- Y9865KBkellyb0 contributionsFantastic experienceThis punting company is probably one of THE BEST in Cambridge. We had a young lad called Jake (Jacob) as our guide and as he took myself, husband and 4 kids down the River Cam. There wasn’t a thing that he didn’t know when it came to the history of the area as well as the buildings/bridges and sites we were passing. All the other punters we saw didn’t seem to be speaking at all and their driving was a little dodgy ;) Jacob was personable, fun and made our day. My 4 kids loved him and said it was an unforgettable experience. He was able to relate to them which made it for me as I thought they may get bored. Overall lovely relaxing punting trip and well worth the money.Written 10 July 2024
- Neil G0 contributionsAppalling service.Went to Cambridge with my wife for my birthday, met Harvey by the bridge and was offered a good price (we thought at the time) we had a meal booked at 1 so booked a punt ride for 3… however when we tried to pay, the card machine would not work, we tried at least 5 or 6 times with 3 cards, but it was broken. Harvey called the dock and explained what was happening and to book us in for 3pm. We offered to walk down to the dock and pay, but we were told, “ you don’t need to do that now, pay at 3 when you arrive” so we left. We went to the bank and got cash just in case the machine at the dock did not work either. We then had a lovely meal at the ivy and returned in good time for our punt, we got in the queue, and were asked if we had paid, we said no and explained what happened and tried to pay then. But we were told by a very rude woman that because we had not paid our place was not available, “ how do we know if you would show up!” She then said Harvey was wrong to not send you down to pay “I told him to” but we were there when Harvey spoke to her, so I believe she lied to cover her mistake. It was made out that we were at fault, yet all we did was follow their instructions. My wife was devastated, she had been looking forward to the trip for months. We had to stand there trying to argue our point with a host of spectators being made to feel as if we were in the wrong, when we had simply done as we were told. She was rude, condescending and clearly did not care. Fortunately for us we met a lovely guy from Cambridge Punters who offered us a ride after a short wait at a much cheaper price. So my advice to anyone going to Cambridge and wanting a punt ride, would be avoid Rutherfords and seek out Cambridge Punters who saved the day for us, Dan our “driver” was superb…Written 19 May 2024
- MartynM_130 contributionsRutherfords Punting tours SUPERBWe had a family weekend in Cambridge for a 21st birthday celebration as part of this we booked a private punting tour along the river Cam with Champagne with Rutherfords The staff were polite and gave us a warm welcome our punter Felix was amusing and engaging and really made the experience a lot of fun and very informative with lots of anecdotes about the universities and alumni We stopped for more refreshments at the Pima barge as it was a very warm Sunday At the end of the tour we asked Felix if he recommended anywhere to visit he told us the Tivoli bar was a good choice and gave us instructions how to get there We took his advice and had a great fun afternoon of mini golf and lunch and drinks on their rooftop bar Would highly recommend this company if you are visiting Cambridge and fancy a punting tour it’s definitely a highlightWritten 13 May 2024

We booked the shared punting tour for 5pm and the boat was ready at that time. Our guide Olly was courteous and very good and seemed to move faster than the other boats. The tour guide gave facts and historical events of each place we passed on the river which was very busy at the time. The tour was for about 45 mins. We had wonderful experience on punting tour with Olly and recommend this tour to anyone visiting Cambridge.
Five stars to Olly and punting tour company.

Booking was straightforward and everything seemed well enough organised when we got there.
More importantly, however, the person taking us - Yancen - was very capable not only as a tour guide but also as a punt handler. This bexame particularly apparent whe having to negotiate round quite a number of novice punters on the river all whilst keeping track of what she was telling us and what we were passing by. Very well managed.

A boat trip, with a young girl who explained the monuments to us and told us the anecdotes linked to these monuments, it was perfect. Our only regret was that she didn't speak French, so we had to make her repeat it to understand what she was saying (speak slowly).
Very nice experience, to be repeated.

