“Well-placed for the Gallipoli battlefields, otherwise . . .”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

This is a nondescript beach + camping hotel, situated amongst olive groves in an isolated location on the Aegean coast of the Gallipoli peninsular. I am just back from a 5-night stay there, end-of-season, on a coach trip around the Gallipoli battlefields and war cemeteries. In that regard it's just about ideally placed: about mid-way between Anzac Beach and Suvla Bay to the north and Cape Helles to the south.
I cannot comment in detail on the beach or camping facilities as we made no use of those, but both seemed pretty basic. It must be possible to to do better in Turkey itself or elsewhere around the Med. in that regard.
As is common in Turkey, the paths, high kerbs and roadways were potential leg-breakers. The residence blocks were a bit 'down at heel' but everything seemed to work - plumbing, air-con, etc. The bar and restaurant were a little smarter. Everything was kept scrupulously clean. The food, served buffet/cafeteria style, was same-ish day to day and unexciting, but plentiful and wholesome. Breakfast queues around the inefficient toaster and the forever-failing cofee machine were the norm however. There are no other eateries/bars/shops whatsoever anywhere close, this really is the back of beyond.
Through no fault of the hotel itself, during our stay the potential peace and quiet were somewhat compromised by an uproarious party of year 7's from the International School in Istanbul. But presumably the kids wouldn't have been there if the school had any doubts as to hygiene, health and safety.
So far as I could determine, there was no internet connection available to guests. Mobile 'phones connected OK however.
In itself the Hotel Kum is 'OK' but 'no great shakes'. It earns its 4th star from me for its location. If the location's of no interest, it has nothing special to offer.

“Don't rely on staying here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

We arrived after following all their fancy new signs to find a very dowdy white buidling surrounded by caravans. When my husband went to enquire about a room a man came out and said they were closed! So we didn't stay here and just want to warn others not to depend on this hotel in the offseason! it was only November 2nd.

“Close to Gallipoli Peninsula”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

This was quite an ordinary hotel, but suited us for location. It really was out in the sticks and has not been maintained very well. It was ok for the one night we stayed there, as we wanted to have access to Gallipoli. Room was very basic. You can walk down to the beach (through the scrub) and see Gallipoli in the distance. The staff do not seem comfortable communicating with english speaking tourists.
I would stay elsewhere if there was a better option.

“A great find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2009

After having been told by a number of people that there was no-where to stay on the Gallipoli Peninsula we were extremely relieve to see the sign-posts for this hotel. We arrived at 6:30 at night and found the place almost empty - obviously end of season!! Still, there was a good buffet meal and the breakfast, though not impressive was more than adequate. - Turkish breakfast with a bit extra.
It must be really buzzy in the summer because it is vast - swimming pool, cafe, restaurant, camping ground and heaps of space. Staff were in abundance but I felt sorry for them as there seemed to be more staff than guests. Would recommend.
