    What to Expect
Want to hear about William Shakespeare's London life, and see little-known or hidden plaques, memorials, busts and statues?

Then you MUST come on this fascinating two hour Shakespeare walking Tour, by researcher, and former professional actor,

    Declan McHugh.
    • We meet on Fridays at 11am outside the only exit at Blackfriars underground station (Circle and District lines).
    •  Declan immediately reveals a Shakespeare statue most people miss.
    • Next, the location of the original Blackfriars Theatre, and why you had to be rich to attend; plus how rich Shakespeare himself became.
    • The fragment remaining of the Blackfriars Monastery.
    • A lovely, hidden location connecting Shakespeare and King James.
    • The site of a Shakespeare house in London, and its fate. The play likely written here.
    • Next, a church with a hidden sculpture of Shakespeare praying, and a very important document. The Researcher who makes Americans proud. Richard 111 and its connections to the area.
    • An extraordinary hidden totem pole made from a famous William Shakespeare speech. You would NEVER find this by yourself! Declan gives the entire speech.
    • Next, The College of Arms and the Shakespeare family's coat of arms. Why it came two months too late. Plus Ben Jonson's joke at Shakespeare's expense.
    • On to a plaque revealing Shakespeare's generosity, and the background to Shakespeare's two daughters and their very different fortunes.
    • To St Pauls and a breathtaking revelation about it. Shakespeare's best ever seller, plus his sonnets and a reasonable interpretation of his sexuality. Declan's favourite words by anyone EVER (clue: it's only 4 words and they are by William Shakespeare).
    • Next a section on Shakespeare's amazing vocabulary, and why it wasn't enough.
    • The location of a pub he drank in and who else drank there. Plus a section on his religion and why he was lonely and reclusive.
    • Up next, a bust of the man himself and the men who honoured him; which plays we would lack without them..
    • The location of Shakespeare's second house, and how Shakespeare made a marriage then regretted it.
    • Finally, at a church he knew, the two best known actors of his age, and the sad case of his brother Edmund.
    • Declan finishes with another complete and hauntingly beautiful speech from Shakespeare's last play .
    • Declan then walks to Barbican underground station if you want to join the underground system.
    • By the end of this magical tour you will know William Shakespeare, and his London, infinitely better!

Declan, our guide, was excellent. We had a terrific time following him around little alleys and small corners of the City as he showed us monuments and places connected to Shakespeare while answering to all the questions we had. It was a highly informative tour and we found out

Declan was a knowledgable and entertaining guide. His tour visited a number of historical sites, and each stop was accompanied by little-known facts and great stories. If you have any interest in Shakespeare and the world he lived in, I highly recommend his tour.

Today was a great day! I saw so many hidden-away pockets within the Blackfriars area where I now know Shakespeare spent much of his time living and writing (near the Globe Theatre). These little treasures I would have never discovered on my own. Declan, literally an expert on

Thanks Sydney! So glad it was good enough for you to want to secretly record (although in reality I don't allow recording of the Tour, in the same way that people aren't allowed to record plays or films). Don't forget, and this is for other people reading this too, that once you have done my 'Shakespeare in the City Walk' just come to me direct (in other words don't book it online) and you can come on my OTHER tour, 'The Blood and Tears walk' for £5 cash only. I reward loyalty....

I am revisiting Shakespeare as a retirement "project". Declan's tour was very informative and interesting. He has certainly done his research and I am looking forward to his book (he had better hurry though!). His tour does not cover the Southbank (Globe)which I have visited