As a first time experiencing a punting tour I can only share me experience with this being such a terrible and frustrating experience. Me and my partner was looking so forward to this and learning so much about Cambridge and the history. However this was not the case at all! We was put into a punting boat along with a partying specialty of mixed ages and our time during this was totally wasted and ruined. We was surrounded by alcohol, vapes, loud music and immature adults splashing water for absolutely no reason. The tour guide themself had no intention to give a tour and talk about the historic buildings we was going past instead thought it was professional to chat up girls and drink alcohol. I am totally disgusted by this and totally let down by the company I booked with. The staff that me and my partner spoke to before entering the punting boat were able to see they society of people entering and instead of asking us if we wanted to wait and go onto a different boat, laughed, and said good luck!!! Absolutely disgraceful and so unnecessary. I don’t find it a problem at all if you wanted to have a drink whilst experiencing this but I don’t agree with being surrounded by idiots who think it’s a great idea to shout at other people across the river, splash water, smoke vapes and wave alcoholic drinks around me and my partner. I completely wasted my money and mine and my partners time with this. I advise anyone that has booked is be prepared for anything and be cautious otherwise your experience could end up the same.

We're deeply sorry to hear about your disappointing and frustrating experience. It’s completely unacceptable for a punting tour, which should be a relaxing and informative activity, to be ruined in this way. Your expectations of learning about Cambridge and its rich history should have been met, and it’s concerning that they were not. The unprofessional behaviour of the guide and the lack of consideration from the staff are particularly troubling. Your feedback is appreciated so that we can make sure this doesn't happen again. We're truly sorry that you had this experience and hope that you might consider coming back again for the usual standard of tour we pride ourselves in.

My wife and I went punting yesterday and booked on to a 4.30pm tour. Clearly it was a busy day for all operators as most had an hour to an hour and a half wait. A representative said the wait for Rutherfords was less than half an hour for a guided and informative tour so we decided to book and paid for this. When we arrived at the welcome desk as indicated it was not the most warm welcome at all and again, as stated, I appreciate it was a busy day but on the basis guided punts are not a cheap experience, a little sincerity and a bit of customer service would be nice. After checking our ticket we were asked to wait and told we were waiting for two more people. When those didn’t arrive we were told we could board the boat and they filled the vacant two spots with others. We were told our guide would look after us and set off on our 45 minute tour. Our punter was extremely skilled in navigating the waterway which was extremely crowded with other tours and hired punts. However it was very much a case of he barged his way through much of the river by forcing the punt through and hitting plenty of other punts often those being operated through other tour companies which seemed extremely rude and unprofessional as he was clearly in a hurry. The boat was comfy but sadly the comfort did not make up for the absolute and complete lack of information being provided. In the entire 45 minutes the experience lasted we were given a total of 4 bits of very brief 1 line commentary and the majority of the tour was in silence. In fact what facts we did garner were largely from listening to the other operators information being given to their tours. In short I appreciate the guides had probably had long days by this point and were tired and stressed from the busy river however what must be appreciated is that we are paying for a service and experience and if the guide isn’t up to providing that information and service in a safe and acceptable manner then they shouldn’t be doing the tour. It was absolutely not worth the money as the experience offered in no way was delivered. My wife and I were extremely disappointed and as soon as we got back it was everyone off and get the next lot on as quickly as possible. With all the other tours the guides were constantly delivering information and communicating with those on their tours and this was a disappointing experience that was little more than a boat ride for 45 minutes bouncing off other punts. I’d use one of the other operators for the same price but actual getting what is offered and a decent tour with information as opposed to someone in a hurry trying ti barge their way through which no other tour operators appeared to do while we were out.

