The mountains of the Western Rockies can be extremely scenic, and despite what many would think the area around Bozeman has a full calendar of seasons. The summer temperatures tend to be on the mild side, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t get hot at times. While the average daytime temperature from June to August is in the upper 70s to the low 80s, there can be plenty of days well into the 90s! Summer heat waves aren’t uncommon, but they don’t tend to last too long. The high elevation does mean that things cool off considerably after the sun goes down, and even in August there will be nights with temperatures falling to the 40s.
The spring and fall can be on the cool side, and winter actually seems to last a bit longer near Bozeman. Both seasons can be a bit wetter than the summers, but the high plains lacks the lingering rains of other parts of the country.
Winter also arrives early, but can vary from very mild weather with low humidity, to intense snowstorms that blanket the area in snow. The downhill ski season doesn’t actually begin until the middle of December, but it lasts until the first weeks of April. January is usually the coldest month, and it isn’t uncommon to see the temperature fall to near zero after dark.
