Newport is an active community and many visitors come with the outdoors in mind. The beaches and parks provide great recreational opportunities from spring through fall. However, winter is quite rainy, windy and cold so it's a good time to stay inside!

Many activity favorites revolve around the ocean. During season, engage in a fascinating adventure by taking a whale-watching cruise. Sport fishing is another highlight in Newport. Check out the following charter service and field guides for more information on these activities:

Many visitors enjoy crabbing off the docks on the bayfront or the South Beach pier, and you can get your catch cleaned and cooked.  http://www.portofnewport.com/

South Beach State Park is a great place to play outside, swim, hike, fish and enjoy the many walking trails. Surfing  - for experienced surfers only - is also an attraction around the Newport area; for details on the surfing conditions, visit  OregonSurf.com. The water is cold year round so be prepared with proper gear.

The tourist board's guide lists Lincoln county's many day use parks which are available for your enjoyment.  If you come to Newport during July you may get the chance to see the Lincoln County Fair & Rodeo.

South Beach Jetty has equestrian trails over the dunes to the beach, but bring your own horse as no rentals are available. There is plenty of free trailer parking, as well as portable toilets.
