The night life in Gothenburg is best found along the street called "Avenyn". The most famous club along the street is Nivå (now closed), they have several floors with different music. The visitors are mixed average guy and girl, 25+. You go here if you want to party and maybe to find someone. Excet (a similar place) located 100 meters up the street is also worth a try, the people might be slightly older then at Nivå.
Trädgårn have Gothenburg’s biggest dance floor with impressive lasers, they also have a BBQ bar outside in the park where it’s located. The average age is 25. You can stay here and dance until 0400, but avoid it in the winter.
Push is a fairly new club in Gothenburg, they want to attract the trendy people and does it well so far.
Nefertiti: If you want something else than mainstream pop and RNB, Nef is the place to be. They tend to play street, rock, and indie music. The best time to go here is in the summer.
If you are 35+ there is a place opposite Nivå named Glow. It's more of a bar with a small dance floor. Even thou the place is not for the youngest people they play new pop music and RNB.
A well know Irish music pub is the Dubliner, two floor filled with Irish spirit.
O'learys American sport bar offer you television in every corner so you don’t miss the game while you are eating and drinking.
A great way to start the night can be to visit Heaven23 a hotel bar located in Gothia towers. The people are mixed above 30, locals and hotel guests. Order a scrip sandwich and take a look at the beautiful view over Gothenburg.
All the places above are in walking distance from Aveny.
If you wish to avoid the hords of tourists found on Avenyn just walk a couple of streets down Vasagatan. The area known as Vasastan is filled with bars, pubs, restaurants (both cheap and expensive ones) and smaller clubs. Here you'll find gems like Skål, Cheers, Smaka, Inferno, Vasastan, NOBA, Pasta and many more.
Continue walking past the area Haga (or grab a cab) and you'll find yourself at Järntorget (The Iron Square) where's a bunch of bars and clubs such as Pustervik. Pustervik is a grand club that hosts different clubs on different nights, ranging from techno to reggae.
If you walk up the street Linnégatan (starts at Järntorget) you'll find even more bars and restaurants (though no clubs) which are popular with the locals.
Andra Långgatan also starts at Järntorget and you'll find a bunch of bars, pubs and sometimes clubs such as King's Head, Publik (younger crowd) and Rover (older crowd).
There's something for everyone, but don't stop at the meatmarket/tourist trap of Avenyn. Don't be affraid to ask for directions, Gothenburg is quite scattered so it can be quite hard to find your way around.
The site http://www.djungeltrumman.se can give you valuable info about what's happening for any given night (in Swedish though).
