Grace and Rizzo are great hosts and extremely helpful and friendly. The location on a hill provides a great view of the area. Saint Elena is about a 10 to 15 minute walk away (on very steep walkways) or a $2.00 cab drive. Breakfasts are tasty and vared.

This hotel was one of our favorites during our time in Costa Rica. The people running the place were SO SO nice, and extremely helpful. They helped us figure out what the best things to do in Monteverde were. Rooms were very clean and spacious and prices couldn't be beat.

Only downside is that this place was a little farther off the main section of town than would have been ideal. That said, it was only about a 15 minute walk or $2 cab ride to town.

Very enjoyable hotel!

El viandante is a excellent place to stay while in monte verde. It is about 2 kilo meters away from city center so you may have to hire a taxi ( $2 one way). It is owned and operated by couple Grace and Rizzo who make great efforts to make your stay comfortable. The rooms have nice wooden walls and wooden high ceilings. They make a nice breakfast. The breakfast room has awesome view and is a great place to see sunset. 

The room was beautiful (recently refurbished wood cabin-effect with ample bathroom space, TV, wifi, coffee/tea and heater), the owners were incredibly knowledgable and helpful (at one point Grace even ran down from where she was working upstairs to come and knock at our door and tell us that there were amazing views of a beautiful sunset from the restaurant if we wanted to come up and see it).
The breakfast was among the best we had in Costa Rica, changing daily but always delicious - one morning we were even treated to homemade cake along with the rest of it. There are fantastic views from the restaurant too, it's a very nice room to start the day in.
It isn't right in the centre of town but there are a couple of restaurants and a small shop nearby, and again, the owners are always there to offer directions and sort transport. About right for the $70 per night we paid.
