Yes, there is much to do in North Carolina, from checking out the exhibits at one of Charlotte's many museums to sunbathing on the beach in the Outer Banks (frequently shortened to the OBX). But did you ever consider adding the state to your radar for an intimate escape with your better half? From verdant wineries to waterfall hikes perfect for popping the question, it’s high time you do. Below are five of the best destinations for a romantic getaway in North Carolina.

Asheville

Asheville is beloved for its historic buildings, diverse dining scene, eclectic art galleries, and remarkable views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. First-timers will want to see The Biltmore, a national landmark that was formerly the estate of George Vanderbilt. It’s actually the largest home in the United States, with over 8,000 acres dotted with blooming gardens, a farm, stores, restaurants, horse-drawn carriage rides, a winery at Antler Hill Village, and a spacious four-star inn with a spa (couples massage, anyone?).

Other exciting attractions in Asheville include the Craggy Gardens, Asheville Pinball Museum, and The North Carolina Arboretum. After exploring Asheville’s top attractions, enjoy a craft beer flight with your partner at the New Belgium Brewing Company. Or, explore Biltmore Village, strolling in and out of the many boutiques, cafés, and art galleries. If you’re up for a 40-minute drive, check out nearby Maggie Valley, NC, where a stack of pancakes at Travelers’ Choice Award–winning Joey’s Pancake House is a must (just make sure you go early since they close at noon) and neighboring Waynesville, NC, where you can wander the walkable town center together, particularly winsome over the winter holidays.

Charlotte

One of North Carolina’s major metropolitan areas, Charlotte is home to a myriad of historic landmarks, shopping malls, museums, and sports stadiums. For beer-obsessed duos, this city is a particularly good choice with must-visit pit stops including Sugar Creek Brewing Company, Heist Brewery, and Wooden Robot Brewery.

Attractions you will not want to miss include the beautiful Freedom Park, Mint Museum Uptown, and SouthPark Mall. Sports fans might also want to check out the fascinating race car collection at the NASCAR Hall of Fame or catch a Charlotte Knights game at BB&T Ballpark. When it comes time to bed down, check into the Grand Bohemian Hotel Charlotte, Autograph Collection, or The Ivey's Hotel—both Travelers’ Choice Award winners are noted for their romantic vibes.

Highlands

Outdoorsy couples will adore chasing waterfalls in Highlands, a tiny town (pop. 1,088) surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest. Some must-see waterfall hikes include the 75-foot tall Dry Falls, Glen Falls, the hidden gem 120-foot tall Bridal Veil Falls, and the Cullasaja River Gorge.

When you and your significant other aren’t hiking, enjoy a special date night starting with dinner at Ristorante Paoletti or the Lakeside Restaurant, followed by dessert at Kilwins Highlands, which our community praises for its “high-quality candies and ice cream.” As one traveler put it, the “chocolate [is] to die for” and we think you’ll agree.

The area is filled with quaint and cozy inns and B&Bs, making for the perfect romantic overnight. Consider booking a room in one of the three on-site cabins at Half-Mile Farm by Old Edwards (many of which feature fireplaces) or a stay at the Skyline Lodge, a renovated former motor lodge that mixes retro design with modern amenities.

Wilmington

This coastal city is perfect for those who like to be on the water. Learn about the city’s history and ecosystem on Cape Fear River via an afternoon sailboat ride or by walking along the scenic Riverwalk. Either way, this 200-mile river is a sight to behold. Then, be sure to step aboard the Battleship North Carolina, a restored World War II battleship that now serves as a museum and memorial site. (If you want a more in-depth historical tour on land, check out Amanda Leese’s History and Architecture Walking Tour.)

Wilmington is also home to many great restaurants and bars perfect for a fun date night, such as Caprice Bistro, PinPoint Restaurant, and Front Street Brewery. If you’re thinking of proposing during your romantic stay, head to Airlie Gardens in the springtime for the Azalea Festival or during the Christmas season when the illuminated lights make for a stunning backdrop.

For accommodations, look to the Dreamers by DW B&B—its chic, colorful rooms could be pulled right out of an interior design magazine like Domino. Book the plant-filled Romantic Suite to round-out your getaway.

Talk about aesthetic goals, this place is truly magical! We stayed in the Romantic suite and it was even better in person than in the pictures. So many little details like an oil diffuser, custom made hand soap, a beautifully curated playlist, amazing lighting, the list goes on.

The Outer Banks

The Outer Banks are a strip of islands off the coast of North Carolina and an excellent destination for a romantic beach getaway. Two of the most popular OBX beaches are Currituck Beach in Corolla, where travelers can see wild horses and the historic Currituck Lighthouse, and Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head, home to two of the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast.

Water sports are among the most popular activities on the OBX, including surf school and sunset kayak adventures with your sweetheart on Cape Hatteras. It’s also perfect for group couples' trips since there are many multi-bedroom waterfront vacation rentals throughout the island.
