Incredible staff and experience! The company brings tarps to block out light so you can better see the luminescent organisms. They’re super funny and overall it was an incredible trip!

      Terrible experience
Yokahu personal at the start of the tour who explained the trip and provided instructions on how to do kayak is the only reason I am giving a 2 star rating. Other wise, my experience is terrible. We were almost hitting a yacht docked on the shore to start with. You cannot follow a path to the mangroves as the guides have no clue on how to guide the kayakers in a single line. Every kayaker will bump into each other and if you ask for help from the guide to put you back on track, they will be rude to you. Kayaking to the lagoon will be very tiresome due to water flow in opposite direction so we expect that you will get some relaxing time at the lagoon with your partner to enjoy the bio luminiscence and stars but these folks wont give you that time. In the lagoon, they will ask us to form a wheel spoke pattern with kayak while the guide explain the bio part and later put on a tarp for 2 or 3 mins to see the glow of bio but if you are sitting in front of the Kayak, you cannot be able to experience the glow due to the kayak pattern. My wife could not touch the water due to this pattern and I asked the guide to let us move the boat a bit back so that my wife can touch the water and enjoy the glow but he wont listen. So basically, you just do a roundtrip kayak for 2 hours with no stop to peacefully enjoy the bio as they will keep on pushing you to move. If you want to spend atleast 5 to 10 mins relaxing in the lagoon, dont consider this company.

      Best excursion you could purchase!
I cannot say enough about how absolutely worth it this trip excursion was! Long review upcoming, but that’s truly just how fantastic this was! Not only were the views amazing, but the crew were beyond accommodating! They handed us drinks while we were swimming at Flamenco Beach and helped people who didn’t feel comfortable swimming in deeper waters. They even fetched my friend’s sunglasses at the bottom of the ocean (thanks Jeffrey!) The lunch was pasta with olives, make your own sandwiches, chickpea salad, and assorted chips. The drinks were guava, passionfruit, iced tea, pina colada, and you could add Don Q rum to any or decide to go nonalcoholic or mix drinks! The snorkeling was gorgeous, and they had flotation tubes and flippers and snorkels that are throughly cleaned with soap and water. They kept an eye on us the whole time and whistled whenever anyone was in an area that wasn’t too safe. They played music and accepted requests. After we snorkeled, we went to Flamenco Beach and swam for two hours or so. They served snacks during the swim such as assorted fruits (pineapples, honeydew, cantaloupe, oranges and watermelon) and oatmeal cookies. After the swim, we headed back and decided to remain outside to feel relaxed. The waves weren’t too heavy, but for those who get motionsickness easily, they do sell dramamine at the shop where you check in. The shop also sells souvenirs and coffee! We personally bought our own, but feel free to do whatever you desire. At the end, we sang happy birthday to Adrien and another customer! So much fun and highly highly highly recommend! Thank you to Captain Daniel, Captain Javi, Canna, Adrien, Jeffrey, and Alanis!!!

A sweet ride to see water sparklers
Very relaxing and beautiful experience. Nature is really cool and calming. I saw white and my companion saw blue. Thoughtful bringing the tarps. There were jokes and music. A great time. I even started some dogs howling at the moon. A mini arm workout.

