Split is located on the northern coast of the Mediterranean, in the middle of the eastern Adriatic, the area's warmest region.   The city has a fairly mild climate all year round.  Its temperatures remain mostly above the freezing mark during the winter, and during the summer never getting too hot.  The average high summer temperature in Split is in the low to mid 80's, while the winter highs average in the 40's.  The city gets a great deal of sun, even in the winter.  According to the Split Tourist Board, the city receives about 2700 hours of sunlight per year.

Most tourists visit the area during the warmer summer months in order to best enjoy Split's beaches and beautiful coast line.  But the city also receives many winter visitors due to its status as a industrial and educational center in Croatia.
