- stevenmA8251LN0 contributionsExceeded all expectations! What a wonderful place, which totally exceeded our expectations. Booked this to kill some time on a quiet day but as soon as we walked through the door from the entrance to the sanctuary we were mesmerized. Amazing birds that are in touching distance, the sound is amazing and what I thought was a quick walk round turned in to about 2hrs of wandering, searching, staring in amazement. We took binoculars which was a bonus so if you have some, take them. A really lovely couple of hours that was more than we anticipated.Written 14 August 2024
- 901thinusv0 contributionsA Must to seeExcellent place to visit with such a variety of our feather friends! Beautiful and calming experience. Not only for kids, but for everyone no matter your age!Written 28 July 2024
- CelticChick520 contributionsMonkeys, Monkeys Everywhere!!This was SO much fun! The monkeys were everywhere. You walk around with a guide and he's good at finding monkeys and talking about them. A staff member brought out a bucket of nuts and monkeys erupted from the trees and shrubs! They came from every angle, it was so cool. They surrounded us, but all they wanted was food. We saw seven or eight different species, including the elusive gibbons! It was a fabulous experience. Note: Do apply the bug cream they offer, I didn't and had six bites on my ankles within minutes! Went back, applied and all was good! lolWritten 7 May 2024
- colindup0 contributionsPoor expercienceNot a good experience at all. My (expensive) prescription glasses were taken from my face by a vervet within 5mins of starting the tour. Yes, we were warned before starting that the monkeys do snatch stuff. But thought it one would see them come and then have an opportunity to hide your items. Going without my glasses caused major issues for me the remainder of the holiday. Perhaps Monkeyland must make the warnings more explicit and issue straps for glasses? We were also bitten severely by mosquitoes. We will not ever return again.Written 26 December 2023
- Road510193140320 contributionsA highly recommend place to visitThis is a great place to visit where the tours are guided. Much useful information is learned from the expert guide, and there are many species of monkeys/apes to be easily seen in a natural environment. We bought a combined Bird/monkey ticket, which proved very worthwhile.Written 4 October 2023
- Road510193140320 contributionsA highly recommended excursionThis is a great place to visit if you have two or three hours to spare, although you could go through in a short period of time. There are some amazing birds which are all easily visible and an incredible variety with some of the most beautiful colours imaginable. The environment is extremely natural, and although it is a very, very large enclosure – there is no sense that it is artificial or contrived. All birds have been rescued and the ethos has to be commended. A very well worthwhile excursion.Written 4 October 2023
- 138adeg0 contributionsIn with the monkeys - well worth a visit - combine with Birds of EdenCombined with Birds of Eden which is right next door and Jukani Cat sanctuary and got a good deal on tickets. This is an excellent attraction, the first thing that strikes you is that you are guided into the forest and the monkeys and you are literally in with the monkeys. First thing we had to do was avoid a troop of monkeys doing their business on us from the treetops! Guided through the paths in a group, guide points out monkeys and gives information - no sense of being hurried at all. Only let down was our group consisted with some very unruly kids whose parents didn't seem to care that they were running wild. Be nice if they ran grumpy old bloke only tours!. Highlight was when crossing a rope bridge a gibbon climbed on the bridge and proceeded to swing right over our heads as we ducked down - well worth a visit.Written 23 April 2023
- JCherts0 contributionsCheeky MonkeysThe monkeys literally own this place. And you really felt like you were on their turf! And being watched. Mostly unwanted pets rehabilitated into a semi wild situation. Our guide Benny was a mine of info. But be careful of your hats, sunglasses or phones, these cheeky monkeys are fast and opportunistic. Even the babies are “thieves in the making” to quote Benny.Written 7 April 2023
- Jayden D0 contributionsBeautiful and peacefulThe forest is absolutely beautiful and so are the birds. You need to walk slowly and take your time look everywhere because some birds hide. There are birds that come right up to you and sing and make noises.Written 14 February 2023
- 489stuartr0 contributionsMonkey/BirdworldFabulous day out a trip to Monkey World first then Bird World . Both were excellent, really enjoyable. Ideal for families to see monkeys roaming about all close too . Then with the birds which were so colourful and seem to pose for picturesWritten 6 February 2023
- 394paulas0 contributionsJust fabulousThis was a wonderful guided experience and a real opportunity to get up close and personal to a number of different monkey varieties. Just amazing to walk amongst the monkeys and observe their cheeky behaviour. A real treat not to be missed.Written 29 September 2022
- NICOE2T0 contributionsAn amazing Sanctuary allows an amazing adventureYou are really walking with your guide (available in German as well) directly amongst the monkeys. There are all different types of monkeys to be seen.Written 24 August 2022
- BAwesome10 contributionsSO FUN!This was so fun. It was like being in an actual jungle. There were monkeys walking around in the open. There was a tour guide that told us fun facts about the monkeys and how they live.Written 22 July 2022
- 269andreh0 contributionsClose encounters with Lemurs & other monkeysOne is taken on a guided tour through the sanctuary which lasts for about 45mins. There are feeding stations throughout so you guaranteed of seeing most of the monkeys/lemurs. Most are habituated so pose for pics & generally don't run away . The tour is quite informative providing information about what monkeys feed on , where they come from & general habits. The setting is very peaceful but some monkeys make quite a noise when hey sense any predators , mainly birds. Close to Birds of Eden , 200m , where you do a self guided tour. There is also a restaurant on site . It is worth taking the combo ticket where one can visit Jukani/Monkeyland/Birds of Eden on different days if you so wishWritten 28 February 2022
- Bert K0 contributionsTo learn something about MonkeysYou want to learn something about Monkeys: go here. A lot of different species and a ranger who can tell you everything about it. Try to be there around feeding time, 3-4 pm.Written 7 February 2022

