Honestly, my husband and I can tolerate a lot when it comes to room quality: dirt, mildew, hairs, no a/c, etc. But this hotel was too much to handle for even us. The rooms are literally bare bones: bed, blanket, shower and toilet paper. Only recently did they start adding refridgerators, but ours was dirty and unplugged, so we decided not to wait for it to get cold again. There was no a/c in the rooms, which can be difficult when it gets warm in Costa Rica. We checked for spiders and bugs each night, and had spiders on the second night we had to release before we went to sleep. Our next door neighbors had scorpions in their shower and had to have the management come and take care of them before they could finish their shower. This is not something I want to have to think about when I am on vacation! I leave my room to explore the creatures of the rainforest, but would like a barrier when I come back (and certainly for $60 a night!). Each morning we woke up with hundreds upon hundreds of dead bugs on the floor, which would apparently blow in after the evening storms through the cracks between the floor and the outside. They would be dead because they'd drown from the rain, which would seep onto our floor from the outside floorboards.
I felt very dirty and grungy staying here. Also, their showers back up after 5 minutes and then begin flooding the floor. There is only a 2 inch high tile that separates the shower floor from the bathroom floor, so if you are in the shower too long it will begin flooding the bathroom. I didn't even have enough time to shower and shave before it began flooding, and not to mention the lack of hot water.
With the plethora of options available in Monteverde, this hotel either needs to seriously, seriously upgrade their rooms, or close their doors for business. It's not worth the price they charge!
