- Winch500 contributionsGreat way to spend a wet afternoon.A really interesting tour, we learnt a lot about the copper mining the took place here. Our guide, Spencer, was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Loved the Boom presentation at the end of the tour. Our grandchildren enjoyed panning for gold. Interesting exhibitions too.Written 7 June 2024

- Brigid S0 contributionsDiscover one of BC's IndustriesA great day traveling into the Britannia Mine via the train wearing our hardhats. Then Angela gave us a walking tour of the inside of the mine shaft and the use of some of the equipment. There were people of all ages and we had received an email regarding wearing closed toed shoes because it is wet and the ground is uneven, as well as a jacket because it is cold inside the mine. The BOOM presentation was a perfect ending to the whole experience.Written 20 August 2023
- Maya53110 contributionsFantastic experience - highly recommendStoped in here on the way back from Whistler having seen it on the way up but not had time to go in. Without google maps we’d have never found the entrance / parking. There are signs from the road but they stop and there isn’t one at the right turn off or at the parking lot. We guessed where to go and got it right. They definitely need a sign at the junction from the sea to sky highway. The actual museum is great with lots of interactive activities and exhibits. There’s even a panning for gold activity. When we arrived there was a tour leavening in 20 for the mine so we were able to get on that. It’s an hour with half in the mine and the other half in the boom show. I wasn’t sure how claustrophobic the mine would be but it was not bad at all. The tour was very good and informative. The highlight of the tour was definitely the boom show. I had a rough idea what to expect but it was even better in person. It was great to see they used the building as a filming location for a few movies! If you are in the area I’d highly recommend a visit to the mine. It’s an easy trip from Vancouver too and is fun for all the family.Written 9 August 2023

- Loreal_Klassen0 contributionsHIGHLY recommend! My husband and I decided to stop at the Britannia Mine Museum yesterday on our way back from a night in Whistler. I remember doing the gold panning activity as a child but have always wanted to go into the actual mill! First we spent an hour going through all the self guided buildings. Then we did the underground train tour. We were able to see one of the mining drills run. Ashley was so informative and we loved learning how copper was mined. We were also shown how the miners used candles and took core samples. Then we watched the Boom show which was absolutely amazing! We finally got to see the inside of the mill and learn about the process of each level. The Boom show was so captivating- from the lighting, sounds, and scents. We were blown away! The whole experience was incredible and I can't stop thinking about how wild it would be to live through that!Written 18 October 2020
- 382PaulK0 contributionsFascinating history, well displayedThere’s so much to see here, and so much to learn. The size of the operation, the equipment, the underground workings, the mill and shops, all presented clearly on models and story boards, the guided underground tour, and audio-visual displays including the high-wattage simulation of the sounds of the working mill. I hope they’ll continue to restore the mill building, as the opportunity to tour more of it, from the ore car entry at the top to the vacuum filters at the bottom, would be unbeatable.Written 3 August 2020
- Roary_and_Friends0 contributionsIncredible museumI’ve seen this museum countless times driving between Vancouver and Whistler. Looking for something to do with my kids, I decided to come here. It was way better than I had expected. Tickets can only be bought online with specific time slots for the underground tour. The confirmation emails are a bit confusing because they all give slightly different details when to arrive. To be clear, you need to be at the underground tour 15 min before the scheduled tour start. To get to that tour on time, you should be there 30-45 minutes to allow time to park, get in and walk to the underground tour waiting area. The rest of the museum you can go at your own pace. There are several parts to the museum, but the main draws are these three: - the underground tour where go into the original mine shafts that are about 100 years old. It’s an immersive experience where you get a flavour of the working conditions of the miners. They had it tough. The tour guide we had, Jessica, was excellent. - Boom experience - a 4D experience within one of the original mills. A very good show, but it’s the building itself which is the real star. Just incredible to imagine the scale of the operation. - Gold panning - Any opportunity to play in water and find sparkly rocks and gems will always be a winner for young children. Can easily spend an hour on this section if you’re not watching the clock. There are other, more traditional museum displays, but it’s the 3 listed above that elevates this museum from average to beyond expectations. Just a great visit. The staff were fantastic. I learned a lot, and the kids loved the gold panning. A great family activity. Highly recommend.Written 24 July 2020
- Deborah W0 contributionsBeyond Expectations! It was advertised on Global News and so glad it was! We would've missed this gem. The ride up was gorgeous. The museum was well laid out with many activities and so much information. The movie "Boom!" was well done and took place in the Concentrator which was very cool. We would do it again. It's great for all ages. It includes the movie, gold panning, an underground train ride and many buildings to browse through. Wow!Written 6 November 2019
- Rick S0 contributionsWell-laid out and educationalAs a "historian", I tend to be a little picky about what I think of tours and museums. However, the Britannia Mine Museum was excellent. The highlight was the 15-minute multimedia show inside the stamping mill which used lights and actual equipment to give a brief history of the mine. The guide was very knowlegeable and we were able to spend some time after the show walking around inside the stamping mill. Highly recommended!!Written 26 October 2019

We spent 2.5 hours at this museum. On the website it states you must book 12+ hours in advance but when we arrived you could pay at the site. The staff were helpful and friendly and we started in the small cafe before moving on to walk to the guided part of the visit at the mine entrance up the hill. Our guide was pleasant but obviously new and nervous and it was often difficult to hear what he was saying. The short journey on the train into the shaft was interesting and the subsequent visit to the huge copper extraction building was the highlight and fascinating with an excellent multimedia presentation. After this we visited the different buildings with machinery and samples of minerals. Overall a very good experience,

We visited, having pre-booked, and had a small number in our tour group at the beginning of the day.My daughters, 6 and 13, both enjoyed the tour and Boom! Felt like we learnt a lot from our knowledgable tour guide, who engaged both the children and adults in the group. We loved the interactivity elements of this place and panning for gold was the icing on the cake!Would totally recommend a visit.

