Las Rocas is a resort and dive shop with a prominent little restaurant on the boardwalk at the east end of West Bay on Roatan. It is very casual and open air with seating also available right on the water. My wife and I love lobster so we had to try the lobster burritos and a Port Royale to wash them down. Delicious.

My fiance and I visited this past September and had a fantastic time. We are both experienced travellers and have stayed in everything from five star hotels in Singapore to Australian Hostels and between the two of us have been to over 30 different countries.

Everyone at Las Rocas was very nice and helpful - The bartender, the front desk girl and Angela, the dive instructor were great. We went there after a brief discussion of where we would like my fiance's first warm water dives to take place and we were both very happy with how things turned out.

The food was very good and the bartender had a great pour. The owner of the dive store was very accommodating. We took a great tour of the island with Alex (aka Big Daddy) whom I met when I had to go into town to the pharmacy to get some things. The following day he drove us up to the North Side of the island to go to the Hole In The Wall Bar and take a water taxi through the mangroves. This was all an additional fee to the $50 Big Daddy charged but it was well worth it.

The restaurant is good but a little limited. There is no real choice for breakfast. It's assorted fruits and muffins and one choice for hot food- whatever they are making that day. The sandwiches are good and the lobster burrito was excellant. The dinner specials were all very good too.

The hotel is no frills and there are limited amenities. Keep in mind it is an older place with third world issues. So the water smells a little like sulfur when it's first turned on and the pressure isn't great. If you're expecting the Ritz Carlton don't stay in West End or Bay, but if you want to have a good time and don't sweat the small stuff you'll like it.

Totally unrelated to the hotel... bring as strong a insect repellant as you can find. The sand fleas are brutal all over the island. The bartender recommended putting on baby oil at night to repel the mosquitos. We didn't get bit too bad and saw others a lot worse off than us so I think the baby oil trick probably worked.

Everything from making reservation, airport pick-up to check-out went very smooth and I am pleased with my overall experience at Las Rocas (Dec10-17.)

My only a few disappointment: the bathroom was outdated and could use some improvement(funny/uneven shower head), my value unit didn't come with a blow dryer (they offered to have me go into another unit to use one but I decided not to bother since I'm mostly diving anyway), my bed was very squeeky and I got some bug bites.

Now here're the GOOD things;
*Diving - Very professional/friendly staff, gorgeous reefs with healthy looking corals and tons of marine life (turtles, rays, lobsters, nassau groupers, eels, massive crabs, even a hammerhead shark on the other side one day.) Boat dock is conveniently located in front of the dive shop and most dive sites are very close - 15mins boat ride - so easy.

*Restaurant - again very professional/friendly staff, excellent service too! In the morning you can have breakfast buffet (fresh fruits, bread/pastries, yogurt, juice/coffee/tea) AND hot breakfast from the kitchen. After a few days Winston remembered I drink tea, not coffee, so he'd bring me a cup of tea without having to ask...very personalized service. One evening I ordered dessert and they were out, I told the waiter I was in a mood for sweets and he asked me what I would like, so I said "Tres Leche Cake would be great." That wasn't even on the menu but the waiter said "Let's see what we can do, maybe tomorrow." The next evening when I went in for dinner the waiter said "Guess what? We have a slice of Tres Leche Cake for you!" Oh my God I could NOT believe it. Above and beyond like royal treatment and we weren't at a fancy 5-star restaurant! Now that's island hospitality you won't experience everyday. Very impressive.

*Room - cute & cozy with A/C, mini stocked fridge, balcony with hammock. The towels looked breand-new.

*Value - can't beat!! Especially when you get a dive package. The rate also include airport transportation and daily breakfast.

This hotel is a total escape from the routines of the big cities, we had a great time with my wife and enjoyed it very much. The staff was always helpful and the room was always clean. We stayed for a week on a small cabin on the second floor. It had the basic stuff plus a mini bar and A/C, also our package included daily breakfast. It has a small restaurant with a great cook, the meals we had there were awesome. However this is no luxury hotel, if you want a quiet place to enjoy with your partner and are not looking for extreme luxuries this is your choice. From what I heard from the hotel staff the best time to go there is between February and August, they advised us to refrain to come on the "holy week" where everything gets hectic they say... because of the high volume of visitors during that week. We are really looking forward to going back some time soon.
