Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- chloemS9217CE0 contributionsNot good.My dad and I went there as it was the tour guide highly recommended it and said it was the best tour in Mexico. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. The total was 300 us for two with a 40 dollar tax on top. We were misled and made to believe we could still snorkel after hurricane Helene- but there was no visibility. After a 1.5h drive and a 1.5 hour boat ride, we arrived at the island. The island was destroyed due to hurricane Helene so the museum was non functioning. My dad and I were afraid to eat the lunch because of how uncleanly the island was. The wildlife was cool but other than that it was an extremely long day. There was extremely loud Mexican music for ten straight hours- people were additionally vomiting from the boat ride. We then went to Isla mujures. If you are interested in vendors, this is the place for you. Since they can’t be found in the beaches of Cancun they can be found here. Pretty decent place with restaurants. The commute back was extremely lengthy. The whole day was about 10hrs. We felt like we were scammed and misled due to the actual condition of the island. Wouldn’t recommend.Written 15 October 2024
- gusw7930 contributionsReview of Our Family Visit to Isla ContoyVisiting Isla Contoy with my family was an extraordinary and peaceful escape into nature. Known as one of Mexico’s hidden gems, this tiny island is a protected national park, and we were excited to experience its untouched beauty and vibrant wildlife. Getting There We booked a boat tour from Cancun, and the journey to Isla Contoy was as enjoyable as the destination itself. The boat ride took about an hour, and along the way, we saw stunning turquoise waters and even spotted a few dolphins. The crew on our tour was friendly, providing snacks and interesting facts about the island and the surrounding sea. First Impressions When we arrived at Isla Contoy, it felt like we had entered a different world. The island is uninhabited and undeveloped, which gives it an incredibly pristine and tranquil atmosphere. The white sandy beaches, clear waters, and lush greenery created the perfect backdrop for a family day of exploring and relaxing. It was clear from the moment we stepped off the boat that this place is all about conservation and appreciating nature. Wildlife and Nature Exploration One of the highlights of Isla Contoy is the abundant wildlife. We started our day with a guided tour around the island, and the guide pointed out various bird species — Isla Contoy is famous for being a bird sanctuary. We saw pelicans, frigatebirds, and even a few flamingos. The kids loved watching the birds up close and learning about the ecosystem of the island. We also walked along the well-marked trails through the island’s mangroves, which gave us a chance to see more of the island’s flora and fauna. The landscape was stunning, and the variety of wildlife made the walk both educational and exciting for the whole family. Snorkeling and Beach Time The snorkeling experience around Isla Contoy was one of the most memorable parts of the trip. The shallow coral reefs just off the shore were teeming with colorful fish, and the clear waters made it easy to spot marine life. Our guide took us to the best spots, and we were lucky enough to see rays and sea turtles. For the kids, snorkeling in such vibrant waters was a real adventure, and the calm seas made it safe and fun for everyone. After snorkeling, we spent time relaxing on the beach. The soft white sand and the crystal-clear water were perfect for unwinding. Unlike many other tourist-heavy destinations, Isla Contoy’s beaches were peaceful and uncrowded, allowing us to fully enjoy the natural surroundings. Conservation Focus One thing that stood out during our visit was how well the island is preserved. Only a limited number of tourists are allowed to visit each day, and there are strict rules in place to protect the environment. This made us feel like we were contributing to the island's conservation efforts by respecting the guidelines, and it gave us a deeper appreciation for the importance of preserving such special places. Final Thoughts Visiting Isla Contoy with my family was an unforgettable experience. The island’s natural beauty, combined with the opportunity to explore wildlife in such an unspoiled environment, made it the perfect destination for a day of adventure and relaxation. It’s a great spot for families who want to connect with nature and experience a more peaceful side of the Mexican Caribbean. If you're planning a trip, I highly recommend booking in advance, as the limited number of visitors ensures the island stays pristine. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of curiosity because Isla Contoy is a place that will leave you and your family with lasting memories of a true island paradise.Written 13 October 2024
- Vikingsfan90 contributionsSwimming with Whale Sharks and Reef at the FaritoFantastic experience. Captain Angel was great finding the whale sharks and his mate Geovanny did a great job accompanying us in the water, directing, instructing and videotaping the entire experience. They deserve two thumbs up. I can't wait to go back with my kids and their spouses for them to enjoy the trip. Captain Angel also is a great ceviche chef. Then they took us to "El Farito" to do snorkeling in a shallow reef, which was amazing on its own. Kudos to the captain, crew and people in the shop.Written 19 September 2024
- saragH9661KN0 contributionsWhale sharks encounterI went hoping to be able to swim with the whale sharks and they did! not! disappoint! Javier (the guide) explained thoroughly how the experience was going to work and prepared us on what to do and not to do once in the water. Of course they can't guarantee that you'll see the whale sharks but thankfully with a bit of luck and the expertise of captain Joseph we were able to dive two times and it was truly amazing. The excursion concluded with lunch and then we sailed back, accompanied by the captain's playlist (great music taste). Would definitely do it again!Written 16 September 2024
- afoncho0 contributionsA ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE!!We had one of the best days of our lives! We had the opportunity to see: a school of dolphins, there were about 20!!, Manta rays!, sea turtles! and of course THE WHALE SHARK!!, not to mention that we snorkeled in the reef of Isla Contoy which was full of colorful fish and coral reef!! Thanks to the captain of the boat Isaac and his sailor Cindy!! who really made the day SPECTACULAR, their effort to find the whale shark, their interest in caring for the environment and the people who went on the tour is truly admirable. Contoy adventures!! the best company, the boat, the snorkeling equipment, it is worth mentioning that we were only 8 clients and 2 crew members!! no crowds! thanks for making that day unforgettable.Written 7 September 2024
- 944mahah0 contributionsGreat Conservation ExperienceI went with Miguel, Jesús, and Marco. They were great hosts and full of fascinating information! Poor Miguel even cleaned up when I had motion sickness. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone who cares about conservation!Written 1 September 2024

