After a pretty nasty hostel experience in Fremantle, I approached YHA with a certain trepidation, but found myself pleasantly surprised. My boyfriend and I got a private room with a double bed on the third floor. The room was small and furnished simply, but it was clean and had an awesome view of the ocean so no complaints there. The bathroom amenities were clean (by hostel standards), however, I was a little surprised to find that there were only two shower stalls and toilets for the whole floor. In spite of this, I only ever had to wait to use the bathroom once, so I guess no complaints there either. It’s a five-ten minute walk to the beach, which is good, but there is no station within walking distance (boo) – however, busses run frequently to and from the city all night. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful, and people in general were respectful and considerate. So lots of good points.
HOWEVER, having said all, I would think twice about staying again for the following reasons:
1. No free towels – you have to pay a dollar for them at reception. I know it’s only a dollar, but what kind of hostel charges you for towels?
2. No free internet – UNFORGIVABLE! (I hate this kind of penny-pinching!) Internet is available, but it's EXPENSIVE.
3. It’s over-priced – we paid $80p/n for a basic room without an adjoining bathroom. For that kind of money, towels and internet should come free!
So, yes, YHA is a decent place to stay, but it's definitely over-priced for what you get. Check out other options first.
