Khajuraho overview

Situated in Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho oozes with passion, eroticism, dance and music and other finesses of creative arts depicted in sculpture and images of the temples. The name Khajuraho is derived from the Hindi word khajur meaning date palm. Khajuraho has the largest group - 85 original temples - of medieval temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Jain patriarchs. The temples are divided into three complexes- the western is the largest and best known, containing the magnificent Shaivite temple Kandariya Mahadev, a 31m high agglomeration of porches and turrets culminating in a spire. The Khajuraho group of monuments has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
