There are several local travel offices in every resort on the island of Rhodes - Lindos, Faliraki, Ixia, Rhodes Town... who run excursions and they are usually cheaper than booking through the reps, you will save money and you will be giving your hard-earned cash to small local businesses, not mutinational tour operators. These local companies have been in business for years, they are reliable and you are picked up at your hotel or very close to your apartment/studio. Excursions for example are Rhodes by day and night, Symi Island, excursion to the south of the island (e.g.Prassonisi). You should always check that they are escorted trips so that you have information given and questions answered on your arrival at the destination (which can often save you time and money during your visit) Local buses are often packed at the height of the summer and you may have to stand also, should you be staying in the south of the island, they don't run late at night back from Rhodes for example. Taxi prices have rocketed, so excursions are a good alternative.
In addition to the excursion boats leaving from the main harbour of Mandraki in Rhodes Town, along the East Coast of the island there are many locally-departing boat trips available. Don't hesitate to try these out! They offer convenient and economic full, half-day and/or one-hour cruises to bays and coves in the near area as well as to other places of interest further along the coast..... From Faliraki Beach you can join a full or half day boat trip to Lindos and also to Symi Island, take a 25 minute boat ride directly into the heart of Rhodes Town (this service runs from 09:00 - 22:30 daily in the high season, except Sundays), join a mini-cruise for swimming and snorkelling in the fabulous bay of Anthony Quinn or even ride in a semi-submersible glass-bottomed boat to enjoy the depths of the Aegean. Similar trips are available from Kolymbia and Lindos and its surrounding resorts are well serviced by a fleet of glass-bottomed boats.
Given that patronising locally run businesses quite often cuts out the middle-man, excursion prices are more competative than those of your tour operator...do not be fobbed off by your rep that the service offered by, or insurance covering, the local guy is any less than that of the tour operator: Strict controls are exercised by the Greek National Travel Organisation and the Hellenic Harbour Authorities regularly conduct exhaustive health and safety checks on all passenger boats, small and large, operating in the Greek waters.
