- ericayvales0 contributionsNot your average Jewish history tour! (totally worth it!!!)It was the perfect tour. Our tour guide, Seraphina, was very knowledgeable, responded to all the questions we had, and was friendly. We learned a lot about old Jewish spaces and communities through this tour, and it delivers what it promises: you actually get a comprehensive and rounded story of rabbis, writers, and radicals in Montreal. Remarkably, there was a lot to see walking around during two hours on a neighborhood that is not that big. You get a Canadian specific history of Jewish immigration, which means that you also learn a little bit about Canada's history. It was a very unique non touristic area of Montreal, for people who are interested to see "where the real people live" where they travel. Totally worth it!Written 27 November 2024
- Pam C0 contributionsInformative and delicious! This was a informative and delicious tour that provided a history of Jewish Montreal. AJ was a wonderful, knowledgeable and engaging guide. The food was plentiful including 2 sandwiches, babka and bagels. Another highlight was not having to wait in line for highly sought after treats. Highly recommended!Written 10 November 2024
- AmyLGould0 contributionsBeyond the Bagel Tour - highly recommendBeyond the Bagel Tour This tour was highly enjoyable and very informative. Our tour guide Ella was dynamic, intelligent, enthusiastic and engaging. We sampled many treats in the four hours we were together - two different Hungarian desserts, two different types of bagels, a wonderful babka and a sandwich from Schwartz’s. By the end of the tour, it felt like we were all friends. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in learning about the history of Jews in Montreal and their cultural influences on the food scene.Written 21 October 2024

- Happiestonthemove0 contributionsThis is NOT a food tourOur guide was a lovely fresh graduate, enthusiastic and though not Jewish, knowledgeable. The issue was with the actual tour – we have done many food tours across many countries – this was more expensive than most and the worst. The food was not thought out in terms of quantity or structure – it was over lunch and all we got were pieces of dough in various forms. We went to two bagel stores and got the same sesame bagel in both – and both times dry with no cream cheese to spread or anything. The highlight was the Schwartz sandwich – and we were only given half a sandwich each…. Very disappointing overall and absolutely NOT worth the cost in comparison to even other tours we have taken - even in Montreal… The pics cover pretty much all the food we got…,Written 15 October 2024
- leerR2138ZW0 contributionsOutstanding Jewish historical tourExcellent historical tour of Mile End and the surrounding area! Our guide was engaging and happy to answer questions, and the neighborhood is delightfully dense with Jewish history.Written 9 October 2024