I think he has good luck. Only the day i join with him, wether n sea condition was best!Written 30 August 2024
- myrtlerosep0 contributionsBeautifulShout out to our guide, Ney, and Captain Omar! They found us a whale shark, even though it was the end of the season. Because there was only one shark, it was a bit crowded with other tourists. But we each got two swims. Ceviche at Isla Mujeres was icing on the cake!Written 30 August 2024
- D9402LAloiss0 contributionsThe Whale sharks are amazing but the Contoy Adventures was not.The whale sharks were amazing. I would give them a 5 out of 5. The Contoy tours company was a 1 out of 5. 1- They did not tell us we would not be able to snorkel the whole time with the whale sharks. It was very crowded and at least 15 other snorkeling boats there at the same time. 2- They promised a second snorkel location and we were left at a beach with NO snorkeling to wait for their other boats. 3- They said we did not need a life vest while snorkeling but when we got there they made us pay $30 for 2 very old wetsuits otherwise we had to were a safety vest. 4-When we got back we had to wait 2 hours to leave so all the different boats could see the photos they took. They were not available online and the viewing room was loud, overcrowded and disorganized. Some group's photos and videos were of good quality but ours were not. We had better photos with our phones.Written 28 August 2024
- clarem19880 contributionsA must doThis was one of the best experiences we have ever had. Our guide Matteo was brilliant and got us up close to the whale sharks. We had clear views and he recorded some incredible videos for us.Written 27 August 2024
- 377madhavm0 contributionsDisappointing dayThe tour looked so promising but our whole group was very disappointed. For some reason, they refused to pick us up from our hotel lobby and asked us to walk 25 minutes at 6 am to make it in time for our shared pickup. We had the same fight when we got dropped off at 8.45 pm. Left a bad taste. All other guests were picked up from their hotel lobby. The staff is nice - they kept the music on and energy up. The other thing that bothered us was that the Snorkeling portion of the trip was only 20 minutes. Thats it. It was a “guided tour” and we made one loop on the reef and came back to the boat. There was no time to explore independently. The reef was amazing and we wanted more time but not possible. Isla Contoy is a beautiful pristine island, but there is no where to go on it because it is a protected island. It’s a beautiful white sand beach without a reef so no snorkeling potential. But the team put together a really nice lunch. The 1 hour stop in isla mujeres feels very rushed. The boat tour started around 10 am and ended at 6pm. In the end we spent more time on the boat, and getting places. It just wasn’t for us.Written 26 August 2024
- 719anupap0 contributionsNot a Snorkeling tripIf you are staying at Bahia Principe - don’t choose this tour - they don’t pick up at the hotel. They pick up every other hotel but apparently not this one. And for what reason I don’t know. If you are expecting to snorkel - well that will be for about 20 minutes - totally rushed and without a moment to enjoy the beautiful reefs. There are too many people on the boat. More time spent traveling. The Isla Mujeres shopping is just a gimmick. This is NOT a snorkeling tour. At best it’s a taxi on the ocean. Saving grade is the beautiful blue ocean. That’s all.Written 26 August 2024
- heathercU4103ML0 contributionsAMAZING Whale shark swim!! (Book with Isaac and Sindy on Enki 2!)This was such a beautiful and incredible experience swimming with these incredible creatures! Isaac and Sindy on the Enki 2 were an amazing captain and guide! They were both very knowledgeable and made the trip so fun! Only bummer was the EXPENSIVE pictures and videos. Was a bit of a downer at the end of an amazing day. Other than that, it was AMAZING and would highly recommend!Written 24 August 2024
- MimiA340 contributionsBlowing mind experienceOnce in a lifetime experience. The whale shark is an AMAZING creature. The boat crew search for them all around til you see it and then you can go swim near them. A beautiful adventure. This incredible fish are close to Rivera Maya beaches only a few weeks a year, so if you have the rare opportunity to see them you should do it. If you like the ocean and underwater experiences, snorkel, scuba diving, you'll love this one. Its expensive. But it was worth it for us. We did with kids age 7 and 9, their minds blow!!Written 22 August 2024
- JessieR9330 contributionsA must do!Absolutely worth it. Swimming with these gentle giants has been my dream for years. Our Captain Gernan and guide Willy Wonka made this dream into a reality. They made sure everyone had a great experience. I had a hard time seeing the whale sharks on my second jump, so they allowed me to give it one more go, and it was amazing.Written 21 August 2024

