Taxis
If you need a taxi to get somewhere from your hotel, you can either ask your hotel´s receptionist, who should have a cell phone or a radio to call the taxi center in the pueblo, or you can just stand out on the coastal highway and flag one down (this is often faster, especially in the high season, when there are more taxis around). To get a taxi in Tulum pueblo, either flag one down on the main avenue, or head straight to the taxi center, across the street from Don Cafeto near the beginning (north end) of the pueblo.
Rental cars
If you are planning on having an active vacation, consider renting a car at the Cancun airport so you can have the rental for your entire stay. This saves you, of course, the shuttle transportation to and from the airport, which can run about $190 USD roundtrip.
If you plan on taking it easy while in Tulum, you might consider renting a car in Tulum for just a day or two to make your longer day trips (Coba, Muyil, or cenotes if you are planning on seeing several) a little easier.
Do You Need Car Rental Insurance in Mexico?
In Mexico, it is required by law that liability insurance be included
in the rate of all car rentals. If a rental car company tries to tell
you otherwise, don't believe them. You may, however, still be
interested in comprehensive rental insurance. This additional coverage
will also cover you in the event that your belongings are stolen while
in the car. Be aware of the applicable deductible that comes with
comprehensive coverage before deciding if it will be beneficial to you.
Purchasing "Complete" LDW/CDW which simply eliminates the deductible from the partial LDW/CDW. adds dramatically to the price.
So If you opt to use your credit card rental insurance coverage
instead of LDW/CDW. ere are some important issues.
This
coverage is available on the
Visa Standard Credit,
Visa Rewards Credit,
and
Visa Premium Rewards cards. It is also available on
Visa
Signature card.
Here are the advantages and important rules.
1. There is no deductible and it is free! As compared to $70 to $100 /week and a large deductible.
2. You must completely pay for the rental with your rental card.
3. Take a printed copy of your coverage with you. You may never need it, but occasionally rental agents want
to see it

4. You must clearly refuse LDW or CDW on the rental agreement Purchase
of any LDW/CDW insurance eliminates all benefits from the program!!!
#4 is is tricky part!! Many car rental agencies mandatorily include
LDW/CDW in their rates. You cannot use your credit card free insurance
with these agencies. Avis is one that separates out
Liability from the Collision.
