Weather & When to Go

With its temperate climate, Galveston Island is a year-round destination.  Peak season is during the summer and the weather is typically very tropical in the summer..

If you want to visit Galveston and avoid the crowds, try visiting before June or after August. Once summer vacation is over the crowds tend to die down and you won’t have to fight for a spot on the beach. The weather will still be warm enough to lay out and the water stays warm enough for swimming. For people nearby looking for a fun day trip, you can visit anytime of year and find plenty to do as all attractions, museums and the Downtown Strand Seaport district is open year-round.

Galveston is also host to unique special events held throughout the year. Most festivals take place in the spring and fall including popular events such as, Mardi Gras Galveston, FeatherFest, The Grand Kids Festival, Historic Homes Tour, and the AIA Sandcastle Competition leading into the summer. In the Fall Galveston hosts the Shrimp Festival, Lofts Tour, ARToberFEST, Oktoberfest, the Lone Star Rally, Festival of Lights and Dickens on the Strand. Check www.galveston.com/calendarofevents for a full listing of all the events taking place on the Island.

Hurricane season is June to the end of November, so keep that in mind, but there is really nothing you can do to predict a hurricane until it is about to arrive. There is a good hurricane guide here: http://www.galveston.com/hurricaneguide/