Pick up time was changed by 10 minutes earlier which I Wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t send an email. It should be the tour company calling the passenger not the other way. The check in line at dock was chaotic with no explanation what to do.
The biggest issue is lack of safety or concern for passengers. The snorkel tour is very crowded and a large group is following one guide in very close proximity. Got hit by fellow snorkelers multiple times. The scariest was on my way back to the boat due to current I was floating away despite my trying to swim toward the stairs and instead of helping they kept saying hurry up. I kept waving but there was no response or help until my husband swam up and told the staff to send me a buoy. If i were In deep waters or person who panics easily, it would be very dangerous . There is only one snorkel stop and nothing is pointed out.
The guides and staff give minimal explanation in English and that too not complete information. For example at lunch we weren’t told that after we finished we could use the beach. They gave us a meeting time but they l were always late by 15-30 min at each pick up. There is a lot of alcohol but no non calories drink so if you don’t drink or consume sugar then get your own beverage.
It is not suitable for kids given the crew encourage passengers to give tons of deep kisses to their partners and Loud music and alcohol everywhere. If you want to only party maybe a good choice. If you want a communicative and caring staff with snorkeling experience look elsewhere. Not to mention when I declined to give a tip the crew was very puzzled as to why not. I thought tip was for service and not a mandatory think. Highly avoidable

Contoy Adventures is not recommended based on our experience.
We paid $444 for five adults and 1 kid to Snorkel and we did not!
They got us on the boat (not the best boat we could have reserved) and allowed everyone to get in without telling all the people that paid for snorkeling that we were not going to snorkel. We were just taken to Islas Mujeres, went to a buffet (very basic food, nothing extraordinary that would have cost may by $15 per person max) and back to the boat to head to Cancun.
If we would have taken the ferry it would have been only $25 round trip per person (a total of $150 for all of us) plus another $100 of great food at a great restaurant. Drinks on the boat were not good either. The crew was nice and tried to be funny. But definitely something I would not have paid $444
Also, once we got the the pier, they asked for an extra $20 per person for the 'right of the pier'. However, the bracelet we got said $150 Mexican pesos person. They took cash only, and would not accept credit card meaning they were keeping all the extras for the chargers they were asking.
Terrible experience, do not waste your money on this "tour".
Contoy not a company I recommend nor would I ever use again.

Dear Visitor,
So sad to read that your experience, was not as good as it usually is for almost 90% of our customers, this being said, we do not fully understand what you mention about the snorkeling, everybody over 12 years old and that have some swiming notion is alowed to swim, you just have to ask for your snorkeling gear.
Now, you paid an average of $74 USD + the 20 USD dock fee, you do not mention that this price includes the roundtrip transportation from any hotel in Cancun or Playa del Carmen, nor the fact that a continental breakfast is included at our Marina before boarding, plus the buffet lunch and an open bar during the whole tour, including water, soft drinks, beer and cocktails, and trust me, a meal in a restaurant at Isla Mujeres, will be at least $25 to $35 USD per person with one drink!
The $20 USD dock fee does not only pay for that bracelet, which is the federal fee for each dock we arrive at, but also for the snorkeling permit per person at the reef and a fee for protected areas.
If you ever come back to the area, we invite you to come with us again in perhaps one of our other adventures so you can maybe change your mind about us.
Best regards

