Large beautifully restored house with amazing views.
Tastefully restored and well equipped house and a great base to unwind and explore the eastern end of Crete. Lots of wonderful Tavernas to discover, however the one in Anatoli was slightly disappointing and the mini market was a disaster. The supermarket in Gra Lygia was thankfully excellent, but it would have been great to have better local options rather than have to drive, but a price worth paying for the house and views.

Dear Dave thank you so much for this great review. The local tavern is usually very much appreciated by our guests, but yes you can find a lot of more diverse taverns in the area and I am very glad that you discovered them. We are working on having a better Mini Market in the village. Thank you again and hope to welcome you again in our houses.

Lisa thank you so much for your excellent review of the house. It gives me courage and inspiration to go on with restoring these neglected houses and turn them into "jewels" of modern living. Hope to see you again sometime in the future. Ioanna

Terrific holidays.
We've spent brilliant week in Anatoli (4 adults 2 kids). It was unforgettable experience and we really were able to immerse ourselves in life of traditional Cretan village, make friends with people living here, see the island from a bit unusual perspective - not only as a pure tourists. Many personal thanks to Ioanna, every little thing in a house is made with attention to details and it gives it a lived-in look. The view from the terrace is terrific. The car, of cause, is obligatory. Have viewed photos from a trip once again - what a great vacation it was. Highly recommend.

Character and style with heaps of generous extras
We had such a marvellous time here. The house is so beautifully restored and superbly combines a sense of tradition and elegant homeliness with every modern convenience and then some more. We love the village and the lack of tourist crush. Make sure to hire a little car to navigate the narrow roads and download some offline google maps so that you can explore the amazing landscape. The website advice is accurate and comprehensive and the personal emails and recommendations from Ioanna were terrific. The Greeks love their food and so do we! Eating locally is an interesting and delicious experience. If you just indicate food and order some drinks, then the food just keeps coming! Baked vegetables, pork, tsatziki, okra, courgette, cucumber in salt that the guy at the next table arrived in with! The arrival of the watermelon seemed to indicate the meal was over! A most unusual but delightful experience! I think we were charged 16 euro for the lot! And so we learned to ask for specific things. The local taverna was delicious too and inexpensive. Homemade burgers were delicious. Our favourite hangout spot was Myrtos and the beaches beyond, Sidonis and Tertsa were also lovely. East of Ierapetra we had a fantastic meal at The River restaurant at Agia Fotia. And so back to the property. Perfect. I want to move in permanently. As suggested by Ioanna,we did get up to watch the sunrise one morning from the top terrace. Divine. Such a privilege. We hope to return again.

