Our tour was amazing. The Red Witch was an excellent guide, who was really fun and eager to involve the audience. She also warned us in advance about a particularly claustrophobic experience near the end, which my wife and I appreciated, especially the offer to avoid that section.

Also, I would now like the menacing shadow with glowing red eyes that appears at the foot of our bed some time after 3pm to be removed, it is annoying the cat.

Thanks for a great tour!

Booked this tour last minute as Edinburgh Festival was on and wanted to escape the crowds for a little bit. Major Weir was so funny, stayed in character the whole time even barking at other passers by. The stories he told were chilling and definitely put a shiver down your spine as the sunset. I think it was very reasonably priced and a brilliant way to spend the early evening. Thank you Major Weir!

Our tour guide was “John - The Scientist” and he did an amazing job, talking about (not very cheerful) historical events that happened centuries ago while explaining the geographical aspect of Edinburgh as well.
The tour was filled with interesting facts, laughter and humour with frightening stories about this city.

I generally enjoyed this tour and can happily recommend it to everyone who likes ghost stories and history.

Excellent character-play by our tour guide as well! :)

This tour is extremely misleading at best. You basically go in a cave basement for 10 minutes with props scattered around while the guide tells you a couple stories that don’t seem to have historical backing (which they might but our guide didn’t really explain the spaces well). There are no tunnels (Theres a hallway connecting the three small rooms), these are not catacombs, and this isn’t a city under the city. The majority of the tour takes place above ground. I credit good reviews to engaging and fun tour guides which on top of a disappointing tour, we did not get. We ran smack into the tour ahead of us going underground and had to all walk back out to wait for them to leave. Not a huge deal and not his fault but people were annoyed (mostly because they figured out we were only going into a small space) He had good punchlines but they weren’t delivered right so a lot of it fell flat and his stories seemed to be missing details. I felt like he didn’t want to be there but maybe he was just having an off night or he’s new. Honestly, even if I had a great guide I don’t think I would recommend this tour. I took several tours in Edinburgh and this was truly a waste of money. I took a cheaper tour (Harry Potter, Haggis & Horrible histories) that was longer and SO MUCH more informative. He also takes you through the graveyard but he had a lot more stories and doesn’t rely on a character as a gimmick. Don’t waste your money on this.

We were looking forward to exploring the underground tunnels and vaults as the title of the tour would suggest….. we went down some stairs and looked at 3 ‘staged’ rooms joined by 1 tunnel for approximately 10 minutes of the 75 minute tour, the rest of the tour was spent walking around the city which is beautiful however this isn’t what we paid for.
Falsely advertised, don’t waste your money

After reading so many good reviews, we couldn’t wait to experience this ghost tour. How wrong we were! We arrived just after (a few minutes, quite literally) our start time due to unforeseen traffic delays caused by road closures and poor weather. There was nobody at the booth so we phoned the number on the booth, it didn’t even ring through and our call was disconnected. We approached another, much friendlier tour guide who was working for a different ghost tour (an orange tour company which we desperately wished we’d booked with about 5 minutes after we finally found our tour guide) who said she hadn’t seen our tour but pointed us in the direction of a few groups it might be since they all start in the same square on the Royal Mile. Brilliant, we found our tour guide. When the group left for their next destination, I told our tour guide, Jessie King, why we were late, apologised profusely and showed her our tickets. She seemed annoyed by my presence, telling me I wasn’t allowed to join late (say good bye to the £28 I guess?). Eventually, after much eye rolling from her and honestly, what felt like an attempt at ignoring me as best she could, she said we could join. We stopped off at a graveyard and heard three different stories then we were shown to an underground section in a side street. At both destinations, the tour guide swore multiple times, which I really couldn’t care less about, but since this tour was advertised as family friendly, and there were more than a handful of under 10s there, it seemed inappropriate of her to be casually dropping swear words like that. The retelling of the stories was boring, seemed completely unrehearsed, there was no enthusiasm or interest, and it was spoilt by a lack of detail, knowledge or passion which was a huge shame. When we were led to the underground area where our tour concluded, it felt eerie at first but we were soon met with plastic amputated limbs and severed heads, skeletons and dolls, which detracted from the real life horror stories experienced by the poorest of residents during 18-19th century Edinburgh and didn’t really serve any purpose besides trying to create a spooky atmosphere, which also fell as flat as the storytelling. Overall, I would not recommend this to anyone, nor would I waste my money on this again, even if I was with another, more amiable and professional tour guide. Avoid and spend your money elsewhere!

An excellent little tour of this corner of Edinburgh. I was really surprised that the famous vaults were hidden behind a regular door on the high street! Our guide was John the Scientist, who did a brilliant job entertaining us and giving the odd fright or two. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to see the most famous spooky sites of the city.

This was a disappointment for us. Our guide seemed more interested in being funny and playing his part than actually telling the stories. Also, telling stories while walking in the busy streets of Edinburgh means that only half the group can hear what you’re saying.
I wish this would have been more serious and informative, and not just another tourist trap. By the time we came to the actual underground part of the tour (which was a short session at the end of the walk) we were already fed up and bored.

Absolutely brilliant, our guide Lafayette was hilarious and really made the tour. 10/10 would recommend for someone interested in the history and dark past of Edinburgh City. The guide was also brilliant with two young children who were part of our group so this was great for all ages!
