Being located in the Deep South, Stone Mountain has generally hot summers and enjoys short, mild winters. During the summer the average temperature in the area is in the 90's, with average winter temperatures in the 40's. The relative humidity in Stone Mountain is almost always high, sometimes getting up to almost 100% during the summer, making the area's hot temperatures feel even hotter. During the spring, Stone Mountain gets a fair amount of rainfall which causes the interesting phenomenon of temporary lakes on top of the granite mountain itself. These lakes fill will fresh-water shrimp, whose eggs lay dormant from the last rainy season, which provide an important link in the food chain for birds and other small animals. The shrimp die when the water dries up, leaving their eggs to continue the cycle the following year.
