About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 237jerrieb0 contributionsGreat vegetarian tour with Enrique!I went on the vegan tour of Playa del Carmen yesterday with Enrique, what a nice way to spend the afternoon! I am vegetarian so he adjusted the plan a bit for that, which was appreciated. We visited a market and some nice little restaurants that I wouldn't have found on my own. The food was fantastic, I learned a lot about Mexican cuisine, and Enrique was really enthusiastic and fun. I give this tour five stars, highly recommended! Tip: Take this tour at the start of your trip because you will definitely want to return to these places for more great food.Written 11 February 2025
- A520ANsusanr0 contributionsYummy and Fun.Alex was the best. My daughter and I loved all of his food and drink choices. We enjoyed learning about the area from him. Whenever I travel I try to do a good tour at the beginning of the trip, this tour exceeded all of the others. The food from the tuna tostada to the ceviche was to die for. Do the seafood tour-you won’t regret it.Written 3 February 2025

- Nikki940860 contributionsDelicious Food Tour with Abbey in Playa del CarmenAbbey was amazing! We had such a great time on the tour and got to try many new Mexican dishes we had never heard of before. She was incredibly kind and patient, carefully accommodating all our dietary restrictions. Abbey also shared fascinating insights about typical Mexican dishes specific to the region, making the experience both delicious and educational. During the food tour, she gave us a brief but delightful glimpse of Playa del Carmen, which added an extra layer of charm to the experience. The selection of restaurants was excellent, and we never felt unsafe or encountered any hygiene concerns along the way. I highly recommend this food tour, even if you're not vegan. It's a fantastic way to discover hidden gems and popular dishes that may not be widely known.Written 1 January 2025

Enrique was also the greatest host and was so kind and knowledgeable about all thing vegan, local fauna and Playa Del Carmen. I suggest you do this at the beginning of your trip so that you can revisit all the local hidden gems during your trip. A local who grew up in the young city of Playa del Carmen. He knows all the great spots and holes-in-the-wall taco joints. Indy introduced us to the history of the area as well as great food. - V2310ZDchristiner0 contributionsAuthentic taste of MexicoWhere do I begin! We were greeted with cold hibiscus juice & had an opportunity to take a photo by Parque Los Fundadores before we started. Indra was a very informative, enthusiastic and kind tour guide. It was wonderful to walk around areas outside of 5th Avenue to see a more authentic Playa del Carmen and get a true taste of Mexico. By the end of the tour I couldn't eat another bite! We stopped at a market where I bought coffee and Indra kindly offered to keep it in his back pack until the end of the tour. I then forgot it and he RAN ALL THE WAY BACK TO 5th avenue to find us to return the coffee. It's a miracle he found us again! Bless him! My friend also has a nut allergy and he made sure everything was safe for her to eat. Highly recommended tour with a wonderful guideWritten 17 July 2024

Our guide, Indy, was amazing. Friendly, polite, knowledgeable. The tour was not a lot of walking, lots of stops at nearby food vendors. Indy provided detailed cultural and preparation history about the area and all foods. All of the food was DELICIOUS; handmade, fresh, natural ingredients. The tour was very considerate and initially provided fresh, cool drinks and another stop for drinks (non-alcoholic) about midway through. I can’t recommend this tour enough. I would recommend you try to book early in your trip as the guide also provided valuable insight for other activities in the area you may enjoy, plus walking around the area helps orient you to what’s around. They even added an extra stop to explore a cultural park area.

I thoroughly enjoyed my walking food tour with Marcel yesterday and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this to other foodies and anyone!
Marcel was very informative about each spot we went to and about the history of Playa and how it came to be, which was cool to learn.
Honestly think it’s really good value for money and your not being shorted anywhere. Plus it’s really good way to see a bit more of local Playa.
In total, about 7 spots comprised for food, drinks and fruit tasting. And we played a game between us I won’t spoil it.
I’m a chef, and can vouch for the food tasted yesterday especially as someone who can be quite particular about my foods.
Lastly, I think that fact it was a small intimate group really really works well.
Inspired for future menus I’ll be putting together.
Thank you Marcel!! I will definitely be back.