Every time I go back they have added something new. Because of Covid, there were some changes that actually made the experience better. We came without reservations and could have seen part of the exhibit but chose to book for the next day so we could take advantage of the whole place. The train entrance is up three flights of stairs which can be a bit challenging for those with mobility issues. Otherwise it was very easy to move around the site. The train trip itself was much better now that they limit the number of visitors on each train and kept us socially distanced. We could see much better which is an advantage for those with children. There are so many buildings with exhibits and a play area for kids. We very much enjoyed the gold panning. There is a cafe that we didn't visit this time. The gift shop has a huge variety of inexpensive items all the way to very costly ones. The big bonus was the show Boom in the big mine building itself. Very entertaining for every age and very innovative. Nothing negative to say about any part of the experience.

The guide on tour was very knowledgeable and friendly; She gave us a comprehensive overview of the mine's history and significance as a major source of copper in its time. Highly recommend.

If you like educational experiences, this one was a good one. Our tour guide, Demi, made it interesting and answered all questions. Now I can stop wondering what that big building (the concentrator) is every time I drove past it on my way to Whistler. I thought the BOOM! presentation was interesting, but what I found most interesting was the Administration Building after the underground tour. Reading the quotes from people who lived in Britannia Beach and The Townsite/Mt. Sheer, you can see that it was a very close community that was isolated from the rest of the world; a boat was the only way in or out. They loved their safe, open-door community and they did everything together. They appreciated the copper mine for all it brought to their lives...employment, income, purpose, a way of life, a safe place to raise a family with really good schools. They also appreciated the isolation that shielded them from Vancouver's problems. They loved the light and the loud noise from the concentrator. It all gave them hope.

This was recommended to us and we really enjoyed it.
The short ride into the mine gives you a sense of what the miners did daily.
Our guide, Glen was great. He explained everything along the way including giving a heads up when a couple of the demonstrations would be very loud and to cover our ears.
Afterwards we were directed to see the Boom experience which is very good. No video or photography allowed so I will not spoil it but this was very interesting and thoroughly enjoyed it.
There are buildings and big equipment to view and see on the grounds. You can also pan for “gold”. Kids that were there that day seemed to really like this.
I recommend you wear, sweater/jacket & pants as the mine area is very damp and quite chilly. Ground inside the mine is wet & muddy.
Very interesting history to this mine.

A hidden gem along the popular highway from Vancouver to Squamish&Whistler that's well worth the stop. They deliver a tour with a ride into the mine shaft and live displays of use of a drilling machine and more. The ore processing building portion was fascinating. I enjoyed seeing and learning the history of the mining community through the years.

My family and I went there on our way to Squamish.
The visit started with a 15 minutes movie about the mine but not what happened in the mines that will be for later! As we headed into the mines in a minecart, we got greeted by a lovely tour guide called Mae. It took a few minutes to get into the mountain; there, Mae explained and showed the tools used by miners. Mae told us about how it was like to be mining for long shifts. She also led us to the lighting at that time. The tour visit ended with Boom, an immersive live-action experience inside mil. We then went to the part where the museum hid actual ores such as copper, diamonds, silver, bronze and even gold nuggets, and if we found it, we kept it!
We highly recommend this museum, and we thank Mae for her dynamism and very instructive explanation and demonstration.

Outstanding mining museum between Vancouver and Squamish. Exceptional guide Derek was a wealth of knowledge and an excellent speaker; 10/10! We were 2 families with kids ranging in age from 7-15, and everyone had an awesome time exploring the museum, panning for 'precious gems' and 'gold' (kids could've done this all day, had to pry them away), and enjoying the Boom show. Parents loved the well-presented history and the clean and modern facilities. Highly recommend!

As a resident of Vancouver I have driven past Britannia Mine countless times on my way to Whistler but never stopped to take in the tour. Finally while entertaining friends from the US we made a point of visiting. We were not disappointed.
The museum is a combination of informative exhibits and a guided tour inside the mine itself. Guests are taken into a mine tunnel on a little train once used to shuttle mine workers and once inside the tour guide provides a highly informative primer on mine operations and even demonstrates some of the drilling equipment. After that, guests enter the main building where the rock was crushed and are treated to a very professional and entertaining video presentation that ingeniously interacts with the cavernous building you're sitting in. All of it is very well done and is entertaining for children and adults alike.
One thing to note: This tour requires walking on uneven surfaces and climbing a number of stairs. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with mobility issues. Some children might find the few loud noises or moments of darkness unsettling - or thrilling! Also bring a sweater as it's a bit chilly inside the mine.
