My husband and I always try to do a food walking tour of every city we visit because it immerses us in the local culture & provides us with interesting fun facts & tips for the rest of our holiday. Nathan was our host for the evening & he did not fail to deliver. He explained the Shinjuku nightlife & ‘coming of age’ celebrations we would lay witness to and navigated our reasonably large group through the bright vibrant streets & back alleys that bestowed upon us all sorts of wonderful culinary delights including our favorite (on the night), Gyozo. Admittedly I would never have tried tofu ice cream but the tour ended at an establishment known for its maccha & tofu ice cream (surprisingly delicious). We also enjoyed the trip down ‘memory lane’ & small intimate hospitality of the Izakaya (Japanese style bar) where it was pretty hard to pass on the plum wine :) Thank you Nathan for passing on all your local knowledge & good humor, we had a lovely evening & will highly recommend this tour to all family & friends.

I can highly recommend the Izakaya Food Tour in Shinjuku with Ninja Food Tours.
Amanda was fantastic and ran a great tour, with wonderful food, at venues you probably wouldn't go to, if you were not in the know.
Having a guide that could take control and speak fluent Japanese when ordering, was a real benefit. Added to this her knowledge of Japanese culture, made learning very easy and the night a real enjoyment.
My family, including my wife, 14yo and 17yo sons and I, did the tour and we all loved it.
There was plenty of food on offer with an accompanying drink at all venues and you get to try many different types of Japanese cuisine.
Added to the great food, is a tour of some of the streets of Shinjuku, while learning some history of the area.
Ask questions because they are more than happy to chat while eating and touring and are very knowledgable.
You will not regret booking this tour while visiting Tokyo. It was our first visit to the city and the tour was a great way to see and eat like a local.
Booking via their website was easy and we had good communication via email and phone as needed.

My partner and I did a private Shinjuku food tour with Amanda and it was an absolutely amazing experience. My partner has some tricky dietary requirements and Amanda accommodated them completely. Amanda was the perfect guide - her knowledge of the local food scene was excellent and she answered all the questions we had. She took us to places we would never have found on our own. I can highly recommend Ninja Food Tours to anyone looking for an authentic food experience in this amazing and vibrant city. Thank you Amanda and Ninja Food Tours - you made our first night in Tokyo definitely memorable.

I would really recommend this tour if you are adventurous and a true "foodie" ( I am not a huge fan of that term but there you go). Also, go hungry! you will need your appetite as there is plenty to go around. Great explanation with our guide, Giulia, she had a great knowledge of the local gastronomy and was born faced by the million questions on local customs. Great to be in such international company too, our group was comprised of Canadians, Australians, Brits and Norwegians. All very keen on tasting new foods and not faced by unusual ingredients (chicken heart, chicken tail, crab brain etc...) I know it sounds daunting to some but go for it, all dishes were just wonderful all the same. we finish the evening with a quick walk around the red light district and a little bar area called Golden Gai. I would not have found this by myself so again the local knowledge came in so handy.

I am so glad I signed up for the Izakaya Food Tour as it was the highlight of my trip to Japan. I attended as a solo business traveler and joined 3 couples along with tour guide Giulia. Giulia is quite possibly the perfect tour guide - fluent in Japanese but able to offer cultural/historical information and perspective for a Western audience (she is Italian). The pace of the tour was excellent as we had plenty of time (and food) at each stop but still covered a wide swath of Shinjuku. We explored areas that I never would have known about without Giulia's help, making it the most fun and productive 3.5 hours of my time in Tokyo. Giulia was able to answer every question we had about the food and neighborhoods, as well as other random questions about life in Japan. I also very much appreciated her ability to accommodate me as a lazy vegetarian. My only regret is that I didn't have time for more Ninja Food Tours while I was there.

Yuma was an excellent guide that took us through the city describing the culture and history of the places we toured while sampling food, “hoppy” beer, and sake. He was great at catering to more adventurous eaters while also having plenty of options for more moderate tastes. Highly, highly recommend this tour. Great value for the amount you eat and drink, and he even followed up with an email listing other excellent places to try no matter where you are traveling around Japan. Excellent tour!

I had such a good time with Ai on this Izakaya food tour! We had a great group of foodies and we got to feast on traditional small plates (okonomiyaki, yakitori, takoyaki and gyoza) at places in Shinjuku I would have never noticed or discovered on my own. Ai was a great guide - friendly, spoke perfect English and super knowledgable. Highly recommend this tour if you're a tourist and don't know any locals who can take you on a great Izakaya experience.

While visiting Tokyo in December, we had the luck to be the only 2 participants in the Izakaya food tour. Kaz was an amazing guide, he enjoys giving the tour which makes it enjoyable to listen to him. He took us to very nice places and told a lot about Tokyo in general. His English is very good, which is not a given thing in Japan in general. I would really recommend the tour, and I would maybe also think about booking a private tour since I think this makes the experience even better! Kaz, thank you very much and good luck with the rest of your tours! Bye, Adriaan and Julia

My husband and I joined a group of family and friends on the second day of our honeymoon trip to explore Shinjuku and try out some amazing local Izakaya restaurants! Taiga was equally amazing and explained the drinks, cuisine, and cultural history with efficiency and a great sense of humor. He helped out different members of our tour group with ordering food because of diet restrictions and gave fantastic recommendations for additions to our trip itinerary. Thank you!

Went on the izakaya food tour last night and highly recommend! Our tour guide Taiga was fun and knowledgeable and showed us around the neighborhood as well as introducing us to the food and history. We got to try a wide variety of dishes, from tonkatsu to okonomiyaki to sashimi to dumplings, across 4 stops over 3.5 hours, 3 of which were proper sit-down experiences complete with an alcoholic beverage of your choice, from uncomplicated beer to more unique local drinks and sake. The food was all excellent and abundant—if you are still hungry by the time you end this tour, you are clearly too picky for this type of experience!! I paced myself and was still stuffed by the time we arrived at the last stop.
I highly recommend this tour for English-speaking solo travelers (like myself!) who are new to Tokyo. Besides the variety of delicious local food you’ll try, it is a great way to meet other visitors and have a more fun evening out than you might otherwise have by yourself. Of course it would be fun to do as a couple as well—there were a couple of couples on our tour—but as a solo traveler I found it an especially nice way to avoid that boring and slightly embarrassing experience of dining alone, with the huge added benefit of having a local introduce you to great places to eat and great dishes to try there in a city where English is relatively uncommon and it can be tricky to know where to go and what and how to order.
Overall, this was my favorite activity of my visit to Tokyo so far, and considering the amount of food and drink and the total experience, I think it’s a great value.

Hello! We were really hoping to do this tour on Saturday 26th of October! I see there is only one spot left but there are 2 of us. Is it something you could do for us please?
Written 5 October 2024
You may want to email the company to ask them about this. I did this tour a few months ago and it was awesome! But one of the things that makes it awesome is that it's a small group and you go to very small places that don't have a lot of space. So if there is only one spot left, they may not be able to fit two people.

Hello are the izakaya that you visit smoke free ?
Written 13 October 2019
No, there are rarely any eatery in Japan that is smoke free.
They may have a smoking area, which means a table next to yours where the smokers will be. Be prepared to be surrounded by smokers in any case
