Brian, our tour guide was a delight and , of course, very knowledgeable. We never would have had this experience on our own.

Off the beaten path market and food tour
Wonderful tour of a market used by locals. Brian was the tour guide; he is friendly and knowledgeable and I had lots of fun with him. I had my first taste of chapulines.

      Original Oaxacan Market
We had to walk a long way from our meeting place to the market. I feel like they should have been more upfront about the long walk. Maybe have a different meeting place. The market was amazing. We really saw how the locals live. We were able to taste delicious Oaxacan food.

A Great Local Food Tour with Brian
We had a wonderful time exploring one of Oaxaca City’s biggest local markets with Brian. Unlike the more touristy spots, this market felt truly authentic, bustling with daily life and full of amazing food. Brian was a great guide—knowledgeable, easygoing, and clearly passionate about Oaxacan cuisine. He introduced us to a variety of local dishes, explaining their history and ingredients in a way that made the experience both interesting and enjoyable. From traditional tlayudas to rich mole and fresh memelas, everything we tried was delicious. What made the tour special was Brian’s connection to the market and its vendors. He navigated the space effortlessly, making us feel comfortable and welcome. It was a great way to experience the city through its food and culture. If you’re looking for a laid-back but insightful food tour in Oaxaca, Brian is a great choice.

      Good experience.
This tour was very immersive and at times a bit overwhelming but it is well worth doing. The market is a crazy labyrinth filled with people and different sights and smells. Our guide Brian was excellent and explained everything in an entertaining and clear way. You need a guide in this place or you may never find your way out!

The best, I would do this class again!
This is one of the best cooking classes we have been to in our travels. Fresh and interesting flavors without the use of spices, all natural ingredients and easy instructions. The food turned out great. The best mole and Quet (our instructor) gave us the recipe to try at home.

I loved it! My parents loved it! We would have never seen Oaxaca through the eyes of a local if it wasn’t for this tour guide.

A great way to move beyond tourist area to be immersed in Oaxacan culture
Just the right size group (<20) and an enthusiastic, knowledgeable guide made for a fun tour. The market is fun, jam-packed with sensory delights, with no overt attempts by guide to oversell products sampled, though if one wanted to purchase items this was quickly and efficiently handled. These two senior adults found the pace of the tour to be satisfactory though uneven walking surfaces kept us on the alert. Would recommend this tour to others.

      Superfun local food tour!
We were met promptly at a local eatery by Brian and taken through local markets which we never would’ve gone to without his help. He was passionate and fun to be with. A great way to spend the afternoon getting to know Oaxaca on an intimate level.

      Great experience
This was so fascinating and informative. We had a great time with the family we met, and the other couples. We had to take a taxi to the meeting place. Then, after a brief wait, we walked about a mile very fast-paced to the market. The guide was a bit soft-spoken so we missed a lot of what he was saying.

Such a fun, interesting class. Victor was warm, knowledgable, organized and a joy. He built a great rapport with and between the participants, told interesting and educational stories and had us, as a team, create a delicious mole and all the accompaniments.

Victor is the best Oaxaca cultural inheritor and teacher.
First, each participant was asked about the inedible ingredients. Then we went to the market together and bought ingredients and tortilla dough. Shopping was an amazing experience.
Back in the kitchen, we started cooking. Viktor explained it in detail, so we as participants functioned as a team. I made salsa, moret, rice, tortillas, quesadillas, etc.
I felt that all of the dishes were natural and had a deep flavor that I couldn't eat in a restaurant.
If you're interested in cooking Oaxaca, I'd definitely recommend you join us.
Thank you Viktor for the wonderful time.

This class was a delight! Our instructors Quetzalli, Liza and Talia were warm and welcoming, and shared so much of their wisdom about cooking traditional Oaxacan foods across four hours. We went for a market visit and then came back to learn how to make many different dishes that ultimately created a fantastic meal that we ate together at the end. The mole verde was incredible. I would highly recommend this experience for a unique and fun way to get to engage more with Oaxacan cuisine.

