Roses furnishes the visitor with many great beaches and much fascinating history, but such allures should not preclude further travel to other nearby cities and nature escapes, especially since this city is surrounded by so many attractive destinations and shores.

Figueres, located a fifteen minute ride from Roses, is a center of trade that boasts cultural attractions like the Dali Museum, the Toys Museum, and L’Emporda Museum, not to mention historical religious and military sites and a vibrant town center.

The tidal marshes that are full of diverse and exotic birds make up the Aiguamolls de l’Emporda Natural Park, much of which lies outside Roses’ city limits, including the information office.  For more detail on this attraction, check here.

About five miles out from Roses is the Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria, as well as a medieval prison, and other numerous sites dating from the Middle Ages.

For additional trips through Christian time, check out the monastic buildings dedicated to Santa Maria in Vilabertran or the Dominican cloister and the Convent of Carmen in Peralada.

Finally, the most important and interesting excursion from Roses would certainly be a visit to the Catalonian capital of Barcelona.  Inhabited by more than six million people, a population twice that of Chicago, this seaside city sports some of the country’s best museums, most acclaimed religious landmarks, a very vibrant nightlife, and miles of gorgeous beaches.  About a hundred miles outside of Roses, a trip to Barcelona is definitely worthwhile.
