I’ll start this review with the positives. The bioluminescence is amazing and you can really see it! Obviously, this was our favorite part and a very unique experience. The guides were kind, helpful, and knowledgeable about the environment and history of the land. The kayaks and equipment were in good condition and pretty comfortable (although if you have back problems, sitting in any kayaks for two hours might be a little uncomfortable). Our trip up the canal was super easy and fun. It was still light out and the current was going with us so it was a piece of cake. The negatives are that overall I felt like the communication between the guides and the group could be a little better organized. After we checked in, we basically just waited around without much instruction. Someone started handing out the life vests without any announcement, and then we waited until 6:45 for the instructions for kayaking to begin even though our tour was for 6:30. I believe this gap was on purpose to set up the kayaks and get everyone checked in, etc. but there should have been better communication as to the timeline and specific details of how the tour would proceed. I also wished we had more time to enjoy the bioluminescence. We probably only saw it for 10ish minutes. Lastly, the trip back through the canal was very frustrating because it was super dark and we had to kayak single file but it was very stop and go and everyone kept piling up on each other. Some of the people in our group were clearly inexperienced and just ignored directions. I’m not sure if the guides could have been more clear communicating directions in this part or we needed more light or they just needed more guides to ensure everyone was doing the right thing. Besides the journey back, we did enjoy our trip. One last tip is that you most definitely will get wet so wear something that you will be comfortable getting wet in.

Our guides were very knowledgeable and caring, making sure everyone had a good time. They were incredibly responsive, like when another kayak flipped, they were right there to help them. They took the time to point out different animals we saw in the mangroves and shared information about the bio bay and its history, which enhanced the trip.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much bioluminescence was visible after hearing that the brightness has faded over the years due to fertilizer and other pollution in the water. It was enchanting to run our hands through the water and see everything just sparkle!

While in the bay the guides tied up our 8 or so kayaks so we could get under dark tarps and really take in the glow. This was really cool to see as it highlighted the bioluminescence, but because we were all tied together it was a little hard to get our hands in the water to stir up the organisms since they would get squished between the other kayaks.

We signed up for an 8:00 PM tour, but the guides wouldn’t check us in until after 8:00 and we didn’t leave until after 8:30.

We paddled a total of about 2.4 miles and the excursion lasted about two hours. Of note, it’s best to go when it is very dark out.

Overall I would recommend this tour!! It is priced right for all it has to offer!!

I was very excited to show my 10 and 14 year olds one of the 5 bio-lumanescent bays in the world. We ran into a little snag when the company wrote to inform us that their transportation company went on holiday and we would have to organize our own transportation. They were very nice and professional and offered to refund our money if we wanted. But, as this is such a rare opportunity, I decided to make an effort to find transportation. Getting there in the day is not the problem. It is a remote place and if you do the later tour which ends at ~22:00, it isn’t easy to find a taxi to drive you an hour back to the San Juan area…at least not for a reasonable price. (In the end, we were so fortunate to meet up with Victor, a local taxi driver who picked us up promptly at the end and drove us back to San Juan for 20% less than anyone else charged! His number is +1 (787) 505-8807 in case you need transportation) But back to our actual experience… It was a bit eerie to paddle through the pitch dark mangrove swamp to get to the open bay. It was an exercise in trust in the tiny glow in the dark stick attached to the kayak in front of you! But it was also worth it to be there when it was a new moon and almost no extra light to take away from the glow of the dinoflagellates! Once we got to the bay, our guide gathered us round and shared some funny and interesting facts about this natural phenomenon. Although our arms were sore the next day, we were all so happy we could participate in this special adventure! We combined this tour with an afternoon snorkel tour on the Innovation (see separate review) which was a great way to maximize a tour from San Juan to the east side of the island!

We had an excellent experience on our tour and highly recommend them. Our experience started with the call to book the tour (the same day). The woman answering the phone was very friendly and did a great job answering my questions. She made sure we knew we would need transport arranged back to our hotel in advance, because it can be difficult to get a taxi/Uber from Fajardo at that time of night after the tour, so we were able to make arrangements beforehand, which we may not have thought to do otherwise.

I had Omar as our lead tour guide and we also spent some time talking to David as well–the whole tour was very well run. We were somewhat experienced kayakers, but there were plenty of beginners and we could see the guides gently helping them get through the mangrove forest when they had trouble. Omar gave a very informative talk when we got to the bio-bay, and we were left to explore on our own for a while.

The bio-bay was very cool to see, but my wife and I honestly enjoyed the paddle through the mangrove forest just as much, if not more. It was a lot of fun in the dark!

We went on the 7:15 tour on the night of a new moon, and I would recommend doing the later tour if you have the opportunity. The paddle over in the dark is great.

