“Great winter location”

We went to PCV for two weeks from 25 January - our second visit. The first one was eight years ago when it was operated by Superclubs. Not many changes, apart from the bedroom furnishings being a bit tired, but hey, you don't spend much time in your room when on holiday! The gardens looked even better than last time we were there - an absolute paradise - the gardeners are constantly on duty and do a great job. The majority of the staff had been there when we were there in 2004 and as before they are the best thing at PCV - so friendly, happy and smiley. I include brief comments under various headings below:

Restaurants/bars
We dined very well in the main buffet restaurant by being selective and having freshly cooked food from one of the many cooking stations. There's always a good selection including pasta,fish/seafood etc Also a large selection of hot and cold prepared food. Several days they BBQ'd suckling pigs outside the restaurant, which were very good. At breakfast we had freshly cooked omelettes in this restaurant. We took lunch most days at El Conuco, the creole restaurant close to the beach, where they had a limited lunch menu of freshly cooked items. The one evening we went there, we weren't that impressed, having a tough steak and chewy lobster dish. Due to the Trip Advisor reports, we missed out on the Italian restaurant but did manage a third visit to the Kyoto Japanese restaurant, which is always very entertaining. We did go to the steak restaurant where you have to pay an extra 15 CUC. We probably wouldn't repeat this as they didn't have fillet steak on the menu, so we had T-bones. We got unlucky and got two really tough ones which we sent back. So my husband had rib eye which was better and I had lobster, which was much better than the lobster in El Conuco, but we didn't think it was worth the extra money. We had daytime drinks from the beach bar and envied the Canadians with their insulated mugs. It is difficult to cope with flimsy plastic glasses on the beach. Most of our evening drinks were from the main lobby bar, where service was always good, and they have waiter as well as bar service.

Entertainment
This is one area where we thought standards had gone down since the Superclubs days. There were a few professional shows, which were quite good, but some of the others weren't that great and there were quite a few days in our two weeks where there was no entertainment in the theatre. One night they had a string quartet in the lobby bar, which didn't really seem appropriate for the majority of guests. We are classical music fans but prefer something that's a bit more fun on holiday. A good young Cuban band played in the restaurant several times and also at beer corner, which was just near our balcony. There was also a terrific band from the Blau resort next door, who played on the beach on several afternoons.

Guests
PCV was full when we arrived, as usual with the majority being Canadian and very nice. However, there seemed to be more Quebecois this time and some of them were rather lacking in manners. They also left their plastic glasses and empty bottles all over the beach, even though there were plenty of garbage containers. I've always thought that the UK was the world leader for tattoos, however, I have never seen so many, on people of both sexes and all ages as there were at PCV this time! It was also nice to see that there were quite a few Cuban guests - presumably US residents who are now allowed to visit their home country.

Staff

Great as usual! Thanks to Dayami, Yailet and Ilaida in the main restaurant, who looked after us very well.

Electrical/other room issues
Plenty of power points in rooms, which as another reviewer has mentioned, take both US style and European two-pin plugs. Salon style fixed hairdryer worked very well - very powerful, but rather heavy. Didn't get round to using the iron but it was newish looking, but with a rather marked soleplate. Rather dated radio/CD player in room, which we didn't use as we had brought iPod and docking station. Very good safe which was big enough to take all our valuables, cameras, etc. Aircon worked well and was quiet on the low setting we used. Only slight problem was that we had an issue with what we think was bed bugs, but the management changed the mattress immediately when we told them. Also, bed linen could be changed more often. Was only changed after first five days and we had to ask for it to be changed the second time.

Would we go back?
Yes, but probably not for a while as there are lots of other places in the world we want to visit.

Room Tip: As many other people have said the upstairs corner rooms are the nicest, but as it was full when we...

“First time at PCV what a wonderful place and good times spent on holiday!”

This is a solid 4 star resort as far as Cuba standards are concerned. Everyone is friendly from the moment you arrive until the last minute when you leave. Rooms are nice and roomy, although I recommend a second floor room. All rooms a located centrally around the pool and not far away from the buffet or any of the a la carte restaurants which were all great - pleasant stroll to anywhere on the resort including the beach. It's not cruise ship caliber food, but it is good and lots of it, if your a snob don't go to Cuba and come back and complain about it and spoil it for the rest of us. You're in their country and this is very good food, it's just done a little differently just like any other country - isn't it why you travel is to experience something diffirent.