This is the second time I have done this tour, this time with two of my adult daughters. Our guide, Alejandro, was incredibly personable from our first introductions and spent time making sure that everyone in the group was comfortable before we started out, including providing refreshing beverages to keep us hydrated on a hot day.
As we walked through the town, Alejandro provided us with fascinating historical context for what we were seeing, including buildings, murals, and various food stands.
Alejandro also ensured that everyone knew what was in each of the major recipes in case there were hidden allergies.
The restaurant selection by the food tour company was spot on, and the food was, always, amazing.
I recommend this tour to all of my friends who travel this way and will recommend Alejandro as a guide if he is available.

We did this tour last year with a different guide and had a great time. Abbey was our tour guide this time, and she proved to be just as fantastic as our last guide. We visited some areas that we had before, along with new places. Abbey gave us new pieces of history about Playa del Carmen while providing us with well-chosen stops for local food. The servings were enough that by the time you were at the last stop you were full of food and good vibes! We would highly recommend this tour even if you're not a foodie because it will give you and your companions a chance to escape the tourist streets and spend some time in places the locals live, work, eat and shop.

I very much anticipated this food tour in Playa as I have attended various others on different holidays and had a lot of fun while enjoying local cuisines and customs. My friend and I joined up with our group and very much enjoyed meeting everyone before the tour began.. I loved hearing about a bit of Playa history through our guide Henry before we set off after being given a bottle of local hibiscus tea.
We enjoyed the most delicious mole I have ever had (we returned twice more to the same location for more of the same later on in our vacation). We saw an area known for street art and also stopped at a vegetable/fruit market. Unfortunately we were not given any fruit juices to try there as indicated in the itinerary. We enjoyed enchiladas that were a bit dry and not exceptionally flavorful, somewhat of a surprise as Mexican food is if anything usually full of flavor! It was at this location we were able to taste tamale that was very delicious.
We then went to two street taco stands to try different kinds of tacos. The food was great but there was really no place to sit down together as a group while we ate our food. The tour did end with a refreshing paleta/popsicle.
I kind of felt this tour could have been better planned in terms of food variety - say not so many tacos? I am convinced there is enough variety in Mexican food that repeating
an item is not really necessary. Perhaps add typical drinks like horchata and other agua fresca? There have to be places one can enjoy a good taco that also provide tables and chairs, something that I would have appreciated as this was a walking tour plus you then had to hope a stool might free up to eat your food at three of the five locations while juggling your soda or bottle of water. This would have also made it easier to visit with everyone. I appreciated receiving the photos taken on the tour by our guide.

My husband and I booked the 10am tour last Monday, April 18, 2022 in Playa del Carmen. We had the extreme pleasure of being matched with Victor.
Over the course of the next three hours, Victor guided us away from the hustle, bustle and hot mess that is Quinta Avenida. It was mind blowing that a few blocks away from the tourist traps so many amazing places exist.
Between food stops, Victor explained the different neighbourhoods and showed us some really cool things like street graffiti, the circles on the calles (Mayan street signs) and gave us some history of the areas we were walking through.
In between, we enjoyed:
Tamales de pollo
Quesadillas
Crickets!
Enchiladas con mole
Fresh fruit juice from a mercado
Tacos (your choice from the street cart)
Carnitas (OMG so good!!!)
Paleta (popsicle of your choice)
I would 100% recommend this tour and do it again. Would love to do the 5pm one next time. Thank you, Victor, for the amazing experience! The next time we’re in PDC we will be sure to book another tour.
Notes:
I made a very rookie mistake of eating breakfast earlier that day (around 7:30am), thinking we wouldn’t be getting that much to eat and I could handle it. So wrong. Don’t be me. I still enjoyed all the food but it would’ve been better on an empty stomach.
Although the walking distance doesn’t cover too far of a distance from the starting point, the heat makes it feel extra. Just something to consider. We walked at a comfortable place. Nothing was hurried or rushed.
You will get one juice to start (we got tamarind juice right at the beginning) but I’d advise bringing extra bottles of water. I had finished my tamarind juice between tasting #2-3.
The stop where you get the fresh juice at the market, I purchased two mangoes to bring back to the hotel for 10 pesos total. The produce there was so vibrant and incredible. If I had a shopping bag, I would’ve bought more.
Don’t start chowing down on your popsicle right away. I ripped mine out of the plastic wrap and held it by the wooden stick (like I normally would). No. The heat melts everything very quickly. I looked over at Victor and he was eating his upside down, stick up; popsicle still in the bag. He was like “I was going to tell you but you unwrapped it too fast” 🤣🤦🏻♀️
Bring some wipes.

