“Thatched Cottage delight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2008

We stayed at Honey Pot Cottage for three nights in September 2008. On arrival at 4.00pm, our hosts Jan and Doug Wooldridge had a lovely tea ready of cake tea and biscuits after this refreshment we were shown to our lovely twin bedded en-suite room. There were tea/coffee making facilities also bottled water. The shower room was a bit small but clean with assorted toiletries and lots of hot water. The beds were very comfortable with nice clean fresh linen. T/V and a hair dryer also in situ. Throughout the cottage there are beamed ceilings(watch your head if your six foot or over). Breakfast was a feast with a choice of full english or continental. We started with a selection from six different cereals and yoghurts there was also a fresh fruit salad and plentiful toast with a choice of five marmalades and honey. all served on linen tablecloth with linen napkins. The dinning room was a cosy room with an inglenook fireplace.
Marshborough is within easy reach of the Channel Tunnel and ferries to the continent. The historic town of Sandwich is nearby with many nice restaurants. We enjoyed our stay at Honey Pot Cottage and will certainly look forward to a return visit, our hosts Jan and Doug are a credit to the B & B trade and certainly deserve their four star rating.

“Staying in a Thatched-Roof Cottage near Sandwich”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2006

I spent a week at the Honeypot Cottage B&B in the little hamlet of Marshborough a couple miles outside of the Cinque Port of Sandwich. The nearest village is Ash (3/4 mile) and if you know the proper little lane to cut through to the main road (Cherry Garden Lane) it is very convenient to Sandwich and also well connected with the roads to Deal, Canturbury and the Ramsgate/Broadstairs/Margate aggregation just up the coast.

I found Jan and Doug to be excellent hosts. Didn't try the full breakfast but my requested cold cereal, tea and toast with marmalade was provided at the arranged time and was of fine quality. I had the double-bed room with separate bath in the hall. The room was of typical English B&B size (small and a bit crowded) but the bath was quite roomy. It is on a moderately busy narrow two-lane road but the traffic decreases to almost nothing after about 8:00pm. The only disturbances are the chatter of the birds (mostly doves in late June) and the sun which starts lighting up before 4:00am in southern England this time of year. No fan in the room but I slept with the windows open each night and was extremely comfortable. The bed was firm enough (could have been firmer) and in good condition.

I have one caution and one complaint. The caution is for anyone six feet tall or over. You either get used to slightly ducking at a couple spots in the house or you bump your head. When this cottage was built several hundred years ago people were shorter. It has been modernized in every possible way (the power shower in particular works wonderfully) but there's no way to raise the ceilings or doorways. I'm six feet tall and after the first day didn't have any trouble. The complaint is that parking is very difficult. That seems to be the usual case at the B&B's I've seen but this is definitely one where you have to take your time and jockey back and forth to park your car without scraping into a fence post or hedge.

I highly recommend Honeypot Cottage. I enjoyed my week there while spectating at the Amateur Championship at the nearby Royal St. George's and Princes golf courses and would stay there again if I'm ever in the area. Price-wise it is a good value, too. Strictly no smoking (due to the thatched roof) which is a good thing in my book. You might want to call ahead for directions, if you know the proper route it's easy to get to but can be confusing if you're depending on a map.
