Climate
Sheffield enjoys a temperate maritime climate being quite warm in the summer and fairly cold in the winter - typically temperate. 24-hour average temperatures reach 60 degrees in the warmest months of July and August, and drops to about 40 degrees January through February. This doesn't mean it doesn't get hotter or colder than that, though. Temperatures are known to climb as high as the nineties in the summer and to drop below freezing in the winter. There is usually snow some time during the winter but several recent winters have been "green" and snow-free.
As in the rest of the British Isles, Sheffield's weather is notoriously unpredictable. There can be lovely warm spells of shirt-sleeve weather even in late autumn and summers can be mainly wet or mainly dry or somewhere in between. You just never know what you are going to get and this exciting uncertainty means that the weather is a perpetual conversation topic. If visiting the city, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surrounding countryside - especially to the west where you will find the world's oldest national park - The Peak District..
On and Off Season
Even though it is one of England's biggest cities, Sheffield is not especially touristy. Most visitors explore the area during the summer when it is advisable to book accommodation in advance. Since Sheffield is host to two large and popular universities, the majority of students leave during the summer, so some venues that cater for students may not be as lively when they are gone. The city has a lively club scene and was the home to the Republic night club which hosted "Gatecrasher" - a driving force in the club music scene for many years. The city has spawned some huge musical heroes - from Joe Cocker to Jarvis Cocker and from Def Leppard and The Human League to The Arctic Monkeys.
