Founded by the Portuguese in 1575, the city has had a tumultuous history, finally achieving peace in 2002 after a long civil war. Now with a swelling population and surge of construction, the city is experiencing a rebirth. Take a break from the busy city and visit nearby Mussulo, a spit of land covered in coconut palms, bungalows and bars, and featuring wide sandy beaches and calm waters.
