The Havenmuseum offers an image of the harbour in the heart of Rotterdam. The harbour activities gradually moved to areas like the Botlek, Europoort and the Maasvlakte. These areas are as good as inaccessible for the public. But in the museum you can still have a taste of the typical sphere of the harbour in the old days.
The Havenmuseum is a "working" museum. As a result there's always something to see or experience. In the Leuvehaven many ships, derricks and a steam elevator are moored. The historical commercial vessels are often still in the original, ready-to-operate state and open to visitors. On the quay the hoist cranes are ready for the transhipment of goods and the boss of the slipways restores old boats on the wharf. In the workshops there are several presentations and demonstrations of old crafts.
Did you or your child ever visit a deck-house of an inland vessel, sailed with peat, bought sweets from the wife of the bumboat trader or have you ever been on a trip around the harbours of Rotterdam on an authentic steamtug? In the Havenmuseum all of this is possible. And if you have any questions, there are always volunteers around who will be delighted to disclose the secrets of the harbour to you. Transhipment, tonnage and winches, it's all clear to the dockers, but possibly doesn't ring a bell to you.
In the surrounding
In the vicinity of the Havenmuseum there is a lot to see and do as well. The museum is situated in the maritime heart of Rotterdam: Waterstad. Waterstad contains the eldest docklands of Rotterdam. Nowadays futuristical architecture goes hand in hand with the historical and maritime character of this area. Waterstad has something to offer to everyone. You can visit one of the interesting museums, stroll along the sailorspath, have a drink in one of the popular cafés or dine in one of the superb restaurants of Rotterdam.
