About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 870gillj0 contributionsGreat TimeExcellent full day excursion! The crew in each section was great. The food was just so-so. The photographer made us all look like models. Party boat back - great fun!Written 13 September 2024
- 175bene0 contributionsBe wary, this provider over-sellsFirstly, just to make it clear, I did not actually go on the tour. This review relates to booking. I was able to book the tour with this operator through Get Your Guide but the operator did not have capacity to fulfill the booking - they were over booked. I then requested an immediate refund, only to be advised I needed to contact Get Your Guide. I did this but told this can take upto 14 days, but could be 3-5. If the operator had told Get Your Guide they didn't have capacity (which I have been informed they did not) I would not have booked this trip. I would have chosen an alternative.Written 7 September 2024
- tedi92110 contributionsUnforgettable Caribbean Adventure: A Must-Try Experience in the Dominican RepublicGreat trip! The bus arrived on time, and everything was well organized. Our tour guide spoke three languages and explained even the smallest details about the trip and the culture of the Dominican Republic to everyone. Unlimited rum was provided on both boats! :) The food on the island was more than enough, with cold beer and good music—what more do you need in the Caribbean? I highly recommend this trip for the price you pay!Written 26 August 2024

- K1543NPfrankh0 contributionsAll day tour or Saona Island and Altos de ChavonWe scheduled this trip with two couples from Cap Cana. The day was very beautiful. There was a little spot in the transportation that my driver pulled the van over to the side of the road and tried to tell me I was on the wrong bus. I was alarmed as I thought I was being told to get off the bus. Upon further discussion, there was another van to pick up my group right behind this van. The purpose was because my small group was going to Altos de Chavon.....just a moment of panic that could have been prevented with communication. On to Altos de Chavon...beautiful place, but we were not there long enough to see much. Best part of the day was Saona for sure. I would have loved to have spent the entire day on this island. So beautiful and the food was amazing. The speed boat ride to the sand bar was AMAZING. The water was crystal clear and my group loved the time in the water there. The catamaran ride was very nice. We were tired and just laid around on the front of the boat for most of the time. Drinks were just ok though on the boat. Now for the pictures...too many posed pictures and time taking pictures. I did not want all of the pictures and was not allowed to purchase the two that I did want. That part confused me! On another note, with all the transfers and different boats and vans we rode, I felt like I was tipping all day long! They are also not shy to ask!!! All and all, it was a spectacular day...worth the money (even with all the traveling). When we return, we will just try and find a full day at Saona though. The water was unreal!! Sept 2021
The day started by poor communication and requiring a 6:30 pickup time. They clarified at 6:45 that it was actually a 7:00 pickup time so we waited in the lobby of the hotel for 45 minutes. We were the first ones on the bus at Macao beach. The bus proceeded to pickup passengers from ~10 different resorts. Keep in mind that we were picked up so early that we were not able to eat anything at our resort. There was a quick stop at a location where they force everyone off the bus to sell overpriced souvenirs and food. We had to purchase food since we were exceedingly hungry at this point. We arrived in the boat port location at 10:00 and then waited another 30 to 45 minutes before getting on a speed boat at ~10:45. When we finally reach the natural pool, you find out that the open bar is a warm bottle of coke and warm rum being passed around. Once you get to the island, there is more waiting and then you finally have lunch and the food is completely unacceptable. There is a decent variety but the quality is extremely bad / not edible. We stayed on the island for ~2.5 hours not the advertised 3 hour duration and half the time was devoted to organizing / moving the groups of people around. The return route was on the catamaran which was very enjoyable, but the open bar is also just a warm bottle of coke and warm rum. Our boat actually ran out of water for people to drink about halfway through the route. We got back to the boat port at 4:30 and it took 30 minutes to get all the people back on the bus and then we were the last stop and arrived at 7:00 to our hotel. I want to say that the people associated with the tour, the driver, the boat personnel were all very good and I have no complaints about them. However, the experience as a whole is falsely advertised and very poorly executed and communicated. I will never use this touring organization again and a simple refund doesn’t even come close to apologizing or gaining our favor again. I feel like they took 6-8 hours out of each of our vacation (12-16 hours total) which is priceless.

Disaster tour, wouldn't recommend this to anyone. I will give you just the facts of our day. We were picked up from our hotel at 7:30 in the morning the bus kept leaking disgusting dirty water on us in our seats. We finally got to the catamaran boat and they crammed us all in with no covid regulation being adhered to or enforced. We got to the island at 1, there was seaweed everywhere after we were told there would not be. (One of the reasons for going was, our hotel on Atlantic side was covered in more seaweed than I could imagine). Immediately put our stuff down had to get on a long line for food. Had an hour and 15 minutes after that to relax and enjoy the water before we left and they ran out of beer. So not 3 hours, 2 hours. The natural swimming hole is just another part of the Caribbean where you can stand shoulder height in the water and there MIGHT be large starfish. It's not a swimming hole or a Cenote, it's the same Beach. And then lucky us after being crammed in what is supposed to be a speed boat ride home, again covid safety not being enforced, one of our engines breaks down. They did not ask passing boats for help, they did not call for a boat back and they did not give us any information as to what was happening but that we would be 30 minutes late. Try 2 hours. We did not get back to our hotel till 8. worst trip ever. no apologies, constantly hounded to have pictures taken so they could charge you a ridiculous amount to get your digital photos. I would not recommend this to anyone. There are definitely better tours out there, don't put yourself in this situation if you don't have to. This is our sixth trip to the Dominican Republic and the reason why we never leave the resort