Our tour with Enrique was an absolute delight! He whisked us away from the bustling tourist traps of Quinta Avenida and into the vibrant heart of local Playa del Carmen.
As we strolled through the charming streets, Enrique regaled us with fascinating tales of the area's history and culture. His passion for food and Mexican heritage was infectious, and we were thrilled to discover hidden gems that we would never have found on our own.
Enrique's preparedness was truly impressive. When a sudden downpour threatened to dampen our spirits, he was ready with Pancho's ponchos for everyone, ensuring we stayed dry and comfortable. This unexpected twist added an extra layer of adventure to our culinary journey.
We can't recommend this tour enough. It's the perfect way to experience the authentic flavors and culture of Playa del Carmen.

Victor was our guide, and he was on time, informative & fun! We made all the stops showed plus an additional one! He took us to places in Playa del Carmen that we would have never known existed. Walking through the less tourist traveled areas allowed us to see some amazing street art along with having some of the best food. We all agreed that the stop for the Chicken Mole was amazing and the central park with the food trucks was a great little area. We learned that the food truck in the central park area was open 24 hours so we came back for 6:30am breakfast the next day so we could get a jump on the day and would not have to sit down for a meal in a restaurant. It was the best decision ever and it was so great to start the day with fresh gorditas that kept us going until mid-day!

My wife and I met our tour guide Victor and were immediately greeted with a bottle of local water which looked disgusting but tasted great.
Victor took us to the first stop on the tour where we ate some delicious quesadillas, before he pulled out more treats from his bag like a Mexican Mary Poppins. This time it was some tasty tamales which were very filling, so we decided not to finish all of them.
Next on the tour was a small stop for some enchiladas. Victor was very knowledgeable about the area and about the food we were sampling, explaining the different ingredients and techniques in creating the dishes.
Victor then took us to a fruit and veg market where we bought some delicious fruit juice before taking us for the finest tacos we have ever eaten.
After that we were taken on to Juarez where we had Lebanese style tacos (where I also sampled the spiciest salsa known to man) before we had some very tasty popsicles for desert.
The beauty of this tour along with the incredible food we were eating was the conversations with Victor about Mexico and specifically the area of the Playa del Carmen. He was very insightful and explained a great deal about the history of the land as well as the street art. It was a superb tour with a great host and I highly recommend it if you are interested in the finest Mexican cuisine.

My husband and I did this tour in 2019 on our own and were excited to book it again this year when we came with our family (kids ages 4-16 and seniors in their 70s). Once again it was an excellent experience! With 7 stops around Playa Del Carmen that included everything from tacos to tamales to aqua fresca and much more, it was such a terrific opportunity for everyone to sample yummy food that is nothing like what is available on the resort. The highlight of course was the tour guide, Enrique. He was absolutely wonderful and so knowledgeable! We loved learning the history of the food we were eating. I especially liked learning about how mole sauce came to be. This tour is 100% worth booking. Don’t eat before you arrive. You’ll be SO full!!!!

I would personally double check on a map with your exact location, but a quick Google search claims about a 20 min. drive from Riviera Maya to Playa del Carmen.

I walk with a cane. Is the tour route on smooth walking surface or is it rough? How many food stops do you have? Is there any seafood/fish served? Is the food very spicy? What kind of beverages are provided?

If you walk with a can I seriously wouldn’t do this. It’s pretty long and on some uneven and cracked pavement. The food is mostly pork and chicken and the spice is added after, so you are in control of it.

Hello! I am a Food Tour owner from Gloucester, Massachusetts! My company is called Cape Ann Foodie Tours. I am here for the month of January and excited to come on your tour (probably in the next couple of days - waiting for a friend to arrive!) I'd love to chat with you! As a Food Tour owner, I totally agree that Food Tours are the best way to see/learn about a new area! If I can help you in any way, please let me know; I'd love to spread the word about your tour on my social media, etc!
My phone # is 781-548-9885 if you'd like to talk! Warm regards, Cindy

We'll have a baby and a stroller, how does it work with that?

I think just fine - it is a walk around town centre in a normal pace with lots to see. But if 4 hours works for a baby is another thing.
