Bergen is largest city in the Western Fjords region, and the second largest in Norway. Once also the largest city in Norway (and the capital of Norway). During hanseatic times also a major commercial centre in Scandinavia. The Hansa time can still be felt in city in terms of cityscape, language, traditions and more.

The city is characterised by its location near the Atlantic, and by the fragmented and complex topography typical for this region.  Bergen sits on a penninsula and is surrounded by fjords and numerous islands. The city itself is located among (and on) numerous low but steep mountains.

Typical for Bergen is also the dense centre with its countless alleys and idiosyncratic plazas. Despite several fires, Bergen's iconic wooden architecture still characterises the centre.

CNN Go lists Bergen as one of the world's most underrated cities.