I really looked forward to going on this excursion and on the day I was very disappointed. I booked the excursion for Thursday August 31 and we were told the day before pick up will be 6:55 in our hotel lobby. My friend and I got to the lobby and started walking around asking for the driver. We were not giving a description of the driver. We were not told what he’d be wearing nothing. We saw a few drivers and they all had signs calling out the names of those they were picking up but I didn’t hear my name being called. Showed all the drivers even taxi drivers my e ticket and one driver told us our driver should be here in 5 minutes. Waited still didn’t see or hear my name, went to WhatsApp to message the company only to see a WhatsApp called and messages at 6:58 three minutes after the stated pick up time that the driver is waiting and he left. I have screenshots to prove and videos of us waiting and no one. Only to be told we will have to reschedule and pay an additional 20 USD per person to reschedule or we will have to find our way to the beach to meet the boat. I had to constantly press by the way and that’s how I was told what the options were. No attempt to call the driver and ask him to come for us given the short time frame. We rescheduled for the following day after a long back and fort with no sense of trying to help. Woke up the following morning went to the lobby extremely early and started videoing. We witnessed the driver pull up stand outside on his phone just looking myself and another group had to go up to him and ask if he was the driver, he checked his list and the first thing he asked was for the additional reschedule money. I am a trained Hospitality Manager with almost 10 years experience and believe when I say this was one of the worst services I’ve ever experienced. I would not recommend this company to anyone until they improve the customer service experience and train staff members. Saona island is beautiful and I would love everyone to experience it but definitely with another company not Caribbean Route.

If you book this trip, expect the following: 2 to 3 hour bus ride with an unnecessary stop at a souvenir shop, just "to change cloths and go to the toilet".. and that's of course the only reason, since 5 to 6 other busses do exactly the same. Next up, you'll have either a speed boat, or catamaran ride (more on that later) to Saona Island, stopping at a "nature pool", which in fact is only just the sea with large a sand bank. There'll be around 20 other boats, each one trying to play louder music than the other. You're not gonna see any sealife there, because - so I hope - it evaded this area. Once you reach Saona Island, you're going to have lunch at an overcrowded beach. The lunch is going to be served cold, but according to the tour guide it's the best one could get. In all honesty, the snacks from the minibar at your resort are gourmet food compared to what you'll get there. You'll then have around 1 hour left before you leave that place. You can spend that time letting the 3(!) photographers taking expensive pictures of you (120$ for around 30 pictures), or getting an (even according to the tour guide) overpriced massage. On your way back, you'll probably find yourself aboard the party catamaran, where they blow every last little remaining bit of carribean flair away with loud music, silly dancers, and cheap, but urgently needed alcohol.
Long story short: We were never as happy to be back at the resort then after this trip!
P.S. Did you read anything about snorkeling in this review? No, because it's not happening, even if you were told that this trip includes it.

It was advertised as an open bar excursion. After you book it then they tell you that they cannot serve alcohol. However when we arrived on the island they were more than happy to sell us $10 piña colada’s. Also The on way the bus stopped at a little market so we could buy alcohol. You could buy a Styrofoam cooler with a 12 pack in it for 50 bucks.
On the catamaran on the way back, The deck hands were begging for five dollar tips for each person in our party, they did it to all the guests on the boat. We tipped a lot less than we normally would have just because of the fact did they put us on the spot this was very uncomfortable.

It was a fantastic trip! I bought the tickets through sunwing, on the plane which indeed was cheaper, I recommend buying them while you are on board because they were $130 cad, and if I were bought them at the resort it would have been in USD. even with other trips you find interesting I would book them on the plane.
the trip itself was beautiful, first, we got picked up from our hotel in Punta Cana at around 6:30, and they dropped us off at the hard rock cafe (MUST VISIT the patio at hard rock in the morning it's so gorgeous!) we were there for about an hour to go on a bigger bus, it was about an hour drive from the hard rock cafe to where the catamaran was, the catamaran ride was great! it took about an hour to get to our first stop where we could go in the water and swim for 30 minutes, then they took us to saona island, we arrived there at about 1:30 there was lunch, and all-inclusive drinks on the island, we could roam and swim around the island, but had to be back at our meeting point at 4;30, we took a speedboat back and that took about 30 minutes
overall it was a nice island and a nice place to visit. I visited Cuba, and personally, I think the beaches were the same, but it was a good day trip! would I do it again? probably not, but I would recommend going if you haven't seen turquoise waters!
enjoy!

