The public transportation network in and around Mar del Plata is reasonably good, making most major areas accessible to tourists without private transportation.

There is an extensive bus system that offers many routes throughout the city, as well as to other neighboring areas.  Fares are very cheap, and taking buses is the least expensive way of getting around Argentina.  Normal running hours begin early in the morning and end late in the evening. The main bus station is located in the center of the city, and is the best option for obtaining detailed route and timetable information.  Another option for obtaining bus information is by looking in the “Actividades Recreativas” quarterly brochure.

There is no train system that operates within the city, but the El Marplatense Railway Company can be used to access areas outside of Mar del Plata.   For more information about getting to areas outside of town, check out this Land Transportation page.

Taxis are another option for getting around the area of Mar del Plata.   The best way to get taxi transportation is by calling for a ride (see the Taxi Company List ), going to an official taxi stand, or asking restaurants, bars, or hotels to arrange for a pick up.   Fares are determined by meters.
