“We Loved The Quaintness Of the Henry Morgan”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Henry Morgan Resort from January 9th to the 23rd. I would like to preface my review by saying that we love the Caribbean and we LOVED everything about Roatan. In the past 5 years we have visited a dozen different islands and stayed at 2-5+ star all-inclusive’s. We felt that the Henry Morgan was a great value for the money spent.

Our flight with Sunwing was good, we didn’t think it was too bad getting through customs in Roatan and check-in at the hotel was normal for a small resort. The staff at this hotel was the friendliest we could have imagined. We felt welcomed there. They always smiled and said hello and often took the time to stop and chat. The hotel was beautiful and extremely well kept. The staff was always cleaning and making sure things were in order. We stayed in room 228 and had the pleasure of watching wild macaws land in the trees in a distance every morning. The hot water tap in the sink didn’t work and we didn’t care. We had the shower so we didn’t say anything. Our room was kept immaculately clean and little towel creations were put on our bed each day. Just something that brought a smile to our faces.

The restaurant and the food were fine. Everything was very fresh and quite a nice variety. Yes its cafeteria style and yes you wait in line, just like all other resorts with buffets. I didn’t see anyone starving. Thank you George and Andrea for the great service. Regarding the complaints about the small drinks and the 2 drink limit. If your main reason to go on vacation is to get your moneys worth in booze, then I feel sorry for you. You probably missed the enjoyment of one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. We ate and drank every day and had a fantastic and very relaxing holiday.

The beach and the water were the most perfect we have ever seen. The young man named Santos raked the beach constantly as well as always looking after the guest’s requests for chairs and cushions. Thank you Santos for working so hard. The sand was like white silk and you could walk into the crystal clear, calm water without any drop off. Yes there were sand flies so take bug spray and try not to walk on the beach at night. Like everyone says, if you turn left and walk 10 minutes down the beach the coral reef is right there. My husband and I snorkeled most days. We went out probably a quarter of a mile and it was just breathtaking. I am new at snorkeling and the water was so calm that it was a great place to learn. The water was probably 75 feet deep and so clear that we could see the bottom without any problem. We saw a huge variety of fish, stingray, starfish and a striped eel. Perfect, perfect, perfect.

In closing I would like to say thank you to everyone at The Henry Morgan Resort for a perfect vacation. If you’re looking for a low key and restful vacation I highly recommend this resort. We can’t wait to go back.

“Yes to Roatan no to Henry Morgan”

First let me start with saying I have travelled a lot and I have stayed at many all inclusive resorts. Some good some not so good so I have a lot to compare the Henry Morgan to. I don't consider myself to be overly fussy or hard to please.
On the plus side : the beach is wonderful. There's a young man there who is constantly raking the sand to keep the sand fleas at bay - more on those later.
The staff were extremely friendly and accomodating for the most part.
We stayed in one of the cabin type rooms whereas our other friends had much larger rooms. As we didn't go there to stay in our room we weren't overly concerned. Our room was clean, the shower had hot water and the a/c & TV worked.
The hotel area was reasonably clean.
On the negative: The food was terrible. 4 of us took the same item and none of us were certain whether it was pork, chicken, fish or just something else. They had roast pork one night that was so salty it was inedible. Most nights it was something deep fried and a mystery as to what it actually was. They did have roast chicken one night which was actually good surprising us all. They had one long line up for everything rather than putting the salad in one area and the main course in another to move the line quicker. And where was the ice cream? By the second week we'd had enough and were eating our dinners elsewhere. As we had paid for all inclusive we weren't overly thrilled by this.
At lunch they didn't have any sort of lunch meat or cheese like most buffets so again it was the usual deep fried whatever. I pretty much lived on bread, cucumbers and fruit.
I could live with this however a number of our group got quite sick. It's hard to say if it was the food, the food handling or what but when you lose almost a week of your holiday in your room with stomach cramps does it matter? We spoke to others on the beach who had the same symptoms so it wasn't just our group.
Although I didn't use the pool just looking at it was enough to keep me out. By our second week it was a murky mess. They seemed to lose control over their chemicals or whatever.
About 4:30 each night just when you wanted to sitm have a drink and watch the sun go down they would start fogging the resort with some sort of chemical. I'm not sure why they couldn't wait but they were like clock work on this. We'd move into the hotel however at the rear entrance it totally smelled like a septic field so not exactly where you'd like to sit.
Their all inclusive drinks were very limited in variety unlike Mexico and although all inclusive your bar fridge was not stocked. The beach bar actually ran out of beer one afternoon GASP :) FYI I had no part in that as I don't drink beer.
I had read numerous reports about the problem with sand fleas. Of our group of 20, only myself and another person were bothered by them. I religiously put on spray, took an antihistamine, pretty much everything I could think of but they still found me. I guess they just like me. I even tried their local cactus juice which really didn't help.
Because we had a large group, a week before we left I had requested our rooms be in the same area and was emailed back that we would be. Of course when we got there we were spread all over the place. They gave me a room and then gave my brother the same room. I went back to the front desk and asked to be placed in a room beside my sister. I was told there weren't any rooms in that section. I was a bit more insistent and I was given a room next to her. Turns out we were the only ones in that section for the week so I have no idea why they told me there weren't any rooms available. They certainly weren't the nicest rooms they had to offer.
This could be a really nice place and if you generally eat your dinners elsewhere then you would probably like it here.
Other things: We used the local water taxis and depended on Manuel and Elder to ferry us around. They were excellent and I would recommend them. Both spoke very good English and were accomodating and polite. They took us on snorkel trips for $10 per hour/person including gear if we didn't have it. Our hotel was way more and we could go where we wanted to go and when we wanted to go.
We used Carlos and Marcus from the beach to do an island tour. This was $15 per person and we had a great time.
We ate at Bite on the Beach, Fosters, Thirsty Turtle, Hole in the Wall and the Lighthouse and enjoyed our meals.
We found the people of Roatan to be very friendly. The water is so clean and clear so snorkel trips are great. A few in our group dove several times and really enjoyed it. If you want to be busy there is plenty to do. It's also great to just lie around on the beach and there were always lots of chairs at the beach and we always found a shady spot.
Hope this is helpful.