Honestly I'd probably rate it 4/5 but I feel I have to help make up for the jerks that put 1/5. I can see how the experience may not be enjoyable depending on the weather and conditions but that's not a 1/5 experience for the provider. That being said, we had a really great experience and I'm glad myself and my kids could see this natural wonder.
First of all I booked weeks ahead when I was coming on a cruise ship but then they adjusted the time to later due to sunset changes and I decided to cancel due to the risk of not arriving back to the ship on time. They were sympathetic and promptly refunded the money I had paid.
The cruise ship had the same excursion but I was too late to book it so I had resigned myself to not going to see the bio-bay when in a twist of fate, we arrived to San Juan three hours early. So I called Yokahu to see if we could join them. They had four slots left but could not arrange transportation with their usual providers. I scrambled and found my own (Michael Taxi Services) and the trip was on!
I'm glad we we were able to go at dusk because it's much more comfortable to go out in daylight and come back in the dark. Going both ways in the dark would be a little intimidating especially if conditions are windy, wavy like it was when we went. Before launching they provided a briefing, mosquito repellent, and then they took pictures of each kayak and off we went. Kayaking itself was fun. Once we got into the mangrove channel and bay there was no wind and waves and it was relatively easy to go. If you've never canoed or kayaked before it could be difficult but the guides were very helpful and, if needed, would pull kayakers that needed help.
Once it got dark we could see the bio-luminescence. No the bay doesn't glow but it's like pixie dust when you put your paddle in the water or run your fingers through it. A little bit like fireflies if you've seen those except the organisms in the water don't light up unless they've been disturbed. Very neat natural phenomenon. Impossible to photo with normal methods so the in-person natural experience and your memories will need to suffice.
As an added bonus, they don't make a pitch for tips like is often the case for trips like this and the photos they took are provided free of charge via their FB page.
I highly recommend this provider. As for the trip itself, keep an eye on the weather and moon cycle. It definitely would not be as good under a bright moon. And of course, cold or miserable weather would not be fun. If I were to do it again, I would definitely go with Yokahu.

I was very excited to show my 10 and 14 year olds one of the 5 bio-lumanescent bays in the world. We ran into a little snag when the company wrote to inform us that their transportation company went on holiday and we would have to organize our own transportation. They were very nice and professional and offered to refund our money if we wanted. But, as this is such a rare opportunity, I decided to make an effort to find transportation. Getting there in the day is not the problem. It is a remote place and if you do the later tour which ends at ~22:00, it isn’t easy to find a taxi to drive you an hour back to the San Juan area…at least not for a reasonable price. (In the end, we were so fortunate to meet up with Victor, a local taxi driver who picked us up promptly at the end and drove us back to San Juan for 20% less than anyone else charged! His number is +1 (787) 505-8807 in case you need transportation) But back to our actual experience… It was a bit eerie to paddle through the pitch dark mangrove swamp to get to the open bay. It was an exercise in trust in the tiny glow in the dark stick attached to the kayak in front of you! But it was also worth it to be there when it was a new moon and almost no extra light to take away from the glow of the dinoflagellates! Once we got to the bay, our guide gathered us round and shared some funny and interesting facts about this natural phenomenon. Although our arms were sore the next day, we were all so happy we could participate in this special adventure! We combined this tour with an afternoon snorkel tour on the Innovation (see separate review) which was a great way to maximize a tour from San Juan to the east side of the island!

This was a very enjoyable experience for those looking to kayak and see the bioluminescent lagoon. The hosts were great and knew their history about the area. After doing the earlier option, I would definitely recommend to do the later option just so you can fully experience the glowing planktons. But definitely be prepared because even for the earlier option, the way back is going to be very dark. If you are planning to come to this trip during the COVID-19 pandemic, please make sure you have a ride before and after your trip. Transportation is not provided by the company so if you are coming from San Juan area, please be be prepared to drive around an 1hr+ and spend ~$100 one way if you are getting a taxi or Uber unless you have a rental car or are staying at a hotel that offers transportation.

I’ll start this review with the positives. The bioluminescence is amazing and you can really see it! Obviously, this was our favorite part and a very unique experience. The guides were kind, helpful, and knowledgeable about the environment and history of the land. The kayaks and equipment were in good condition and pretty comfortable (although if you have back problems, sitting in any kayaks for two hours might be a little uncomfortable). Our trip up the canal was super easy and fun. It was still light out and the current was going with us so it was a piece of cake. The negatives are that overall I felt like the communication between the guides and the group could be a little better organized. After we checked in, we basically just waited around without much instruction. Someone started handing out the life vests without any announcement, and then we waited until 6:45 for the instructions for kayaking to begin even though our tour was for 6:30. I believe this gap was on purpose to set up the kayaks and get everyone checked in, etc. but there should have been better communication as to the timeline and specific details of how the tour would proceed. I also wished we had more time to enjoy the bioluminescence. We probably only saw it for 10ish minutes. Lastly, the trip back through the canal was very frustrating because it was super dark and we had to kayak single file but it was very stop and go and everyone kept piling up on each other. Some of the people in our group were clearly inexperienced and just ignored directions. I’m not sure if the guides could have been more clear communicating directions in this part or we needed more light or they just needed more guides to ensure everyone was doing the right thing. Besides the journey back, we did enjoy our trip. One last tip is that you most definitely will get wet so wear something that you will be comfortable getting wet in.

