To get around Shenzhen, the traveler should picture the city following a West-East orientation between the neighborhoods of Nanshan and Yantian/Longgang.
Shenzhen is divided into six neighborhoods: four are part of the Special Economic Zone (Luohu, Futian, Nanshan and Yantian) and the remaing two are Baoan and Longgang. In these six districts, distributed among permanent and temporary residents, 5 millions people live. Shenzhen is a city in rapid development and many foreign businessmen arrive in the city to evaluate investing opportunities. This plus the constant migration of workers from other regions of China creates a mobility in the city that is reflected in the spectacular growth of the neighborhoods and the mobility of people among them.
This makes quite a difference to the small bordertown that existed before 1980 when Shenzhen was established as a Special Economic Zone. Over the 80's and until today the city has been a magnet for people and money that guarantees its continous development. Now, Shenzhen is a modern city with excellent utilities services, efficient transportation (it has an excellent subway system that takes you everywhere in town), good schools, comprehensive medical facilities that service its inhabitants.