“Beautiful Beach, Substandard food/drink quality”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We are very disappointed in Henry Morgan Resort. We would definately not recommend this hotel, as there are better ones along the same beach. Henry Morgan needs to pay more attention by pleasing their customers with food and drink. Our group became violently ill while we were there. The food was very repetitious every day. You could only get wine at dinner and thats if they had a glass for you. We had to go outside the resort to receive a decent meal. We lost weight on our all inclusive vacation! At the bar you get a half of a beer poured into a small plastic cup, and they had limited drinks . You had to pay for premium drinks. Must say our stay at Henry Morgan was a let down! We took into account it is a third world country but after talking to many vacationers staying elsewhere we felt ripped off.
The maid service was great...room cleaned daily, and each day a different towel art .The beach was beautiful, and the snorkelling right there was amazing! We loved Roatan and will return but not to Henry Morgan. We spoke to many vacationers there and they also became ill , and were disappointed in the hotel. Many said Henry Morgan has gone down hill in the last year!
Advice.... you may want to think twice before you book!

“Just say NO to Henry Morgan”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I really mean it. Say No get your money back. The smell of septic will turn you off alone. Poor quaility of food and long cafeteria style line up. Out of the six of us five became very sick. I sent 36 hours in bed and our toilet never work right from the time we arrived. It broke just in the middle of my 36 hour Roatan butt (thats what the locals call it) and they gave us a key to another room to use untill they got it fix. Really not to pleasant when you have to run down the long wooden walk way and around the corner unlock the door and make it to the washroom before matters were out of my control. Not very fun and very embarrassing.

The public areas are very dark and gloomy looking, poor lighting at night take a big flash light. You can only get wine at dinner for free through out the day you have to pay for it or choose a drink that is on there list. The bar by the beach is like something you see at your local hockey area. Small wood plywood type setting and drinks are serve in plastic glasses at all bars. My husband couldn't get a whole beer. They open the bottle pour half in the plastic glass and save the other half for the next person. One of the people in our party had no hot water for two and half days and asked three times for it to be fix. Finally he bribe them with money to get it fix. Pretty sad I say. Air conditioner problems, toilet broken, sinks backed up. The big topper was the pool was GREEN. No one would swim in it. The funny thing about all of this is that we were booked to go to Media Luna and paid good money for a 4 1/2 star resort. We were told 48 hours before we left that they were having a generator problem. We were not the only people that were sent to Henry Morgan, looks like about 16 of us. We had a van rented and went over to see Media Luna and when asked if they had the generator problem fix no one understood as they said that the generator was fine. They over book and we got a 3 star holiday at a 4 1/2 star price.

I am not a over the top person and believe you get what you pay for. I didn't pay for coming home sick and not rested. If you are a senior becareful as there is no one to help you with your bags and there is alot of up and down stairs to pull your luggage around. Nothing for the children to do, no play area except the beach, not kid friendly as one other person put it is true. Lots of locals bugging you to buy there necklaces, earings and other things.

Some good things are the beach is what they say it is. You can walk a long way and there is different restaurants to eat at which are good. The best part was that we meant a man named Douglas Whitney he rents out jetski's, deep seafishing. Go see him at Island Adventures. He really looks after you and supplies everything to make your day perfect. Very reasonable price, speaks english as he is not from the island actually Upper New York area. He can be emailed at islandadventures.roatan for a fun filled day.

Again I will say I am not a person who is fussy by any means and do understand that this is a third world country but really the owner has to take responsibility for the poor value. We heard lots of people who were not happy with the food, experience and how poorly the management is. FYI, Patrick and Lucy are just there for there pay cheque. He lie to us and pretended like we were relocated because of the generator problem. Should of seen the look on Lucy's face when we showed up at Media Luna and found out that there was no generator problem. Wish I had capture that kodak moment.

Room Tip: There are no good rooms!!!

“Definetely not a Kid's friendly hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

My 2 kids (boy & girl) and I spent 2 sad days at this hotel back on July 2011, totally an ADULT friendly hotel not family at all, our first room was dirty, it seems like they never cleaned the bathrooms after the last customer, the floor was sandy, just dirty. "Of course I complained" they gave us another room but this time with A/C problems!!! Finally the mgr got involved and just simply said "I'm sorry" then my first night "what a nightmare" I didn't know that this hotel allows private parties in the rooms! right next door they where having a blast without thinking of the other guest, so just imagine what a nightmare!.. of course I called front desk after 3 times they finally came to stop them...in the meantime I wasted it a whole half a day and night trying to resolve my rooms problems. They had activities for the foreigners mainly "Adults Activities". It was mostly suited for "European's". The only good experience we had was the staff at the Buffet, extremely helpful and friendly. So, if you are an American or Local.... "Good Luck to you" but think twice before you stay here... Remember " Not a kid's / family friendly hotel unless you are from Europe... of course"

Room Tip: check your room before you check in, but anywhere there is so much noise regarless...