While our general experience in Punta Cana was mediocre due to it being over-touristy and ridiculously expensive at times, this daytrip was a welcome exception to that.
The trip used different transportations when going to the island and when coming back. We went there with a speedboat and it was fun jumping on the waves, but came back with a private catamaran which took two hours and was even better.
The return trip was actually a highlight of the trip for us. It featured two hours of dancing to dominican bachata and merengue rythms. If that's what you're looking for then I highly recommend this trip. We're into latin american dancing and hence the maximum star rating from us.
However, if you're left wondering "what's bachata" then your mileage might wary. If all you want to do is relaxing on a beach then this trip might not be for you. It seems that different tour operators have a dedicated section of the beach and the one we went to was not perferct. It had some rocks in the bottom instead of sand and we only spent about 2 hours on the island. None of that was a problem for us and the return trip with dancing more than made up for that -- IF you're into such a thing.
All in all we loved this tour, but make sure what you're getting into. If you would like to dance (or try it out then go for it). If you want to chill then there are alternatives that cater more precisely to your wishes.

Leaving at 7:30 a.m. from our Serenade hotel in Punta Cana, we picked up other tourists in other hotels around ours by bus. We arrived at Bayaibe where a boat was waiting for us. We sailed to the so-called natural swimming pool, no interest. There were at least 10...15 armored tourist boats, murky water, no fish, no interest. And here we go again for the island. Arrive at 1 p.m. to eat pasta or if you have 100 dollars you will be entitled to a lobster.
We are parked on a defined piece of beach because every tourist boat finds itself a real factory there!!!
The beach is very postcard beautiful but at 2:45 p.m. it's time to leave, no need to tell you that you barely have time to digest...
We were not allowed to go to the shops that exist on this island (already been in 2016, better time it saves money, at the time there were starfish at the "natural swimming pool" but the entertainers on the boats took them out to take photos which they obviously sold to tourists since there are no more).
And here we go again by boat which took us on a catamaran packed with people to party tightly like sardines.
Anyway, late return to the hotel.
We paid 75 EUR it's not worth it.

Beautiful beach, beautiful water! If you could find a direct way there it would be worth it, but for the time in the bus and multiple boats, just not worth it! First off we were picked up at 7:30am from our resort. We drove about 15 minutes and did a transfer at a gas station. We then drove about half way there and stopped at a lousy touristy shopping store, not worth your time, over priced cheap merchandise. We finally made it to the port, hopped on a transfer boat to the catamaran. Had to jump railings to get to the boat, would NOT recommend for older passengers. We were then on our way to the island. They stated there would be snacks and drink on the boat, nope, only dixie cup of soda. We finally made it to the island, as I said, beautiful. Didn't arrive until noon! By that time we are starving...ok lunch, pork chops were really good. Again, small glasses of soda.
Were given 2 hours on the island before we got on the boat again. Went snorkling for 15 minutes, enjoyed time on the sand bar in middle of ocean. Kind of cool. Saw the starfish, but in order to hold it you needed to get your picture taken, that they try to sell you later on. We got back to the port, didn't mention the multiple vendors that are trying to sell you cheap merchandise. We finally made it back to the resort at 5pm. An all day event. Overall experience just not worth it to me.

The island is indeed beautiful; however, the tour guide and other crew on the catamaran were super irritating. They were trying to sell unnecessary things, forcing you to get the pictures clicked which were for $10 USD per picture. Who the hell charges this much for a normal pic?? On the island itself there too many ladies pitching for a massage. Danny boy, tour guide was trying to fool the customers by asking them to buy from a random cigar shop. He honestly wasted our 25 mins on that stop. Food was good. Plus you only get 1.5 hour on the island.
The driver who was dropping us at the hotel was high and was driving rash. Super mismanaged. Would not recommend this tour.

Buenos días!! Quiero sacar 4 pax para Isla Saona en Punta Cana, pero el único horario que me ofrece y no me deja modificar es a las 06:30, nos parece demasiado temprano, es el único horario de salida? No hay más opciones? Aguardo respuesta. Gracias!!

Is there a toilet on board or any of the busses?
Written 3 March 2024
The bus makes a stop on the way to the port, there are toilets there. There are no toilets on the smaller boats but there are on the catamarans. There are also toilets on the island.
Written 10 July 2024
It rained on us a little bit and the tour was not cancelled. It would be cancelled if there was a large storm but will continue if it only rains slightly. The smaller boats had a cover that could drop down to help protect from the rain and the catamarans have a section that is also protected from rain.

When we get to Saona island will it be packed with other boats … what do they offer as open bar ?

There were only a few other boats when we were there but we were there early. The open bar had fresh pineapple and coconut drinks, in addition to beers and sodas.
