After much concern was brought up regarding the condition of the area known as Olde Englewood in the late 1990s, the Sarasota County Board of Commissioners approved the creation of the CRA as a public agency to promote improvements and redevelopment in the area.

Englewood is an unincorporated community of approximately 32,000 people that is split between northwestern Charlotte County and southwestern Sarasota County . The Englewood Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) is a special district the Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners created in 1999 on the Sarasota side of Englewood . Both Sarasota and Charlotte counties have agreed to allow Charlotte County residents to use the Englewood Elementary School and the Sarasota County students to use the Middle and High School located in Charlotte County . The Englewood - Cape Haze area is situated in the South end of Sarasota County and the West end of Charlotte County on the Gulf of Mexico .