The people at this resort are amazing, they work so hard and are so cheerful all the time. Treat them like humans, smile and say hola and gracias you'll see what I mean, just like anyone you would meet back at home

Just to name a PCV employees worth mentioning, but of course too many to list them all:
Vivian & Niurka, Guest Services thanks for the special welcome, Liliana our wonderful maid who shared her great smile with us each day, Oresta, Raoul & Annie at the Snack Bar, Patricia, Ricardo & Wilson at the Lobby Bar - Great capaccino's & drinks!, Marlenis & Jesus at the Aqua Bar, thanks for the great service at the pool, Annimation Team, Yoander, Mylena & Mia, what great fun we had, you guys rock!, Pasta Station Lucie is amazing and what a memory - wow! I know I'm missing many others but it was great fun to help PCV employees celebrate 11th years in business. I miss you all already.

I would recommend that you bring water shoes as there are places on the shoreline that are rocky. The snorkelling is pretty good at the Blau end of the beach as well as the Playa Pasquero to the left of the beach. You might want to ensure you lie on a towel even on the chairs and bring insect repellant and afterbite just in case you get bitten by fleas, I didn't have any problems with fleas, but I had a towel on my chair, and the hubby didn't and get got a few bites. Didn't see any misquitos or bed bugs - and I checked!!!

Recommend the Paradise Island excursion - catamaran, snorkelling and lunch of some wild game on Fidel's private holiday island now opened to tourists. I heard the Dolphin excursion is good as well, but I did it last year when we went to Veradero, seen one dolphin you've seen them all.

Basically we just enjoyed practicing the art of doing nothing and came back completely rested and tanned. I would certainly go back with no hesitations whatsoever. Don't know what some folks are complaining about in other writeups - don't believe them.

Room Tip: I would recommend the 2nd floors as you can leave your patio door open during the day and at night t...

“Unbeatable”

When we arrived everyone was welcoming us and handing out drinks and asking if we needed any help. We, without long waiting got our keys. Forget about walking and looking everywhere for your room as in a golf cart one of the staff came; we got on and drove past aromatic flowers, astounding trees and lively houses. In the nick of time we got to our house it was painted fine orange in the company of green details. Stepping out of the cart we were just about to pick our bags but the pleasant man already took them and was unlocking our room door. We came in and were astonished by the spotlessness of the place the floor shimmering as new, the bed immense as a 2 double beds!
There was a balcony which you could step onto and be accompanied by the vivid and bright sun shimmering across the colossal pool; with people in it splashing around, playing volleyball, handball and water polo. What if the people in it got thirsty? Well there even is a water bar, which you can just swim to and have a delicious chilly cocktail, any flavour, any size and any type.
The food at the hotel was beyond description. Walking around, looking at all the appetizing food making your mouth water at the spectacle, all the food smelled luscious. There was something for everyone, from chicken, fish, prawns, gammon to salads, pizza, spaghetti and countless other meals. Nevertheless the desserts were supreme, chocolate cake, caramel fudge, cookies, ice-cream; in any flavour, along with immeasurable more amounts of desserts.
In the hotel there were also 3 remarkable different restaurants, Italian, Cuban and Japanese. All appetizing nevertheless I would without doubt recommend it as the most superb one.
Every daybreak we woke up, got dressed and dashed off to the hall. When we came all the tables were sparkling and prepared. Hastening we stood in line to get our mouth-watering pancakes; that if truth be told, are irresistible. I always put some glistening vanilla syrup on top. After that we always headed off to the beach which you only had to cross the bridge to get to, the bridge was surrounded by an open lake. Running around and having fun, everybody was either sunbathing on the sand, splashing in the water or enjoying the magnificence of the coral reef.

“Fantastic Family Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We had the pleasure of visiting the PCV from January 31-February 7 with my family of five (two adults and kids ages 16, 14, and 10 months). This was my family's first time in Cuba and they loved it.

Food - We're a family of foodies (okay, not our son) and everyone ate well on the trip. I went in with pretty low expectations, and I was glad to report that my expectations were FAR exceeded. It wasn't fancy stuff - lots of pizza, pasta, fajitas, stir fry, etc - but you could always find something tasty to eat at any time of the day.

I really appreciated that you could have the food cooked in front of you at 5 stations. It was a little irritating that it took so long to get to the front of the line (only because you could hear my impatient 10 month old fussing for food from across the buffet), but she has some allergies and the staff were so happy to clean out dishes and accommodate my requests for the baby (who incidentally ate more rice, peas, ham, broccoli, shrimp, chicken and fruit at each and every meal than she ever had). I was a big fan of the donuts at the buffet for breakfast and bananas flambe for desert. The cooking staff and servers were wonderful and attentive.