I had pre booked a shared punting tour for 3pm on Good Friday (7th April 2023). Whilst I understand that this is a particularly busy day for punting, we were left disappointed with our experience.
When we arrived we queued to 'check in'. Upon providing our details, we were told that we were not on the booking system and that there had been a glitch on the website. The member of staff at the 'check in' area was very apologetic and told us that we could either book on to a boat a few hours later or get a refund from his manager at the quayside. He called his 'manager' and told us to go down to see him. We were told he would be wearing the same uniform as his colleague. We understood that it was not his fault so we agreed to walk down to get the refund. I felt as if the 'check in' member of staff was quite overwhelmed!
Upon arriving at the quayside, we could not find a man dressed in the same uniform as the 'check in' member of staff. It was busy so I understand that it is quite hard to find one particular person but there were no people dressed the same down there. I asked another company whether they knew where he was. They pointed me in his direction and I approached the Rutherfords member of staff. As I approached, the man walked away from me at some speed in the opposite direction. This happened twice until I managed to get close enough to him to discuss our situation. He appeared to act as if he was going to do us a favour by refunding us even though it was a mistake made by the company. I was not satisfied that he was going to ensure we received a refund as he simply just took a photo of an email on my phone and said he would do it later. This is not the service that I would expect when a mistake was made by the company which was not our fault.
I contacted the email address that was on the bottom of my confirmation email. I was impressed with the speed of response from your customer service member of staff (Georgia) and she was very helpful and apologetic for the situation. I have now received my refund and this was received in a timely manner.
Overall, we had a very disappointing experience with Rutherfords. The only thing keeping this from being a 1 star review is the customer service I received via email. I feel that if your staff on the day had provided a similar level of customer care and consideration, then we would have been disappointed that we had this cancelled but could have accepted that it was a mistake. The 'manager' made the overall experience an unhappy one.
To add - The group who were in front of us in the queue also had the same problem and were visibly annoyed that this had occurred. Although the 'check in' member of staff was apologetic and was trying to diffuse the situation, when he called his manager it was evident that his manager was adamant that he tried to upsell a private tour to them. This appeared to be quite inappropriate and initially gave customers around the impression that the main motivation was to get them to pay more.

I'm sorry to hear about your disappointing experience, and I appreciate your detailed feedback. It’s clear that we fell short in several areas during your visit, particularly with the booking mix-up and communication from our team. Your concerns about the manager's response and the upselling approach are noted, and we will address this with our staff to ensure better customer service in the future. We're glad to hear Georgia was helpful in resolving your refund promptly. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we hope you might consider giving us another chance in the future.

This was an excellent tour and rounded off our day trip to Cambridge (one I hope of many). Jackson was very informative, knowledgeable, and able to answer all questions fired at him. Despite the many boats on the Cam it was,at times, quite a calming and peaceful journey, in amongst the glorious buildings and vistas, and sunshine! I loved the views, history and uncertainty of who was going to bump into us next - the amateurs having a go! 🤣. The punt was comfy, with plenty of space for 3 abreast, and with giant umbrellas to cater for rain or shine.

Thank you for your wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that Jackson made your tour informative and enjoyable, and that you loved the mix of history, views, and the lively atmosphere on the river. Not the best of starts as the reservation I had made was not registered on the computer at the jetty. Staff were apologetic and got us on a trip 15 minutes later. Nice relaxing trip along the busy river ably punted by Alex. He was indeed the highspot of the tour; he was friendly, interesting and a very interesting young man, despite being a student at Bristol University
I do feel the tours were very overpriced; someone is making an awful lot of money and I hope the chauffeurs get a decent share. When yoy consider that our put had 12 people who paid £35 each (£420) for 45 minutes. Mulitply that by the 20 or more punts that were out at the same time and someone is making far too much

We booked an executive king room for our 34th wedding anniversary, the room was so spacious with a large balcony. The bed was huge. Lovely touches such as nespresso machine and cups and saucers. The bathroom was luxurious with huge shower. All very clean and well maintained. One of the brackets above the bed was broken which held a decorative fabric wall hanging. Apart from that the room was perfect. The only negative I have is the doors do not close quietly so we heard doors slamming down the corridor late night and early morning.

We bought the punting tickets right outside Cambridge train station. The man there told us to find location “CA5 8AQ” on Google maps and it will direct right to where we will get aboard. We followed Google map and the location is somewhere between the buildings and as first timers in the town we have no idea where to go. It took us a while to find the riverside and find the punting tour meeting point. But we were a couple of minutes late and missed the boat. People from the company simply declined our request of fitting us in the following available boat while they are still trying to find more customers for the following time slots. They don’t even seem to take any efforts to make things right. Bad service!