This is what good excursions look like.
I was delighted to find an excursion that was wheelchair accessible AND provided hotel pickup and drop-off. (In excellent quality vehicles with good, safe drivers, by the way.)
The boat crew were knock-your-socks-off helpful to me as a polio survivor, helping me on and off the boat and moving my mobility scooter on and off the boat as well. The kindness and personal care I received was one of the most memorable of all our vacations.
Our group of six was all impressed with the sense of true hospitality of the crew, particularly in serving up drinks from the bar. (Sometimes you can get the sense they're doing that to drum up better tips. These guys were different; they seemed to truly LIKE people!)
It was amazing to have live sax music on the boat ride--very fun!
They offered an unadvertised opportunity ($12 USD) to get in the water with a shark and hold it for a picture. Those who took advantage of it got off the boat before the rest of us were taken to the dock for lunch. (I assume they were picked up after the rest of us disembarked.)
The excursion description promises 45 minutes of snorkeling in open water off the boat, but it was more like 25 minutes. Snorkel, mask and flotation device are provided, but not fins. It also describes another snorkeling opportunity at the beautiful Playa Norte, but instead we docked at downtown Isla Mujeres and were told to walk 8 minutes north to find the beach--which was Playa Centro. It was still a beach though! Nothing to see, so no second snorkeling spot. That was disappointing.
The buffet lunch was good food. Right next to it is a fish spa where my husband thoroughly enjoyed having fish nibble on the dead skin of his feet.
I want to shout out specifically to Ulises, who was a great host to the whole boat and particularly sensitive to me as a "special needs" guest.

I would give zero if I could. Worse experience ever. Was late to pick me up at hotel. You arrive at crowded docks and our yelled at then forced into a boat.
Let me break this down for you so you do t have to waste your money.
It is not unlimited snorkeling. You go aboard and there is music and lots of yelling. You go ten mins from the pier and everyone who is over a certain age like 14 or 16 (wasn’t super clear) is expected to swim like 600-800 yards in open water surrounded by hella boats and other people. You don’t get to actually see anything and then get yelled at the swim back to the boat. The guy Marco is not a good guide and maybe he was having a bad day because his attitude was so bad.
The one thing that was right was the open bar. You can have as much to drink as you want. Some people even had so much they puked in the bathroom.
Next you go to the crappiest buffet you will ever go to and eat gross food. Which they claim in the best in isla mujeres.
Next you go to playa del Norte and you get to jump off the boat and swim but if you ask for a snorkel during an unlimited snorkeling tour you get told absolutely not.
Last stop is downtown isla mujeres where they force you into their friend diamond shop where you are swarmed by high pressure sales people. Then you have to walk around for an hour.
Once back on the boat they have a lovely display of a dancing contest for women. That Javier said use to be a wet T-shirt contest until he got told to stop. He made disgusting comments about woman’s bodies and the for the men’s turn he had them do a beer drinking contest.
At last you think this is over and then you get a high pressure shake down for tips and then sent off the boat to find your own shuttle back and of course ours was late.

Dear Visitor,
First of all let us thank you for taking the time of writing this review, in Contoy Adventures we take all of our customer's opinions very seriously in order to get better day by day.
This been said, we are sad to know that you didn't enjoy our tour but we think it is very important to clarify some points: The reef snorkeling is indeed done in a certain area because of the currents, it is not safe to just snorkel around any part of a reef and we certainly will not put at risk any of our customer's safety, we have to be loud at the ocean and our guides have to raise their voice in order to be listened, we are sorry if you felt this was yelling. About the food this is not a deluxe all-inclusive food tour, in fact the buffet is done by locals who try their best cooking regional food, we are sorry this lunch did not reach your expectations but it is not common for us to have bad reviews on the food. We are also very sorry that you have to see someone threw up in the bathroom, this is a family tour and it is also not common, as you can read in all of our other reviews, to have people throwing up. Playa Norte is a place for snorkeling but, once again, if the wind conditions are not right we have to protect the safety of our customers, maybe this was one of those days. Javier has been with us for years and jokes a lot, he is a family man and if he talked about wet T-shirts it was as a joke, sorry you didn't have the humor to take jokes at this point but once again, I invite you to read all of our other comments on this particular tour to see that it is indeed a family-oriented tour.
We understand people having bad days and maybe this was one for you, we are sorry for that and we invite you to come again if you visit Cancun in the future, so we can take you in a special adventure, perhaps to Contoy Island instead of a noisy and crowded Island like you described Isla Mujeres, we are sure you will love the loneliness of Contoy.
Once again thank you for your review and hope you give us the chance to take you on another adventure!
Best regards

