“Charming and Good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 March 2011

If you want the feel of a Bavarian ski lodge, this is a great little hotel. It is set up like cabins. We stayed at one way on top of the hill - nice because it was quiet and private. The downside was that we needed the hotel shuttle to drive us up with our luggage and it was actually quite windy and cool up there. At least 10 degrees colder up there than at the bottom of the hill. Fortunately, we are young and athletic. That hill was steep and would be a tough climb for an older person. There is a shuttle from 6am-10pm that will take you to and from you room and the lobby if you call for it from your room. It has several outdoor hot tubs and the campus is pretty large. Beautiful woodworking in the room. They have a water treatment facility on site and request that you do not flush toilet paper. There is no trash barrel, only recycling. They are very eco conscious and if you are familiar with the Costa Rican ecolodge ratings, they have received 3 leaves. The hotel staff is helpful enough and nice enough, Good location - within walking distance of 2 great breakfast places and an adorable little downtown. Less than 2 miles from the cloud forest, butterfly garden, women's coop, coffee plantation and sugar cane plantation. The internet was down our entire stay here. We did not take advantage of the restaurant as it was expensive and looked like nothing special. I would give Monteverde and Santa Elena a thumbs up, but this hotel neither impressed not offended me. You can stay in the area for about 1/3 of the price. In all of the places I've stayed in Costa Rica, I felt the safest and most welcomed in Santa Elena.

“Bad service, rude staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2011

After travelling around the world I can honestly say I have never experienced such a bad treatment as the staff at Heliconia Hotel gave us. They were rude, arogant and treated us as if we were a problem instead of guests. I see that I am not the only one who had been badly treated so I hope that the hotel manager reads these comments.

There was one exception and that was the driver Christian. He was very friendly and helpful.

If you are going to Monteverde, please choose another hotel!

“Ghastly experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2011

We were booked to stay here for 2 nights but fled after one night. The front desk staff were a rude shock - no smile - just very curt responses - they sure knew how to make us feel unwelcome! But their chilly reception was nothing compared to how miserably cold our room was - the bathroom was dirty with mold around the tub, there was no hot water, we tried to plug in our phone chargers and found dust covered outlets behind the beds - clearly the rooms were not very clean. The bathtub had clearly not been cleaned at all and we had to call urgent cleaning as none of us even felt like stepping into it. It was truly a disgusting place!
Monteverde itself is beautiful and has several wonderful restaurants. It is a real pity that our experience was overshadowed by this shabby excuse for a hotel - it does not deserve to be in business or to call itself a hotel.

“Clean but basic, in fine location though”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2010

This is in Monteverde, a few kilometers from the Monteverde reserve itself and thus a good spot. A few kilometers in the other direction are some fine restaurants (in Santa Elena, primarily). But the hotel itself was disappointment--basic rooms with no toiltries and a weak shower. (Beds were fine.) The breakfast (provided) was not up to what places in this price range usually provide although the coffee and toast were fine.
From the hype we had expected more of a natural setting, and the rooms were up a hill from the reception and restaurant--but there was nothing special about the hill. It mght as well have been a corridor.
Internet, available only in reception, was weak and/or intermittent. Computers were provided at least half weren't working. The hotel offered tours of the Monteverde Reserve, and to other nature sites, but we had a rental car and did much better driving there and getting our own guide. If we hadn't had a car it would have been nice to have the hotel transport, albeit pricey.
To summarize, there was nothing particularly wrong with the place but also nothing that would compel us to come back.

“Stay but don't eat here..”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2010

We stayed here for one night with 2 adults and 3 teenagers. We used the mastersuite, which was large, with 2 king size beds that could probably be occupied by 3 people. The building creaked quite a bit in the wind, but view is great.

When we arrived we were given a special "explanation" of the restaurant, which was basically a hard sell. We had lunch, but it was mediocre, and expensive. Ditto for breakfast.
