Climate

Bloomington experiences four distinct seasons per year, including a hot summer and a cold winter. The hottest month is July, when average highs are in the mid-70s, and the average low is in the mid-60s. It is not unheard of, however, for temperatures to climb above one hundred degrees. In the winter months of December and January Bloomington becomes as cold as it gets. Average highs are in the upper 30s, and lows in the lower 20s. The wettest month is May, which receives about 5 inches of rain. The driest months are January and February, which receive between 2.5 and 3 inches of rain each. Spring and Fall are mild, and perfect times to enjoy the various outdoor activities in the area of Bloomington. Leaf watchers should rejoice in the fall, when the numerous trees put on a spectacular display.

School Year

Since the life of the town is synonymous with the life of Indiana University, the number of activities available in Bloomington vary depending on whether school is in session or not. During the school year, from September through May, nearly 40,000 Indiana University students call Bloomington home. During this time, there is a thriving nightlife and lots of things to do. During the summer break, however, many students leave town and Bloomington slows down a bit, but there is still much to see and do, including outdoor recreation, a vibrant downtown and a great variety of restaurants and bars.
