back to Ireland without spending time there!

Henry is a godsend to people like us who don't like to drive on holidays. With public transport almost non-existent on Inishowen, his service is much appreciated. We had a lovely day with him. Would recommend to anybody who prefer scenery to the dashboard on their holidays.

Without a doubt, my day out touring with Henry was the highlight of my trip to Ireland. I traveled to Donegal with a mission in mind – to spend a day experiencing the area around Lough Swilly and Inch Island as my mom’s family may have done before coming to America. Several decades earlier, I had helped my mom locate her last few very elderly relatives who stayed and it meant the world to her. With that memory, I wanted to return to gain a deeper context for the stories of my mom’s family.
Henry was amazing! He very thoughtfully considered my objective and came up with a plan that took us up to Grianana Aileach first for the incredible vista across Lough Swilly to Lough Foyle and from Inch Island across to Derry – where my mom’s cousins were from. The view was nothing short of majestic, and its impact will stay with me for a very long time. Then on to Inch itself for a drive through while I captured video of life as it is today on the island.
Later in our day when Henry mentioned he had worked on documentaries, I wasn’t surprised. His talent and expertise set the stage for me to experience a personal and very meaningful documentary of my family’s history in Donegal.
Henry had great suggestions to follow after we headed north. I loved the town of Buncrana and learned quite a bit at the Doagh famine village. The Magic Road on the way to Malin Head was unique, and of course the scenery was grand at Fort Dunree, at the Star Wars movie site, and at Malin Head. Henry was very patient (hello – husbands out there!) as I took my time absorbing and capturing the incredible beauty at each stop.
Plus, it was just a lot of fun to ride with Henry and catch up on the issues of the day in contemporary Ireland. My most recent trip had been in 2018, so I have a small perspective on how it has changed over the decades and I’m always interested in being properly informed by the people who are living it day to day.
If you make the effort to visit Donegal, you would be remiss in not relying on Henry’s expertise to thoroughly enjoy Donegal!

Henry Doohan is the consummate tour guide. Friendly, informative, funny, thoughtful. Think of him as the best “friend of a friend” imaginable. Sharing his van for a day was delightful from start to finish. We selected the Inishowen Peninsula Tour, Option C and visited Grianán of Aileach, Fort Dunree, Mamore Gap, Malin Head and Doane Famine Village. With Henry as our guide we learned the context of what we saw and experienced. The Doane Famine Village was a particular delight as it included a “live” wake, bringing out many Irish celebrating and remembering this custom with customary poitín, served in a small plastic glass. Hoo-ha! Very refreshing to visit a living demonstration village that is family-run and deliberately so. Just driving through Ireland’s countryside was worth every minute. As we departed Derry by train, we visited with an Irish gentleman across the aisle and spoke of our tour through the Inishowen Peninsula. His eyebrows were raised in surprise and delight as he remarked that few tourists visit that area. Exactly!

Seeing the north of Ireland through Henry’s eyes was amazing. We knew very little about this magical place and he took us to see the most wonderful things - like Malin Head and the Dough Famine Village. He also escorted us to other parts of the west and north of Ireland, giving us a friendly and delightful trip. We are all cooks as well and we were consistently taken to places where we had memorable, scrumptious meals. I highly recommend his services!

My husband and I were touring Ireland via a cruise ship and 3 ports were cancelled due to inclement weather and substituted with other cites, the last one was Greencastle. I was scrambling to find something to do just like all the other passengers and we were so grateful to have found Henry. Henry picked us up at the port and we immediately started our wonderful day sightseeing some breathtaking views of North Ireland. Henry is such a delight, he is very knowledgeable, very compassionate and a great sense of knowing just what the tourist want to see and do. I highly recommend any of the tours that Henry has, you will not be disappointed.