Contoy Adventures knows what they are doing. Everything is organized, and they clearly know how to handle crowds.
On the snorkeling— of course it is dependent on the weather! All the negative reviews clearly don’t understand that nature is nature and it’s for everyone’s safety. Be warned though—it’s not relaxing, you must be able to at least tread water (and then some) to follow the guide around the reef. You are going to be in the open water, corralled by a bouyed rope. Our guide, Marco, clearly loves his job and made sure we were all safe. The boat turned into a party shortly after our snorkeling. The drinks flowed, the music was fun, and I think your experience really depends on the energy of the passengers. We were all having a blast.
We had a second open swim before visiting the island, and LOTS more drinks. We didn’t get enough time to explore Isla Mujeres on golf carts, which I would have liked to do, but honestly it was too sunny and hot that my fiancé and I stayed pretty close to the meeting point. I was expecting a quiet snorkeling trip, what we got was an exciting experience followed by a spring break party boat and a lifetime of memories in one day.
We already had an amazing time on this vacation, and this was the highlight! The value with the food, drinks, safe and clear transitions between locations, and amazing staff are WELL ABOVE the cost of admission. Thank you to all the staff of Contoy, our lead guide Ulysses, and our snorkel guide Marco, for giving us the best experience of our trip. I will be talking to anyone who will listen about taking this tour when they visit Cancun. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A+++++

Trip was good on the whole... snorkeling part not great... hundreds of people snorkeling in the same area at the same time, so not much to see.
Was supposed to be going to a " secret part of the island"... but the beach was extremely busy, although it is very beautiful. The crew did their best to ensure you had a good time, getting you drinks when ever you wanted etc
Didn't know we had to pay an extra 600 pesos, dock fee, which took all our remaining currency.

Be aware that althought they say kids need yo be 6 years +, they will tell you that they cant do the main snorkling activity at the corals/statues. after some argumentation and taking full responsability they allowed me to take my daughter (she is 6 and a great swimmer)
she ended up doing everything but under a waiver, which is not desceibed on the website.. they also didnt care that I was bymyself w her on the water, like, you want to go, go by yourself...
The staff was nice, really did all to entertain and keep people engaged.
The open bar is obviousky alcohol oriented, and the food at the beach is just ok..
also, be aware therr is a port fee to be paid in cash by the port . its described but i missed it..
I think i had too much expectations of the snorkling places, we couldnt see much... dissappointed w yhe places we went to..

Our pick up driver jerry, the excursion guide, the boat crew and musician Robert were absolutely great, doing a great job professionaly with enthusiasm. They offered us a great experience.
The tour office was very helpful and really organised.
Unfortunately the food was average and the beach at the beach club dirty with bad sewage smell. The organizers should consider seriously to collaborate with an other beach club.
The second stop at downtown was worth it as gave us the apportunity to swin at a nice beach and explore the town!

We did a private tour to Isla Contoy. It was absolutely amazing!! We had the island to ourselves before the big groups showed up and it was magical. Raul was our captain and Carlos was our guide and they were fantastic. We live at the beach and eat fish all the time, but the fish that Carlos cooked us on the island was one of the most delicious I have had in my life! The reef he took us too was alive and awesome. I would highly recommend this company and HIGHLY recommend doing the private tour which was worth every penny.

The trip had a lot of positives, however, it was not what I paid for. The van picked us up promptly at 8 am. The van was very clean & good condition. The drive from Riviera Maya to Cancun was fine. The light breakfast was a piece of danish, yogurt, banana and juice/ coffee. The website said bottled water which means water served Delma bottle. You should bring your own bottles. While we don’t drink alot, the drinks are watered down. When we got on board they said we were doing one snorkeling stop, lunch Playa Norte Beach & downtown Isla Mujeres. I thought maybe I misread the website because I thought there were 2 snorkeling stops. It wasn’t until I got back at night that I realized I didn’t misread it and that the site did say 2 stops but there was only one. When we got to playa Norte it was a bit suspicious because they dock In the ocean and have you jump off for a 10 minute dance party and climb back into the boat.. so you don’t really go to the beach and you don’t get your snorkel stop in. Not a bad experience just not what I paid for.
