“would not be my choice again”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Well we only stayed at this hotel for 2 nights on a Costa Rican tour, but it was definitely not my favourite. The hotel is awkwardly set on a mountain, with the reception being at road level and the rest of the 9 buildings up the mountain. They did supply shuttle buses, but it was awkward to call them just for ice, or for a pool towel, or anything. The rooms were very nice, the view, incredible (we stayed at the 8th level), but it was in the mountains and so cold, we had to get our jackets on and climb into bed to get warm. Also, absolutely no insulation or heat. I could hear the man in the room beside snoring so loud he might as well have been in my bed - did not sleep well at all, even though the beds were comfortable. I never even did inquire about the night walk or anything, because it was such a problem to talk to the front desk. And the lighting, which I know was kept very low to save power, made it impossible to read after daylight. I never even saw the pool, because nothing was easy to get to.

we spent two lovely nights in the top of monte verde
in some hours of the day you can see the cahuita golf.a very nice scenery
in the other time of the days you lost your wife in the cloud forest
it doesn"t mater how many guests are in the hotel.you feel like you are the only guests
they have a good and fancy restaurant
the staff are very helpful
i recomend this hotel to my friends

Room Tip: choose the rooms with the balcony that are facing the ocean

“Nature, Ecology and Luxury”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

My husband and I stayed at El Establo for two nights in January. From the time we checked in until we departed, we were treated with courtesy, kindness and professionalism.
Our room was spacious, with a stunning view of the valley, the bay and land beyond.
We were able to enjoy hiking activities, including a night walk through the forest with an excellent and charming guide.
The hotel made reservations for us to visit the Cloud Forest and provided information about numerous activities in the area.
The restaurant also provided an extensive menu.

Room Tip: Shuttle service is provided for all rooms. Some buildings are quite a distance from the lobby, but...

“5-Star Views, but....”

You probably won't find a hotel with better views of Monteverde. Amazing! It's also in walking distance to the best restaurant in town (Sofia's) and an ice cream shop. Not so amazing - super thin walls (newlyweds reconsider) where you can hear your neighbors talking in normal voices & the shuttle service that's a MUST (hotel buildings are on steep incline) isn't always reliable even during normal front desk hours between 6 am and 10 pm. My husband and I got tired of calling the front desk without any answer so we jogged down for breakfast. We consider ourselves relatively fit, but if you had any mobility issues, I would advise against doing so. Jack & Jill won't be the only two tumbling down the hill!

“Not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

The good. The view is fantastic, the shuttle service was fast and reliable and all the staff was very nice. Now the bad. You HAVE to take the shuttle, unless you are a billy goat. The lobby/reception is only open from 6am-10pm so if you have an issue your hooped. The rooms are very bare, not even a hook in the bathroom to hang a wet towel. Stains on the duvet. The "closet" was not a bar against a wall with 6 hangers. The walls are paper thin. Our room was on the second floor two doors down from the staircase and it sounded like everyone had to come through our room to get downstairs. At check in the front desk guy told us about the two restaurants on site, well look out because I tried to make a reservation at the smaller nicer resturant and they closed it on a Friday and Saturday night because there we not enough people staying in the hotel. Overall I would not stay here again or recommend it. Not a 4 star maybe a 3 at most.