My fiancé has always wanted to see the bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico. We ended up having to change the day by one day and they were more than accommodating! Once there, the instructors were very knowledgeable and patient with everyone. When we entered the canal and got closer to the lagoon, the water below us began to light up with every stroke of the paddle! It was mesmerizing! I highly highly recommend them for your tour to see the bioluminescent algae. It’s something you don’t want to miss!!

The Bio Bay Kayak Tour with Yokahu Kayak Trips was absolutely incredible! Couldn't recommend this experience enough, especially for such a reasonable price. I went the day after the new moon, which was definitely the best time to go. Try to plan your trip on or the day before/after the new moon so there is the least amount of light in the sky when you go, which will mean you can see the bioluminescent organisms the best! I am a solo traveler and we had an odd number of people in our group (about 23) which meant I had a single kayak all to myself. Otherwise, you must be paired with someone else.

I went on the 8pm tour so that it was already completely dark from start to finish. First, we kayaked across the bay from our launch point and then into the mangrove-lined canal that leads to the lagoon. It's so beautiful and tranquil at night. By the time we got to the lagoon you could see the organisms in the water when you paddled. At the lagoon, our tour guide gave us an explanation about the lagoon, its history and its ecosystems, and of course the organisms we were seeing. It was absolutely breathtaking!! Then we paddled back to our starting part, back through the canal. Our tour guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and paddled along with us to make sure everyone was okay and could see where they were going and offer help if needed.

A few tips/notes for travelers: You do not need any kayaking experience to enjoy this trip, even though it would certainly be helpful. Be sure to dress appropriately and know that you WILL get wet from the waist down, and probably even on your whole body if it rains like it did on our trip. Wear a swimsuit underneath clothing that you don't mind getting soaked in. You will have a chance to leave behind your valuables (phones, wallets, etc.) at the meeting point, and you should, because you will definitely get wet.

This experience of bioluminescence is unlike anything I've seen elsewhere, made safe and enjoyable by a great tour operator. It was blowing and raining when we arrived at the launch site on the ocean on the east coast of Puerto Rico, and several tour companies canceled that evening. Our guides assured us that our kayaks were stable on the ocean and that as soon as we entered the canal on the way to the Grand Lagoon all would be calm, and that's exactly what happened. We're so glad they didn't cancel, because seeing the sparks and glow from these micro organisms is something not to be missed. The guides really added to the experience with their description of the biology we were seeing, by guiding us safely through the dark, and introducing us to George, a large iguana that sat on a branch observing our group of kayaks go by.

Paid $50 a person thinking we were going to have our own kayaks, nope they got you doubled up. That really tested some relationships. They tell you not to walk bare foot thinking there was like sharp objects to get to the kayaks I went and bought sandals (no need) there was a fancy bridge and soft sand to get into the kayak. I get it it's supposed to be dark but this is some crazy I can't see anything in front of me dark. Branches poking out.. almost getting stabbed in the face cause I didn't know my paddle partner was gonna huff it like she was on the German Crew team. We finally make it out of the mangrove canal into the lagoon. They line us up give us some bs information and try to talk up how amazing it is but why we can hardly see anything. They proceeded to put a wet musty tarp over us so that we can see the 10 little twinkled in the water. Like you really had to shake it up to see anything. There are other places in the world to see bioluminescence. Do yourself a favor and go there

The guides were great at their jobs and very friendly. The glowing water was beautiful, though I'd recommend going closer to a new moon if you can, as you'll see the glow more clearly. The water and snacks waiting on return were s nice touch!

We had a great time! Sunset, kayaking through mangroves listening to the night sounds, seeing the last light and then the planets and stars emerge, lovely! Then the bioluminescence we got to see before the moon rose. Then, as we paddled back, the moon burst through clouds on the treetops and lit our path back. It was a beautiful nights. The guides were professional, courteous, and kept everyone safe. It was very unique. I recommend it if you enjoy kayaking or just being on the water in a beautiful place.