- ninas3430 contributionsA slice of Montreal's Jewish History and foodWe took the Beyond the bagel - walking tour. It was excellent. Very knowledgable guide who provided a great deal of information about the food, Bagels, smoked meat ans much history besides. we learned ate and walked. Bring some small sandwich bags to store the goodies you may not be able to finish.Written 25 September 2024
- Happiness497830597840 contributionsA Tour Through Montreal's Jewish HeritageHaving made many Jewish friends whose ancestors lived in Montreal, we were interested in discovering more about the old Jewish neighborhoods of the city. We were thrilled to walk in the steps of Mile End and the Plateau and hear the narratives of Jewish life and culture in these areas. Our guide was remarkably knowledgeable, organized, charming and enthusiastic about the history of the area. She carried supplemental images to further illuminate her subject matter, and displayed a broad understanding of Montreal's Jewish heritage. The tour was well paced and the itinerary was generally easy to navigate in these flat areas of town. Highly recommended!Written 24 September 2024
- adgirl120 contributionsDelicious way to see the ‘hood’.Beyond the Bagel food tour. It was very informative, entertaining and delicious. Be really hungry and plan for lots of carbs on the tour. Our only thought would have been to try to find some other types of local Jewish foods -cabbage rolls, chopped liver, etc so not quite so carb heavy— and maybe half a bagel vs whole one at a stop—- but on the whole very well done and delicious.Written 21 September 2024
- Americanrolloff0 contributionsJewish history of MontrealAn interesting tour covering the history of Jewish immigration and Jewish life in early Montreal and how the community changes over time.Written 5 September 2024
- Miki K0 contributionsAn interesting aspect of Montreal lifeExcellent guide. Interesting walk with much Montreal Jewish history, although the neighborhood has changed. It also provided a glimpse of Montreal outside the tourist zone. And it ended near Fairmont bagels!Written 1 September 2024
- hanitg0 contributionsA Great Tour! 10/10My husband and I enjoyed our tour very much. Our guide Shannon was very knowledgable and sweet. She had lots of patience for everyone's questions, and she gave beautiful answers. We had a great time! 10/10 :) And, about an hour after the tour ended, we just happened to bump into her at a vegetarian place, and she was so nice. It was like meeting an old friend :)Written 30 August 2024
- Laurie D0 contributionsLearned a lot about immigration experiences.Excellent tour given by our knowledgeable and delightful guide Shannon. Sitting opportunities later on during the tour.Written 28 August 2024
- sambB5693KL0 contributionsBeyond Expectations - and we did in in the rain!Beyond the Bagel was beyond expectations. The leader was very knowledgeable about the subject matter and related topics about Jewish life in Montreal. She worked off a well-organized notebook, so even if you get someone other than Ella the key content can be presented. And the food was very good! If you don't eat beef, mention that in the registration allergy section so they can provide alternatives at the two delis. And they included a dairy item from a bakery between the deli visits, so if you are relatively strick in your kashrut you may want to hold that treat for later - the tour guide had bags for such needs and if you were too full to finish a treat!Written 26 August 2024

My husband and I really enjoyed the 90 minute "In the Shadow of the Mountain tour". Our guide Lara was very knowledgeable and personable. The pace of the tour was perfect: she provided lots of engaging anecdotes and information, but we still had ample time for questions and photos. It is a great way to explore a fascinating corner of Montreal. We look forward to trying other tours with this museum in the future.

An excellent panoramic tour of formative historical, cultural and literary Jewish influences in the Plateau neighborhood, featuring notable landmarks from late 19th and early 20th century Montreal. A rewarding afternoon, with a charming and knowledgeable guide.

Our guide, Maya, led us on an informative, well researched and thoughtfully planned tour. Presentation was clear and professional. The tour itself provides an interesting look at Ashkenazi immigration into Montreal. While the Jewish immigrant experience in North America finds commonality across geographic regions, it’s the local flavours, characters, and stories that make each wave of migration different. I recommend this tour for adults, teens and curious children as young as 10 or so.

Interesting tour and guide was knowledgeable and passionate about Jewish Montréal. Wish we had been able to introduce ourselves and play “Jewish Geography “ a bit to connect with others on the tour. It felt very impersonal and it didn’t need to be. Learning a bit about the current Jewish Montreal might have helped us connect, too. Adding info on current Jewish companies and involvement in local scene would paint a fuller picture.

What an excellent experience! Avery was our guide. She was so well informed, patient, flexible, and entertaining too. We walked a lot and got a wonderfully detailed sense of the “downtowners” and a slice of jewish Montreal history. Fascinating stories! Overlapping experiences! I loved how Avery gave us so many details as well as the bigger contexts (WWII, labor movements, crime in the city) and used maps and photos. I would give this 6 stars if possible! Attached photo — we saw this in the window of a shuttered storefront right after the tour ended — and we knew the whole context and backstory. Felt so informed!!!

My daughter and I loved our tour. We've been coming to Montreal for years and thought we knew Montreal Jewish history (my husband's family came to the city in the 1950s). We learned so much -- familiar streets and buildings now have added resonance for us. Our young tour guide was very knowledgable and engaging. We're looking forward to doing the tour of Mile End next time. Also: don't miss Fletcher's cafe in the museum building. The food is delicious and remarkably inexpensive for the quality!
