- Discover378354487030 contributionsI loved this class, thank you Mai!I should preface this review by saying I am a horrible cook and have never even attempted to make sushi before. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by what I was able to make with my instructor's guidance! My family and I took our class with Mai and she was incredible! She started by walking us through what ingredients we would be getting and explained how to pick out the best ingredients. She used a binder full of helpful images and tips to convey all of this information to us which was super helpful! She very clearly explains how to cook each dish and is great at answering any questions you might have. We were able to quickly navigate the supermarket and get to cooking. The whole experience start to finish was very straight forward and tons of fun. This class helped me build my cooking confidence! If you're interested in learning skills for picking quality ingredients, learning to cook staple Japanese dishes, having a unique experience, or eating a delicious self-prepared meal, I would definitely recommend this class!Written 20 January 2025

Our visit to the Sumo stable was very interesting as we got to see how the sumo wrestlers begin their day - with a long, hard workout that pushes them to their physical and emotional limits. I had the advantage of being seated next to our guide, Yumiko, so I was able to get answers to all my questions (via text, as speaking is not permitted during the training session) and learn a lot about what I was seeing in real time. After the training session Yumiko took us to the Sumo Museum (located in the Sumo Arena) where we learned more about the history of the sport and saw photographs of the Sumo Champions and videos of several championship matches. It was a great experience which I would recommend to everyone. Thank you, Yumiko, for an excellent tour!

We booked this experience last minute for our last day in japan and I’m so glad that we did. Being able to watch the sumo wrestlers training was so interesting to see. Yumiko and Shogun were excellent tour guides who explained the history and rules of sumo wrestling. If you’re in japan I definitely recommend!

Magic Trip is a great company who delivered on their promise for a well-organized, punctual sumo morning. I was a big cautious about booking a tour through a company I wasn't familiar with but I have complete confidence in Magic Trip now. Their communication was great, and I got a reminder a few days before my tour. Directions were easy to follow to get to the meeting point, and it was a short walk to the sumo stable. Small group, too! I hate big tour groups. The nature of the sumo stable is that it only allows for a small group, so this was a nice intimate tour. Our guide Yusuke was very knowledgeable and a local- he lived right in the neighborhood! I booked this tour a few months in advance and was very pleased that it was exactly as promised, and for a decent price. They even took photos of the sumo and shared them with us within a day or two- that is always such a nice add on. Thank you Yusuke and Magic Trip! Sumo morning was one of my favorite experiences of Japan that no one on one of those big group tours seems to get to do!

This was an engrossing visit to a Sumo wrestling stable to watch at least a couple of hours of training. The trip was wonderfully conducted by Shin who answered all our questions afterwards and gave clear but polite instructions about how to conduct ourselves in the training stable. An unmissable highlight of our Japanese trip!

I’m relatively new to the world of sumo. My husband and I only started watching 3 years ago. But ever since the first basho we watched on TV, we were hooked. Since then we have watched every tournament online/TV, went to the January 2019 basho in Tokyo, have favorite rikishi that have won and lost, retired and rise up through the ranks. But watching a morning practice of these amazing athletes truly was an EXPERIENCE! With my limited knowledge of the rules and moves and holds and take downs, it was so interesting to see how rikishi develop their techniques and test out new ones. Some used “pusher/thruster”, some under/over grips, some used throat strikes and holds, etc. some were successful and some were not so successful. I hope to see some of these rikishi rise to the top ranks so I can watch them further their careers.
Yumiko is so passionate about sumo and she loves sharing it with visitors. Learning about anything new can be confusing but Yumiko explained so much and made it easier to understand. This is my second tour with Magical Trips and I have recommended it to my friends visiting Japan.
Thank you so much! Good luck to all the rikishi in the January 2020 basho!

This tour was beyond our expectations - very authentic and very well organized. As the tour guides said this is not a sightseeing tour - but a privileged invitation to be part of a very serious training session in a sumo stable. Our guides answered all questions and wrote us notes during the silent observation of the training. Both guides were very friendly and enthusiastic.

The guide appeared to be rushing through the introduction (possibly to reach the stable in time). Stable visit itself was good, but couldn't quite impress on the group that there was a museum tour after the stable visit. A considerable number of people left separately after the stable visit without informing the guide, and the group was reduced to 2 couples (mine and another couple) at the end. Guide couldn't quite explain certain questions on sumo ranking, attire at matches, etc, possibly due to language limitations (info is googleable so no problem); would've enjoyed it more if guide was more proficient and comprehensive in her presentations.

Seeing the sumos training in their stable was a real insight into a world we knew little about. Expect to spend 2+ hours on your knees (cushions provided) and in silence, but that’s just the price you pay for this privilege! Some hard copy info is circulated and our guide willingly responded in writing to our written questions, but it might be helpful to incorporate common questions into an FAQ document. Would love to see a real tournament!

This was an amazing experience that we never would have had if it weren't for Keina and Rina. We were allowed to sit up close during a morning Sumo practice, and even meet a few of the wrestlers before and after practice. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the power and performance of these great men is pretty amazing, and we gained insight and understanding into the inner workings of Sumo. Definitely a highlight to our trip.

I had a lovely morning walking to the sumo training and watching the incredible athleticism that took place. The tour was beyond my expectations I terms if learning and watching some of the sumo training, diet and day to day life as well as learning of the pathways to the elite pinnacle.
Thankyou, I truly cherished insight while on my travels in Japan.

We are a family of 4 traveling in Feb 2nd week....we r interested in watching the training sessions fr the wrestling....do we need to pre-book the tour? What would be the cost and what time does the tour begin n from where can we join in....
Written 4 February 2020
Hi there
Yes, you definitely need to pre-book as some of the days are sold out quickly. When we booked, it was $80 per person, but have a look at the tour groups website for the pricing.
The tour is around 2 hours. You meet at the JR Ryogoku station at 08:15, have a small intro and then walk for 7min to watch the wrestlers train. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Written 11 February 2020
I don't remember exactly how many hours the tour was but I do recommend setting the entire morning aside for this. I think we all split up around lunch time.

Written 25 March 2019
Hi thank you for reaching out. The thing is that there is a big Sumo tournament happening 12th to 26th May and most of Sumo stables don't do training for a while after the tournament finished. So we are so sorry to tell you that we cannot hold the tour on 27th, May.