The tour was gorgeous and the bio bay was stunning. We've seen plenty of poor reviews about the effect of the bio bay, but honestly that seems to be a reflection of many tourists unrealistic expectations. If you expect to touch the water and be transported to a scene from Frozen, then yes you'll be dissatisfied. But if the idea of shaking your hand in the water and seeing blueish sparkles light up around it is as magical to you as it is to me, then it'll be a blast. Only downside of the trip was in the dark inexperienced kayakers were a bit of a challenge, both in our tour and in others we passed. But our tour guide was very adept at herding chickens and cleared up any traffic jams efficiently. All in all, a fantastic experience, one I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone interested in seeing something spectacular and enjoying the outdoors!

The Bio Bay Kayak Tour with Yokahu Kayak Trips was absolutely incredible! Couldn't recommend this experience enough, especially for such a reasonable price. I went the day after the new moon, which was definitely the best time to go. Try to plan your trip on or the day before/after the new moon so there is the least amount of light in the sky when you go, which will mean you can see the bioluminescent organisms the best! I am a solo traveler and we had an odd number of people in our group (about 23) which meant I had a single kayak all to myself. Otherwise, you must be paired with someone else.

I went on the 8pm tour so that it was already completely dark from start to finish. First, we kayaked across the bay from our launch point and then into the mangrove-lined canal that leads to the lagoon. It's so beautiful and tranquil at night. By the time we got to the lagoon you could see the organisms in the water when you paddled. At the lagoon, our tour guide gave us an explanation about the lagoon, its history and its ecosystems, and of course the organisms we were seeing. It was absolutely breathtaking!! Then we paddled back to our starting part, back through the canal. Our tour guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and paddled along with us to make sure everyone was okay and could see where they were going and offer help if needed.

A few tips/notes for travelers: You do not need any kayaking experience to enjoy this trip, even though it would certainly be helpful. Be sure to dress appropriately and know that you WILL get wet from the waist down, and probably even on your whole body if it rains like it did on our trip. Wear a swimsuit underneath clothing that you don't mind getting soaked in. You will have a chance to leave behind your valuables (phones, wallets, etc.) at the meeting point, and you should, because you will definitely get wet.

Paid $50 a person thinking we were going to have our own kayaks, nope they got you doubled up. That really tested some relationships. They tell you not to walk bare foot thinking there was like sharp objects to get to the kayaks I went and bought sandals (no need) there was a fancy bridge and soft sand to get into the kayak. I get it it's supposed to be dark but this is some crazy I can't see anything in front of me dark. Branches poking out.. almost getting stabbed in the face cause I didn't know my paddle partner was gonna huff it like she was on the German Crew team. We finally make it out of the mangrove canal into the lagoon. They line us up give us some bs information and try to talk up how amazing it is but why we can hardly see anything. They proceeded to put a wet musty tarp over us so that we can see the 10 little twinkled in the water. Like you really had to shake it up to see anything. There are other places in the world to see bioluminescence. Do yourself a favor and go there

Hola Anita, We would like to have this fancy bridge. I believe you are confusing your tour operator. Please double-check the name of the company in your email confirmation. This fancy bridge is the other direction our competitor's tours depart.

Not worth it. Way too many tour groups with way too many people per tour group. Including this one. They turn no one down. You can not. I repeat. Can not see the lights in the bay without them telling you to put a tarp over your head. The light pollution from the nearby building destroys it on a NEW MOON. This might be worth $20 a person..not $50. Go elsewhere to see these lights. Also, to the tour guides, when you have that many people on kayaks? We can only hear 1/3 of your presentation because you are moving your head around to cover all the kayakers in your group. This is a money grab folks. Light pollution spoils this for ANY TOUR on this bay.

We started out thinking this was going to be a lot of fun. Paddling the kayak was easy and I think we went about a mile and a half to the lagoon. The people leading us were very knowledgeable. They take a picture of you as you start off and apparently it will be available for free on their Facebook page in a few days. The only problem we had was once we got to the lagoon there was a full moon. The guides said that it was too bright to see the bioluminescence. At that point they brought out a huge and I mean huge tarp and had us cover for kayaks with it so that we would be in the dark. The tarp was wet and heavy. We were in the first kayak and the people kept pulling the tarp to get it over them so we will be in and out of the tarp. we certainly expected a lot more. Every once in a while you would see a white sparkle we couldn’t tell if it was moonlight hitting the drops of water or what we are supposed to actually see. Plus we thought they were big colors. We had talk to other people who said they saw green and blue we certainly did not see that. We laughed and had a good time but I’m not sure I would do this again. Maybe add another location like the Bahamas.

Great experience with Yokahu Kayak Trips, very large group but well organized and guides always kept an eye on all participants. Good explanation and instructions before the tour and good communication during. Guides provided historical and scientific facts which adds to the experience. The bioluminescence is beautiful, we could see it clearly, you can touch the water and see it in your hands afterwards. This tour requires some level of fitness, they will not challenge you and will explain kayak operation, but the rest is up to you. Overall a great experience.