If you have younger kids, the buffet doesn't open until 6:30 pm and this was often challenging for us as the baby was both hungry and tired by this point in time. If you have a kid who will sleep outside of their room, then you can quickly feed them, get them to sleep, and return to the buffet for a more relaxing dinner.

We took to eating at the restaurant outside of the beach entrance for lunch because it was great to be served and to not wait for food at the buffet but also because there was lots of floor space so we could let the baby explore there. The calamari was delicious. You had a great view of the nature reserve from there and often the horse or some goats would meander down the path. That same path stretched from the PP to the BCV and was great for running.

We tried the steakhouse based upon trip advisor recommendations, but I'd say skip it for the 15 CUC per person. It was okay and the only thing really different was the steak and it was kind of ho hum. The japanese and the cuban restaurant were also a nice change from the buffet.

The beer garden was a big hit with us (sometimes corona, always becks and a few other beers) and the ice cream hut was a big hit with the kids (they may have eaten their respective weights in ice cream). We also regularly popped into the snack bar and the pizza there was delicious.

Beach and Pool - Snorkling off the beach was a trip highlight for my family. The kids were out there everyday for hours. Note that only adult size flippers were available and my son was disappointed until he realized that he could wear socks and they'd stay on. The kids snorkled up and down the entire length of the beach and wish they had brought the underwater camera to photograph the tropical fish, swordfish, sea urchins, baracuda, sea cucumber, etc that they saw.

The little baby pool near the big pool was great for the little one to cruise about in. We also saw other families take up residence around the pool by the kids club. I'm not sure if the kids club ran as I never did see staff with kids there.

I also really appreciated that this wasn't a resort of early risers who played the chair game. You could get a chair in the shade at either the beach or pool at anytime of the day (and the resort was at 100% capacity for part of our stay).

Rooms - As others said, the rooms are dated but we had no issue with our two rooms. The kids had a corner room on the second floor, it did smell a little musty, and the balcony was great. We had a room just next to theirs, but not adjoining. We had also asked for a crib in our room, but we didn't get one. They had put in a pull out bed for us which wouldn't have worked as the baby would have rolled off it. The king size bed was fantastic for co-sleeping, so that wasn't a problem for us. We saw fewer than 5 crib aged kids when we arrived, so I thought they didn't have cribs, until I saw a maintenance staff moving one mid-week. If you need one, they're there!

Fellow Guests - The first part of our trip, the resort was packed with sun seeking seniors and the vibe was incredibly laid back and relaxed. When the weekend switch over occurred, more families arrived along with more middle aged guests which made the vibe more fun, but still laid back. I wish there were fewer smokers (and the resort seemed to be overpopulated by what I would call the Americanized French Canadian) who threw their cigarettes all over the beach and seemed to loudly take up a lot of space. Some were really quite rude and started to make me cringe about the reputation they were making for us fellow Canadians.

Overall - This was probably the best vacation I've ever had. The resort had enough high points for everyone in our family, which balanced out the things that weren't so great (or rather, what other reviewers have pointed out that could be improved or are just the way things are in Cuba). It was a simple, laid back and fun holiday. And best part yet, it was great value for money.

When I had decide between booking the PCV and the PP next door, I was told to save the $200 per person and go to the PCV. It was an excellent choice (I think the size of the PP alone would have been too hard with the baby in tow).

We will definitely be going to Cuba again and would totally consider a repeat visit to the PCV. I'd go back right away to PCV, but my spouse likes to change it up each time we travel.

“Unexpected Service (but very much appreciated)”

Playa Costa Verde is a solid 4 star property by Cuban hotel standards and most visitors should enjoy their visit here. Thr property is easy to get around, well laid out and all the main buildings and sites are convenient. Rooms have all the standard amenities and are large, comfortable and quiet.

We stayed here for the third time with our best friends but unfortunately my buddy developed a bad case of bronchitis (which he picked up at home). That can be a real bummer when it happens on a vacation trip and the four of us toughed it out for a couple of days. His condition was worsening so I went to the Reception Desk and asked for medical assistance for him. The response was a pleasant surprise because this hotel had a great female doctor with an office in the Fitness Centre who was able to see my friend within 20 minutes. She checked him out, asked all the right questions, diagnosed his broncial infection and gave him 2 prescriptions from the pharmacy beside her office. The total cost for everything was about $74.00 and we thought that was rather terrific service. The infection persisted until well after we had returned to Canada but we appreciated the very high level of medical service that was available to us on vacation.