I expected coming to Monkeyland to see monkeys in a zoo type of environment albeit a very large enclosure. This was much better. The monkey sanctuary is in an area of multiple acres. After you pay you are taken by a guide through the enclosure which is so large you really feel you are in the monkey’s native environment. The monkeys are everywhere so you will be presented with many photo opportunities. Because the enclosure encompasses a ravine, a suspension bridge has been built that during your 1 hour guided tour you will walk over so you are above the trees and can get a Birds Eye view of monkeys. When the guide finished with us I felt I had been on a safari. A visit here would be a joy for children. If you come, make sure you visit the bird sanctuary next door which is also top-notch. When you buy tickets for either attraction they will ask you if you are doing only the one attraction or both.

Supporting wildlife sanctuaries can be a bit of a guessing game in South Africa. Some reserves claim to be sanctuaries but allow touching and petting and feeding or purchase animals who should remain in the wild.
Monkeyland is a true sanctuary. It is part of SASSA - a local sanctuaries alliance and endorsed by WildChoices (WildChoices is a non-profit company dedicated to improving the state of the captive wildlife tourism industry).
Monkeyland provides a home for primates which were rescued from zoos, labs, circuses or were unwanted pets. Monkeyland is a world leading refuge and the lemurs, monkeys and apes here roam freely.
There are awesome opportunities to learn about primate behaviour from the guides, take photos or videos or just watch the animals grooming, feeding and swinging.
Our kids are 5 and 8 and they loved every minute of this tour.
Warning - please listen carefully to the guides, they advise visitors to put away sunshades and if you ignore them your property is likely to get pinched by some of the clever animals.
We loved seeing the White Handed Gibbons and the lanky Black Spider Monkey.
Please consider the purchase of a square metre of the Forest on behalf of the monkeys. The goal is that they will eventually own their own home!

We arrived at the very end of the day and made it to a tour at 4:45. The place itself is beautiful and there were so many monkeys you really saw them roaming around everywhere. I would recommend but only at an earlier time as the tour felt a bit rushed, the guide didnt talk that much with us and it only lasted 30 min instead of 45-1h.

It was the only day of a 15-day trip that it rained. We know that the weather is something we definitely cannot control and is part of the risk of any trip. However, the establishment could have been much more elegant, telling us that in those conditions the animals hide and we would see few. We would have been better able to decide. Our guide was ironic several times, he was addressing a group closest to him and he was not friendly at ANY time. Even on our way out, we met another guide who was extremely cold and unfriendly. The place is beautiful, the experience with the people was not.

I loved the time we spent in Monkeyland and would highly recommend it. There are so many monkeys and you can get so close to them without touching and invading their space too much. It was so entertaining and I didn’t stop smiling the whole time.
We didn’t have issues with mosquitos after putting on the cream offered at the start point. Our guide was nice and informative too. There were so many lemurs which I loved too.
All in all I would recommend this to anyone it was a great experience you’ll travel far to find again elsewhere.

What a great place to visit. Your entrance fee of GBP£16 provides a guided 1 hour tour of the sanctuary where loads of monkeys have free reign. You walk through the forest feet away from monkeys on the footpath and in the trees. Gibbons, Howlers and plenty of Lemurs to take pictures of. Great place for kids to learn about wildlife in a "real" world environment.

We visited Monkeyland and Birds of Eden on the same ticket following advice from one of the local folks. We would recommend doing both as a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. The tour with the monkeys takes an hour and the guide is very knowledgeable. It’s like a mini safari going through the forest to try to spot the 9 different species here. The lemurs are everywhere - they were our favourites. After, we walked across to the Birds of Eden. Here is another forest, waterfalls and ponds with different beautiful birds and even several small deer. If you love photography, you’ll enjoy both activities.

I was a little sceptical about the premise and the price, but the setting is great, with loads of forest for the monkeys to live in and it really is up to them if they want to be seen. The guide was knowledgeable and it was a great ramble through the woods. We were lucky to be just two of us on the tour, and that maybe enhanced our experience but there it is. Great place and good to see rescued animals getting something as close to natural as isa safe for them

This was a great outdoor adventure to learn and be close with different monkeys. We went during their feeding time so it was very fruitful (excuse the pun) as there were so many monkeys that we could see and some of the rare ones also came out on our guided tour.
The sanctuary is beautiful ad it is great to see how they look after these animals who have been abused or abandoned and then putting them in a safe place for them to live well.
It is a must for any animal lover!

I was really looking forward to visiting monkeyland, it’s been on our itinerary for two years and we certainly enjoyed it but I’m not sure I liked it as much as I thought I would. We made a bad choice of wearing shorts (top tip: wear long trousers!) and even though we used insect repellent, were bitten by mosquitoes a number of times. I also expected more varieties of monkey where in fact I think there are five I think. The guide was good and the monkeys cheeky so not sure why I didn’t enjoy it more? From Monkeyland we walked over to Birds of Eden which was fabulous, doing both in a day was perfect.
