Kandy is located in a high elevation and in the middle of Sri Lanka. The island itself has a tropical climate but Kandy being in the middle and at high altitude, does have a cooler temperature.

Kandy is not an all year round tourist destination as there is a monsoon season. The monsoon season happens from May through July as well as December and January. These months should be avoided as weather is rough and unstable. The island is in the northern hemisphere and therefore has its coldest month in January and the hottest in July.

The best time to come to the city is during an intermonsonsoonal period and the best time is from March through the middle of May. Light rains occur during this time but not enough to ruin a vacation. Humidity is quite strong here so plan on bringing light clothing and varying layers.

The area has seen tsunami trouble in the past, so be up to date on the area's weather before departing; you can check forecasts through BBC World.

A great time to plan your visit is in the month of April and come for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration.