This was a classic bait and switch scam. We booked this class because it stated very clearly in two different places the maximum class size would be 4 people. Imagine my surprise when we were thrown into a class of 13.

Secondly, the class was to learn how to make mole. Well maybe one person in our class made some mole. We made
tlayudas, cassidias, salsas, tortillas, and one mole. Since the class was so big I never got to part of the mole experience.

The people in the class were great. Fun meeting so many travelers but that was not what the class advertized. If that is what I signed up for I would have been happy as a clam basted with mole. The head chef was gracious and knew what he was doing but his time was divided by 12 other people.

This was supposed to be a very small intimate experience focused on making mole. It was an experience, just not what was advertized.

    Shame on the promoters.

I understand your concerns and sincerely apologize that your experience did not meet your expectations. I want to address your concerns and provide you with a more comprehensive perspective on our mole cooking class. Firstly, I would like to clarify that our main goal is to ensure that each participant has a unique and meaningful experience. We recognize the importance of transparency in communicating about the class size, and as you mentioned, it is true that our classes can accommodate anywhere from one person up to a maximum of 12. This information is vital for participants to make an informed decision when signing up for our class. It is important to note that making mole is a complex and enriching process that goes beyond simply following a recipe. Our intention is to immerse participants in the rich culinary tradition of Oaxaca and teach them not only how to prepare mole but also other traditional dishes such as tlayudas, quesadillas, salsas, and tortillas. We understand that this diversity of preparations may be rewarding for some, but we acknowledge that others may have a more specific preference. We sincerely regret any lack of individual attention you may have experienced due to the class size. We recognize that intimate interaction with the chef is a fundamental part of the culinary experience, and we take your feedback seriously to improve in this aspect. We want to emphasize that all our chefs are highly trained and certified in Oaxacan cuisine, and we have dedicated time and effort to research and perfect over 47 varieties of mole. Each class is designed with love and dedication to offer an authentic and enriching experience. We understand that each individual has unique expectations, and we are committed to finding satisfactory solutions for every situation. We offer private classes with differentiated rates for those seeking a more exclusive and personalized experience. We sincerely appreciate your feedback and consider it an opportunity for growth and improvement. Through respect, understanding, and open communication, we seek to ensure that each participant leaves our class with a smile on their face and a renewed appreciation for the rich culinary culture of Oaxaca. Thank you for sharing your experience and allowing us to continue improving!

This was one of our best experiences and best meals in Oaxaca! Victor, our guide, was so informative about the food and also about its history as it related to the Oaxacan culture. It felt like we got three tours in one (Market, Mole and History) all while being fun and tasting AMAZING. I would recommend this experience to anyone visiting. 10/10

Excellent event. The guide took us to the market to purchase the ingredients that would serve us (at her expense). We prepare the green mole, quesadillas with natural cheese and cheese with habanero. We also made rice and tortillas, and passion fruit soda prepared by us with the directions of Quet, our guide.
    All delicious.

Didn’t care for trip to market other than trying the excellent cheese. Class was way too big - 16 people with one person trying to direct all of us. Food was ok. We did a different class with only 4 people that skipped the market and we cooked at someone’s house and it was so much better

    Really nice, well run class.

When it got to the cooking it was all very chill and relaxed. We were all cooking as a group so it's not like a class where you all have your own station and you do everything start to finish, so if you prefer that kind of thing then look elsewhere, but if you like being able to lean into some bits and take a break from others this is the class for you. We had a really great time and learnt a lot about how to cook this type of cuisine.

    Would definitely recommend.

Loved it. BUT, it was different than the description. We made 1 (easier) mole and several other dishes with a group. So I don't feel like I made a mole myself or understand the whole process now. All dishes were delicious and eating with the group was great. Would 100% recommend. But do realise that it might not be for you if you are only interested in mole.