About the neighbourhood
The ANATOLI VILLAGE, folding down a slope behind the city of Ierapetra, is dating at least from Byzantine times, while recent excavations on a hill above the village might place it to archaic times. It has retained its medieval architectural character and its rich natural environment, while it is at close distance to some of the most beautiful, sandy, blue flag beaches of southeastern Crete. At 600m altitude it captures fantastic views to the sea while being surrounded by the olive groves, typical of the Cretan landscape, gigantic rock formations and natural spring waters. In the village there is a local family tavern with very good inexpensive food and a mini market, while in the neighboring villages there are several other taverns among which in AGIA PARASKEVI an excellent one. At 12 km the city of IERAPETRA offers all facilities and activities of a big city (shops, supermarkets, banks, doctors, water front esplanade with restaurants and cafes, archaeological Collection, organized beach etc),while the cosmopolitan city of AGIOS NICOLAOS (capital of the prefecture) is just at 20km Daily cultural excursions to archaeological sites, Byzantine and Venetian monuments, churches and chapels and natural places of outstanding beauty can be combined with swimming to these beautiful beaches, all supported by picturesque taverns. WHERE TO SWIM: Sandy beaches extend either to the northeast (the gulf of Mirabello), or to the southeast (Libyan Sea). At Kalo Chorio (ancient site “Istron”) are found two of the most famous beaches of Crete with azure waters, “VOULISMA” and “AGIOS PANTELEIMON”, while east of Ierapetra extend kilometers of sandy beaches and small sea gulfs, among which the best are AGIA GALINI (next is Kakkos Bay Hotel, laid out in another beautiful gulf and open to the public), AGIA FOTIA, PSAROPOULA (next to Kakkos Hotel, with an excellent fish tavern) KOUTSOUNARI etc. On the other west side of Ierapetra the village of MYRTOS take the mountainous road through the village of Malles to reach it a fantastic experience-offers also a beautiful, sandy beach. Beyond Myrtos extend isolated places to swim, up to KERATOCAMPOS. You should not miss a day trip to CHRISSI ISLAND (the Golden Sand beach), the most renowned beach island - a natural sanctuary. Natural environment of exceptional beauty, beach with sand and azure waters . Boat schedules from the port of Ierapetra. SIGHTSEEING:This part of Crete has some of the most renowned monuments you should not miss on your first visit, together with others, representatives of the rich island’ s history.. Archaeological sites is ZAKROS (the fourth palatine site of Minoan Crete) set in beautiful landscape with the seashore picturesque village of Nea Zakros, for swimming and eating. HELLENISTIC CITY OF LATO flourished during classical and Hellenistic periods, is located on the outskirts of Agios Nicolaos, where you can admire the model of planning of an archaic Greek city, also recognizable in Roman cities, and depicted, as prevailing idea in cities through ages (ex. Regency Street, London as an attractive city spine with monuments and economic activities). On the way to Lato, stop at the Byzantine Church of PANAGIA KERA considered a unique monument of its kind in Crete, all frescoed from 13th to 14th century, depicting the techniques towards renaissance, before the style was transferred to the West with the fall of Constantinople. ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES OF GOURNIA and MALLIA MONI TOPLOU, frescoed medieval monastery dating from the 14th century, and important castle stronghold during Venetian times. From there you can swim in VAI BAY one of the most famous shores of Crete, with fine sand and Palm trees, and visit ITANOS, the last eastern city of Minoan times, with ideal port location for exchanges with Anatolia and Egypt. The PSYCHRO or DIKTAION CAVE is an impressive cave and archaeological site, located at the Lassithi Plateau, near the village of Psychro. It contains a Minoan to Archaic period sanctuary of Zeus, who according to mythology was born there, before being taken to the Ideon Cave and nurtured by the goat Amaltheia. A 15 min stepped walkway or donkey ride will bring you to the entrance of the cave, while it is worth visiting some of the villages of the Plateau, like St. George, St. Constantine and also Psychro. MILATOS CAVE- a very interesting perplex cave, now a place of memory, where 3000 locals took refuge during Turkish occupation, to be executed after its seize. MATALA CAVES-very famous place, ideal for swimming SPINALOGA CASTLE ISLAND from Venetian times, now an open air museum . For nature lovers don't miss an excursion to the Gorges of SARAKINA (between the villages of Anatoli and Malles) and KRITSA, the forest of SELAKANO (west of Anatoli). In Anatoli 3 walking paths start from different points of the village-marked with signs and charts- leading to the fields of the locals, that used to cultivate till recently, and with miniature chapels for their protection and worship while working there. All walking paths pass through landscapes of natural beauty. ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUMS-COLLECTIONS OF AGIOS NICOLAOS (important) and IERAPETRA (a collection of sarcophagus only but worth visiting).

How to get there
Take the North Highway with direction towards Agios Nicolaos (60km). Just outside the city follow sign with right turn towards Ierapetra. At 10km km of highway you reach the village of Kalo Chorio or ( Istron archaeological site). At this point you either take the mountainous road to Anatoli (ROUTE I-shorter, to be taken by daylight) or continue to Ierapetra-Anatoli (ROUTE II) ROUTE I: At the entrance of the village there is a sign pointing towards Prina/Kalamafka/Malles, the villages before and after Anatoli. Take a right turn at the sign and continue through these villages. It is a very picturesque road, but narrow with bends, that it is advisable to be taken during day time, at least on the first time of your travel. At 12 km you arrive in Anatoli, at the highest part of the village. The first building to your left is Manolis tavern and down the street at the second junction there is a Mini Market and a sign pointing left towards SMARAGDA HOUSE. SMARAGDA AND PERSEPHONE HOUSES. You park on widening of the street and follow the walkway. At 20m it crosses with the Old Market Street. Turn right and there you will see Smaragda House to the left and Persephone House to the right. PASIPHAE HOUSE: Continue on the main street and after crossing the village you are in a little square with a statue. Take a left turn towards Ierapetra and after a loop you are at the bottom of the village. At the sign of Pasiphae House, you leave the main road, turning left and following a village road around a derelict building (the Old Oil refinery) you will arrive in 50m at the Old School. You park there and the second walkway to your left takes you to the house (10m). ROUTE II: You continue the main road towards Ierapetra (this is not any more a highway but a good, two lanes, road fairly straight). At 24km you reach Ierapetra. Take a right turn towards Gra Lygia/Myrtos. At the end of the ring road you are out of the city with the sea to your left. At 4km you see a supermarket at your left, and right after two blocks take a right turn at the sign pointing towards Anatoli (beware the sign is a little inside the road). You continue straight and in 12km you arrive in Anatoli, with the village hanging at your right. PASIPHAE HOUSE: Continuing on the main road till you reach the Old Refinery building to your right and a sign pointing towards Pasiphae House. Take a right turn and follow directions as above SMARAGDA AND PERSEPHONE HOUSES: You continue on the main road till you reach the little circle with a statue. Take a right turn and cross the village till the other end. At about 100m you reach a Mini Market and a sign pointing toward Smaragda House. Follow directions as above.
